It's been a bad month for my health.

A few weeks ago I was just lying happily on the carpet in the middle of the night, digesting My supper and feeling that all was well with the world, when I got a terrible, terrible belly-ache. I can't remember when anything so painful ever happened to Me before.

Once a year, in the late summer or early autumn, my Humans get into the car with Me and we journey away to a big place with lots and lots and lots of other humans who all seem to be having a marvellous time. footpad is coming home today. Usually he comes home at regular intervals: he's around for two days, then gone for five, then back for two, and so on. And he almost always arrives very late in the evening, but today's apparently an exception. akeela has remarked in the past that I know when Human Two is on his way back, but that's not so. The trouble with Humans is their completely unrealistic expectations of how dogs should behave.

Take footpad, for example. A while ago he showed me a photograph of two German Shepherds he'd seen in the main concourse of Zurich train station, and he explained how they weren't tied up or restrained; they had their leashes lying unfastened beside them. ( Read more... )

One of the strangest things about Humans is the way they can be manipulated into dispensing food. Once per day they just produce it apparently out of thin air, and sometimes food just appears on the floor. But, just once in a while, humans get into a funny mood -- and then, if you're canny and quick, you can coax food out of them by a series of ( Read more... )

While out in the woods with footpad, I found a badger hole and spent several delighted minutes with my nose in it. This right here is what life is all about.
