Part One | Part Two | Part Three | Part Four | Art & Music

Jared sighed and pushed the boom mike away from his face. He slouched down in his seat and rubbed a hand across his tired eyes. After double-checking the system to make sure the next few songs were properly queued up he let his head fall to the desk with a heavy thump.

Jared loved working at the campus radio station. He loved everything about music and working with it was a dream come true. Music had a way of getting under his skin and making him feel a variety of emotions. It could make him happy, sad, angry, nostalgic, etc. Right now, though, it was only making him exhausted. He had been running non stop since nine that morning. First was a full day of classes followed immediately by a double shift at the station and Jared was ready to collapse.

Unfortunately for him, there was still a lot left to do before he could pass out. Tomorrow promised to be just as busy. He had an exam in Calculus at ten thirty and even though he was feeling good about the material, he still wanted to get some more study time in before the night was over. And then there was his film project. He only had two weeks before it was due and he hadn't even sketched out his idea yet. Thanks to Kevin and his recent case of mono, Jared didn't even know when he'd find the time to complete it. He and Mike needed to find someone new to take over Kevin's shift. Jared wasn't sure how much longer he could handle it.

Jared glanced at the computer and noticed the last song was almost over. He pulled the mike back in place and readjusted his headphones. "And that was the latest by Gwen Stefani for Stephanie. Try saying that three times fast. Anyway, you know the drill, gotta pay our bills. Back in a few."

A soft tap at the window caught Jared's attention and he glanced up. He punched a couple of buttons and then waved his hand, welcoming the distraction with a wide smile. "Man, am I glad to see you!"

Mike laughed. "I bet," he said. He slumped into the chair opposite Jared and kicked his feet up on the desk. "How long you been at it?"

Jared sighed and stared at the computer, checking the e-requests and setting up the next set of songs. "I've been here since my last class got out at two, on the air since three. Man, I'm so tired that I decided to do an hour of requests to end my show."

"Well, good thing time's almost up," Mike pointed out.

"Thank god," Jared mumbled. "I could really use some food right now. It's been hours since I grabbed a sandwich at the Commissary."

"Wow, you've gone more than an hour without eating? No wonder you've gone crazy enough to play requests."

"Bite me," Jared glowered at his friend. His eating habits had long been a running joke around the station. Jared was rarely without food, no matter how crazy his schedule was for the day.

"I thought you were the hungry one," Mike shrugged.

Jared shoved Mike's feet off the desk and turned his attention to the music filtering through his headphones. Another boring Top 40 'hit.' It wasn't that Jared disliked the popular music, a lot of it was simply overplayed. Especially when he worked the "all request" hour. But the request hour was usually Kevin's gig. Jared's own show had a lot more variety. Or it would once he back to his normal schedule.

Mike leaned down and dug through the dirty backpack he had tossed to the floor. "Brought you a present."

"Please tell me it's Twinkies," Jared said, folding his hands in prayer and looking to the sky.

"Not quite," Mike chuckled, pushing a copy of the Greek Weekly towards him.

"Some gift," Jared muttered. "Why exactly do I want this?"

Mike smirked at him. "Check out page six." He leaned back in his chair with his hands behind his head, watching as Jared flipped to the right page.

Jared skimmed the paper as he turned the page. He was never really interested in the campus news because he was already well informed due to working at the station. There was an article on the upcoming Spring Fling, a 'Surviving Midterms' piece, and on page six-

Jared groaned and read the headline out loud. "The Top Ten Bachelors of South Texas University." Jared stopped and stared at Mike. "And this would interest me, why?"

"Keep reading," Mike instructed, nodding at the paper.

Jared rolled his eyes but did as he was told. "Number one. Alec Stephens. Popular senior who is as good in the classroom as he is on the field, Alec-"

"Skip it," Mike interrupted.

