Director Duncan Jones admits parenting sucks

Jan 13, 2019 15:35

I have 2 kids. 2 1/2 years & 9 months old respectively.
I’ll tell you something I never see anyone admit... they are exhausting, frustrating & life-destabilizing. They are rarely fun. Sure, smiles are great, hugs are lovely, but it’s HARD & not obviously a good choice in life.

... Maybe it's because I hang out in women centric spaces but I hear women talking about this ALL the time, especially since they go through so much emotionally and physically when they have kids and the majority of childcare gets dumped on them even when they go back to work.

Anyway I hope he and his wife can get some support. It seems tough, I definitely don't envy parents.

i see women post things like "no one ever talks about this" when it comes to how hard being a mother is constantly so it sounds like it depends on what circles you run in

I feel like not enough people talk about how it can change your marriage too. My husband and I don’t have the time for each other that we had before kids and that’s hard! I’m hoping it gets better when they get a little older and less demanding of our attention at all times.

I think his legal name is actually Duncan Jones and Zowie is a middle name.

If this was a woman who would've said this.

Right? That reminds me of how there's still magazines at the grocery store with lists of top 10 worst celebrity mothers amid the mix of things about Kate and Meghan hating each other. Misogyny is so overwhelmingly abundant in our media it's exhausting.

I saw that a few weeks ago and I can't believe those types of articles are still being printed.

His wife definitely posts too about how much having kids sucks (she’s also survived breast cancer iirc)

I was in a store and a man was there with his son. I don't know how old the son was, old enough to have coherent, well-formed thoughts, but far from being a teenager. Anyway, this man was having a conversation with his kid and was just clearly enjoying him and enjoying listening to him and it was really cool to see how much he liked his son.

sometimes i feel like parenting and childbirth have always been terrible but it's just a collective conspiracy to prevent people from admitting how miserable it is so we'll keep doing it

when i was a teenager i definitely wanted to be a mom but the older i get the less it appeals to me. my sister has 2 kids and i don't even feel the thrill of being an aunt that i'm apparently supposed to be feeling.

I'm with you on thinking it's this Great Big Conspiracy spanning millennia that no one is supposed to talk about how unsatisfying parenting is lest the population be screwed over for the future

Feel the same way. As I’ve gotten older I’m not so sure I want kids. My mom however thinks it’s selfish to not have children and thought it was ridiculous when I told her my friend really does not like being pregnant. Needless to say we had a nice little heated discussion.... but I can’t even with her sometimes.

Yeah I've never wanted kids but always assumed I'd be into being an aunt. My SIL had a kid and nothing. I can't get into it at all and I feel bad, but hopefully it will get better when she's older, idk
