It was really, really nice to see Heath again. Even as the Joker. And what a performance. Jesus Christ, that was creepy. It was not him. Heath was gone. At no point, none, did he remind me of any of his characters, of himself, anything ( Read more... )

I am not generally a movie buff. I admit that before Dark Knight, I don't think I had seen any movie with Heath Ledger in it. I read your posts in January with but a vague curiosity about what I had missed. Now, I find myself wishing I had appreciated him as an actor earlier.

Heath Ledger's Joker haunted me enough that I went to re-watch the film the night before last. Perhaps I am simply prone to superlatives, but I left the theater thinking that his performance was perfect.

I'm getting the feeling that I'll be seeking out some of his other films...

I can recommend where to start if you tell me what kind of movies you generally like; I've seen almost all of his stuff, barring the more recent indie releases.

In between the two times I saw Dark Knight, I rented A Knight's Tale (I was inspired by your icons). I lost count of how many times I re-watched the movie over those five days... Funniest part was when I insisted my husband watch with me. By the end of the movie he was quoting from it almost as readily as he will from The Fifth Element. He later confessed to me that he had tried to watch the movie before, but hadn't gotten past the first scene with "We Will Rock You" playing in the background. (He abhors most sports.)

Regarding what kind of movies I like... that's tough. I enjoy old black and white Japanese films as surely as I enjoy playful romps like the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. I don't always take the time to watch horror films, though when I do I find them fun too. The darker side of me delights in such films as Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, and The Crow. Perhaps my affinity for the lead characters in those films is why I was so firmly and completely drawn to Heath Ledger's Joker ( ... )

Casanova was wonderful fun, and visually stunning. There's a scene early on where he looks more beautiful than I have ever seen him look before ( ... )

Johnny Depp as the Riddler would be really awesome, and might actually do something interesting with the character, for once.

I've read Killing Joke, and . . . yeah. That was the angle. Apparently that was one of the versions Heath read and re-read for the role.

Jim Carrey is the kind of Riddler I like. Depp, despite how good he is, would only turn it into the '60s campy silliness. Or maybe that's shades of Cap'n Jack.

I always thought Killing Joke should have been made into a film. Heath would have really shone in that particular story.

I've never seen cheek and teeth sucking to be so fearsome. Never mind the "make the pencil disappear" that intros the character. The only weak point in the movie was Bale, and even then... But i found his "Bat-voice" made me want to clear my throat in sympathy. A minor complaint, really.

Is it just me, or do you think Heath studied Tom Waits' stage persona for some of the Joker's mannerisms (tongue-smacking) and voice? Listen to "What's He Building In There?" for an example.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that he'd been a Waits fan at all. It's entirely possible.

Everything you said pretty much sums it up for me...except I will add that I would be watching it and suddenly remember that he was gone and I would cry, so I spent a good portion of the movie crying on and off. I was very glad I went to watch it alone and at a matinee, so I could cry in peace.
