[So it's been a month that Hermione hasn't really come out of her room aside from school and eating. But it's been obvious that she's been preoccupied with something this entire time. However, when asked she's simply brushed it off as nothing. Or she's working on a spell. Or something similar. But she wouldn't give a straight answer and waved off

[And someone is dropping by...kinda. On his way past, Merlin stops and stares.

There's a feeling at the base of his neck. Like a tingling. Is there magic at work?]

[She's... not paying attention right now. Give her a minute or two. She's standing pretty still, focusing on the ball of fire she keeps conjuring between her hands. It looks like she's trying to get it to do something, but it's not doing more than rolling in a ball between her hands right now.]

Wow...that's--that's brilliant. [He finally lands on a huge, impressed grin and takes a few steps towards the scene.]

[She blinks in surprise and looks up.] Thank you. [And then looks smug, because praise is her weakness. That voice, though. It sounds familiar.] We've spoken on the journals before, haven't we?

[Well she was working with fire. Now she's leaping back a little and the fire goes out.] Are you all right?

Ah-! Oh dear, I'm terribly sorry! [ Laughs embarrassed and rubbing the back of his head as he straightens. ]

I'm quite all right, thank you! I'm sorry to have interrupted your magic.

That's all right. I wasn't doing anything very important. [Liar.]

Are you sure you're all right? I don't want you to have hurt yourself.

[cruxofapotter]

[Harry comes stumbling out of his room at the sound of her yelling. Something's obviously happened, and he's not sure what that means.]

What did you do, Hermione?

[loyalotter]

[She wheels around, feeling slightly guilty that she's making everyone antsy, but she's just so excited. This is probably on par with her excitement in second year when she woke up from being Petrified to find out her best friends had figured it all out. She'd been jumping up and down then, and she is practically doing so now.]

I figured out how to translate spells across different types of magic. I've managed to use wind magic as a primitive sort of Disarming Charm.

[Harry's just antsy by default. Whatever she's figured out, Harry knows he's about to be dragged into something he doesn't entirely understand. Right now, he's just blown away.]

Er... how did you do that?

[loyalotter]

[but she explains it every time! Or... er... tries to anyway... sometimes...]

That's what I've been doing all month up in my room. I just wondered if other magics could be changed, manipulated, using the laws of our own magic. So I've been working on how to change the casting of elemental magic so that it would resemble common spells, like the Disarming Charm or the Levitation Charm. I've got the first one figured out for wind and the second mostly works. Now I want to try it with other elements. It's just very different from our own style.

[She pauses for a breath and looks directly at him.] I think if we can really master this, it would be a good thing to teach other people. We could use it for protection, self-defense.

[Tonks is in the building right next door, and besides, once she's done moping about Remus being gone you know she won't be spending a lot of time alone in there. So here she is!]

What are you up to now, Hermione?

[loyalotter]

[Hermione glances up at the sound of that familiar voice and smiles.]

I think I've discovered a way to help everyone protect themselves. Care to come inside to see? I don't want to risk the wrong people seeing it before I can properly figure it out.

[auror_dora]

Oh, you know I have to see this. [That was not a question you even needed to ask, Hermione.]

[loyalotter]

[She grins and leads the way inside to the kitchen, quickly clearing a space where she can properly do this thing.]

Okay. I need you to hold your wand like you would if you were casting.

[And she places hers well out of the way so it's clear she's not even using hers right now.]

[Action] Because I'm exhausted and grumpy!Ron is totally canon, right?

[Ron was sleeping. Mostly. Because, y'know, not really talking to Hermione for a while and being stuck in a new place with no real way of getting home and all, it just sort of makes for lots of sleepless nights, leading to random naps whenever he could manage them. So when he hears Hermione's voice breaking through his sleep, he stumbles out of his room, disoriented and torn between being concerned and being irritated.]

Wha-... whazzit, what's going on?

[She wheels around to face him, looking bright and happy, kinda like she's just gotten full marks on her N.E.W.T.s or something.]

I figured something out, Ron! I think I may have discovered a way to translate a Disarming Charm to other magic!

[Action] Woo~

[Ron's just going to blink at Hermione here, caught between being blinded by her joy and trying to sort through his own confusion. Because honestly? He's not getting a word of what she just said.]

O... kay. That's, uh... that's good, I guess.

Yes! It means we can help other people protect themselves the way we do. It'll be better for everyone.

[She's going to peer at him for a second, though.]
