Is exactly what it sets out to be - a powerful homage to Steven Spielberg's early kid films. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The last two Dr Who episodes show the effects of a severe budgetary diet. But although I found Night Terrors predictable and cliché, I found The Girl Who Waited deeply affecting. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a completely different beast to its ancestors. It takes the high concept and goes its own way. The story and characters are engaging, both human and otherwise. Andy Serkis risks being typecast; if not as a simian, at least as a CGI creation. He and John Lithgow are the stand-outs as far as acting is concerned.

Not a bad movie, a bit cliché, although the main players all did well in their roles. The eponymous creature was well realised until the final step, which was the only time I got a fake vibe from it.
It was less horrific that it could have been. It had less pathos than it might have. I felt it was going for more of the latter than the former. ( Read more... )