"Number two. Jar-" Jared stopped suddenly, staring at his name in bold print. "What the-"

Mike snagged the paper and took over the duty of reading out loud. "Jared Padalecki. The first sophomore to make the list since 1988, Jared is something of an enigma here on campus. He is witty, intelligent, and so friendly, he knows practically everyone on campus by their first name. Despite all of his winning qualities, there is no special someone in his life. When not in class, Jared spends most of his free time at WSTU acting both as co-manager and DJ of his own popular radio show. The ladies of Kappa Kappa Gamma have to admit that we aren't even sure which way he swings but either way, Jared is deserving of his place on this list. But the question remains, is there anyone willing to keep him from taking the number one spot next year? He's definitely a keeper so you better act now. May the best woman (or man) win."

Jared groaned as Mike snorted into his fist. "Kill me now." He dropped his head onto the desk once again, hoping to hide his face. This was an embarrassment of massive proportions. He was going to kill Sophia. There was no doubt in his mind that his friend had something to do with this.

Mike laughed at Jared's obvious discomfort. "Get up, Romeo," he said. "Time's up!"

Jared turned his attention to the screen. The final song was winding down. "And that's it for me tonight. We have to break for commercials but when we come back, be prepared for the wacky hijinks of Mad Mike Rosenbaum and his Eighties Inferno. Until tomorrow, I'm Jared Padalecki." Jared pulled the headphones off of his head and tossed them to his co-worker. "All yours, man."

"Wacky hijinks?" Mike asked with a smirk.

Jared punched his shoulder as they swapped places. "Dude, don't mess with me. I'm exhausted. It's been a long day. And I still need to study for my Calculus test."

"You know, Jenny aced that class. I'm sure-"

Jared waved his hand and shook his head. "I'm good man. Your roommate probably needs all the quiet time she can get after putting up with you."

"She? But Jenny is-"

"See ya, Mike!" Jared shouted over his shoulder as he left the studio, his mind already running over the functions he would need to know for the exam. He'd never met Mike's roommate but figured she had enough to deal with. How anyone could actually live with Mike was beyond him. Of course, he lived with Chad. Maybe he and the elusive Jenny had more in common than Calculus.

Poor Jenny.

Jensen stared at the stack of exams lying on the table in front of him and wished they would grade themselves. He just couldn't bring himself to focus on the neat little rows of letters and numbers scrawled across the pages. The exam had been short answer and multiple choice which was, under normal circumstances, fairly simple to grade. But Jensen's concentration was shot. It had already been a long week and it wasn't even over yet. Two more days. He could do it.

Music filled the room, a quick tumble of notes and words pouring from the sound system set up in the corner. The school station was always on in their apartment. Jensen supposed it came with the territory of rooming with one of the station's managers. But he had to admit that it wasn't the whole truth. No matter where he was or what he was doing, he was always tuned into WSTU during Jared's show.

The Mix was one of the most popular radio shows among the students of South Texas University. Each week had a different theme ranging from particular years to songs about colors. Jared often had an artist or song of the week that fit the theme. He also spent a lot of time talking to the listeners, discussing everything from stories about his childhood to upcoming cd releases to how much he missed his dogs back home. Jensen knew he wasn't the only one who listened to The Mix religiously. There was a reason Jared was so popular with his fellow students. He was just so damn likeable and his passion for music was infectious.

But Jensen had to admit that it wasn't the music that kept him tuning in. It was the voice.

Tonight Jared was taking a break from discussing the current week's theme "Northern Invasion" to talk about his Calculus test earlier that day. Jensen smiled to himself as Jared mentioned having a healthy fear of math instilled in him at a young age. He rolled his red pen between his thumb and finger as he listened to the slow Southern drawl, smooth as honey, the tone warm and inviting. The pen fell from his fingers with a dull thud. He knew he wasn't going to get any more work done that night. At least not for the next hour.

Jensen rested his head on his arms and closed his eyes. He let the sound of Jared's voice wash over him as Jared segued from college stress to a story about his brother.

