This morning on my way out the door, I picked up a book off my shelf almost by chance. I was running late and wouldn't have time to grab the Red Eye, the Trib's free daily. What was in my hand was About This Life by Barry Lopez, author of Arctic Dreams, which is a desert island book ( Read more... )

UofC is taking out the roads in the middle of campus. So that opening scene of When Harry Met Sally soon won't be quite so reenactable...

ALSO. In further Bloomsday news... look at this MFGQ comic book adaptation of Ulysses. HOMG, that's gorgeous and I want to go through it. Is it 5 yet?

Happy Bloomsday! Oh man, I grew up in a household with four copies of Ulysses, all of them marked to hell and falling apart. It is an amazing book and I once read it in three days for my Fundies exam, and can testify that no one should ever do that, as it makes you absolutely nuts. (I wound up writing my essay on Ulysses in the style of the novel; ( Read more... )

I lied! Not entirely, but a little bit.

This is seriously the most interesting, insightful SPN S4 meta I've read yet. The things about Ruby and the Colt and Anna and Lucifer and just. Oh. Yes. (No spoilers for post-4.16 episodes.)

So, I have run out of jobs to do again, since they took me off the much-too-big-for-me-to-handle project. I've been doing little things all day that people are able to throw at me, but now everyone seems to be off at meetings, and I'm sitting here with one eight-page list of names and address to re-check my proofing ( Read more... )

Can somebody who is good at vidding please please please make a Lord of the Rings vid to Iggy Pop's "The Passenger," from the point of view of the Ring? It would be so appropriate in so many ways!

Whenever humanity seems condemned to heaviness, I think I should fly like Perseus into a different space. I don't mean escaping into dreams or into the irrational. I mean that I have to change my approach, look at the world with a different perspective, with a different logic and with fresh methods of cognition and verification. The images of ( Read more... )
