It was really, really nice to see Heath again. Even as the Joker. And what a performance. Jesus Christ, that was creepy. It was not him. Heath was gone. At no point, none, did he remind me of any of his characters, of himself, anything ( Read more... )

In between the two times I saw Dark Knight, I rented A Knight's Tale (I was inspired by your icons). I lost count of how many times I re-watched the movie over those five days... Funniest part was when I insisted my husband watch with me. By the end of the movie he was quoting from it almost as readily as he will from The Fifth Element. He later confessed to me that he had tried to watch the movie before, but hadn't gotten past the first scene with "We Will Rock You" playing in the background. (He abhors most sports.)

Regarding what kind of movies I like... that's tough. I enjoy old black and white Japanese films as surely as I enjoy playful romps like the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. I don't always take the time to watch horror films, though when I do I find them fun too. The darker side of me delights in such films as Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, and The Crow. Perhaps my affinity for the lead characters in those films is why I was so firmly and completely drawn to Heath Ledger's Joker...

This is probably just a snapshot of what I might like, but I would appreciate your recommendations anyhow.

Casanova was wonderful fun, and visually stunning. There's a scene early on where he looks more beautiful than I have ever seen him look before.

Brothers Grimm is one of those roles where he becomes a different character. I liked that movie a lot despite apparently being in the minority.

Four Feathers was very serious, but it was a really good movie.

The Order got almost universally panned, but I thought that the basic idea was fascinating, and Heath's performance was very cool. I love the ending of this movie. Really really neat. That's one I may not be able to see again, though, because it's one of the movies in which he cries -- and I mean, totally breaks down sobbing.

10 Things I Hate About You is typical teen romantic comedy cut from Taming of the Shrew; the storyline not involving him is blah, but is worth it for his performance and some memorable lines.

Brokeback Mountain gets all the press, and I think it's a good movie with an amazing performance, and so it's worth seeing for that reason. It's not a pleasant movie, though, and Heath's character is very deliberately not very accessible or very likeable. But he vanishes into the part.

A Knight's Tale is one of my favorite movies. I know the whole thing back and forth, and movie quotes have become shorthand for complex concepts in this house. I'm glad you liked it!

A hearty thank you for the recommendations! First stop for me: the library catalog. Second stop: my local video store. :)
