Wolverine Skull

I don't think I've posted these. I think they just made it onto Flickr, but I got busy moving and forgot to share. My bad. I'm still working on the Etsy update, but in the meantime, here, have some bones.

This is the skull of a good-sized adult male wolverine.

Things of beauty - just looking at the muscle attachment points and marks is enough to make me very thankful that I'm unlikely to encounter wolverines any time soon.

I think that the only way to tell the difference between a wolverine in a bad mood and one in a good mood is how fast it tries to chew your kneecaps off.

If the wolverine is in a good mood, it might give you all of fifteen seconds' head start.

My husband likes to tell the story of how, as a child, he shot a rabid wolverine twice with a 12 gauge shotgun, and it did not stop. He shot it the first time in the hindquarters, and then in the front left leg, and the goddamn thing kept coming. Since he was out of ammo, his uncle ended up putting two .357 rounds through the back of its skull.

Ah, the joys of growing up in the middle of nowhere, huh?

These pics really put that story in perspective for me. Its one thing to know they are vicious little beasts, but to see those teeth? Run away!

Yeah, they're horribly tough and horribly determined. A rabid wolverine is right up there with the worst things I can think of, nature-wise.

It is a shame you are not closer to me, in terms of geography. My husband is a genius at preparing moulds from objects and from that it could be quite feasible to create a metal skull.

He showed me one of his pieces of work once - a layered shelllike structure with many different layers. 6 years on I am STILL trying to figure out how he did it...
