Wolverine Skull

Aug 28, 2009 02:24

I don't think I've posted these. I think they just made it onto Flickr, but I got busy moving and forgot to share. My bad. I'm still working on the Etsy update, but in the meantime, here, have some bones.

This is the skull of a good-sized adult male wolverine.

What a gorgeous critter! Can you give me an idea of how big it is as compared to a ferret? That's the only mustelid I have direct experience with.

... her teeth are like needles, but I'm going to try to have a look at them to see if they're the same shape.

She'll have really delicate teeth. A ferret's teeth are really, really catlike. The fronts of the fisher skulls and mink skulls and so on are incredibly catlike. Which makes sense. That's basically the same prey items they're pursuing -- rodents and so on. Wolverines have these awful heavy crushing teeth that just make me wince to look at them.

I'd say a ferret skull would probably be really close to the same size as the mink skull, maybe a wee bit bigger.

An average ferret skull will be about the same size as the skull of the marten -- unless your ferrets are truly ginormous hobs. Wild mink skulls would also give an accurate comparison, but most of the mink skulls come from farmed animals, and will be somewhat bigger ( ... )

Those aren't teeth so much as horrible meat shears...

Wolverines may be small(er), but even bears, wolves and cougars are rarely willing to tangle with them, even over a carcass!

As always, thanks for sharing! I especially like the comparison of all of the skulls together - really shows what a brute wolverines are - the ginormo bassass brother of the family. And the fact that the teeth interlock like that on their own is just too cool to express with words.

I wasn't expecting the jaws to lock like that. I was a but alarmed by that.

We saw one in the UP in Michigan once. Darned thing ran out in front of the car--probably we were the only car to come along that road for an hour, too. I think it was deliberate. B said I'm glad we didn't hit it--it probably would have tried to chew the tire off.

And then it would have proceeded on to the axle.