"-my big brother, Jeff. So there was this old barn not far from our house that was supposedly haunted. The legend said that during the 1920's, the farmer was unable to care for his farm and his wife. She had one of those bells on a long chain that she rang to announce dinner. The farmer did not want his wife to die of starvation or worse so he did what he thought was best. When she went to ring the bell, he was waiting for her. He wrapped the long chain around her neck and she suffocated. Kids swore that on the anniversary of her death they would see her ghost and hear the bell ring, still wrapped around her pale neck. So there I was, eight years old, wanting to impress my big brother, y'know?"

Jensen smiled into his forearm. If Jared's brother was anything like Josh, this story could get interesting. Josh always had a knack for getting Jensen into a lot of trouble growing up.

Jared continued on with his story. "The dare was simple enough. All I had to do was go inside, climb this ladder, and bring back a horseshoe off the wall. I went inside and it was dark. I couldn't really see anything but I could make out the dark shadow of the ladder. And I could hear everything. Jeff and his friends were outside laughing and making bets on whether or not I'd end up crying. It was really windy outside and I didn't want to let down my brother so I climbed up the ladder. I started reciting my multiplication tables to keep my mind off the noises. But then a strong gust of wind rushed through the barn. I didn't know there was an old wind chime out back but all of the sudden, there was the sound of ringing bells. I screamed, thinking the farmer's wife was coming to get me, and fell off the ladder. Next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital with my mom screaming at Jeff for almost getting me killed. So now math always equals pain to me. But now for something less painful, how about some music?"

Jensen chuckled and grabbed the latest issue of Greek Weekly that Mike had left sitting around. He immediately flipped to page six and read the blurb about Jared again. He had read it so many times in the past 24 hours that he could recite it by heart.

Jared is something of an enigma...aren't even sure which way he swings...May the best woman (or man) win.

Jensen mulled over the words and realized their truth. For all he talked about his past and his present, Jared never mentioned anything about relationships on the show. Jensen couldn't help but wonder what Jared had been like in high school? Had he played any sports? Was he involved in any clubs? Did he have a serious relationship back then? If so, was it a cute cheerleader or an artsy girl from the drama club? Was it a girl at all? Jensen groaned and rubbed his thumb across the bold print of Jared's name. His fascination with the enigmatic sophomore was getting out of hand. Jensen wasn't sure what Jared's hold over him was but it was only growing stronger each day. Jensen felt like a young girl with a crush on a celebrity in a teen mag. Desperately wanting the unattainable.

A noise from the other room startled Jensen and he jumped as Mike shuffled out of his bedroom, stretching his arms above his head. "How's the show?" he asked, muffling a yawn behind a closed fist.

"Boy is rambling again," Jensen replied, tucking the newspaper under the stack of exams. He really didn't feel like having to explain himself at that moment.

Mike shrugged. "What else is new?"

Jensen spared a glance at his roommate before turning back to the papers in front of him, pretending to grade. "You find a new DJ yet?"

"Nah," Mike said. "We have a couple of interviews set up but not until tomorrow."

"Better find someone soon before your boy passes out from exhaustion." Jensen skimmed the next short answer and made the necessary corrections.

"What do you mean?"

Jensen looked up at Mike and nodded towards the stereo as Jared announced the next commercial break. "Listen to him. If his vowels get any longer, even the born and bred Texans won't be able to understand him anymore."

Mike gave him an odd look before flopping down on the worn couch. "Why Jenny, if I didn't know any better, I'd think you had a crush on the kid."

Jensen growled. "Whatever, man," he glared at the back of Mike's head. "Don't call me Jenny."

"Oh, speaking of crushes, Katie came by earlier," Mike announced casually, turning around to gauge Jensen's reaction.

The room's temperature seemed to drop a couple of notches at the mention of Jensen's ex-girlfriend. He kept his head down and closed his eyes at the onslaught of memories. Things between them hadn't ended well and even though it had been nearly four months since the blow-up, it still hurt. Jensen's throat felt tight. "What did she want?"

Jensen could feel Mike's eyes on him but he didn't look up. "She dropped off the ring," Mike finally said. "Are you ever going to tell me what happened between you two?"

"Nothing to tell," Jensen muttered. He glanced up and shot a pointed look at the clock on the wall. "Aren't you going to be late?"

Mike sighed and stood up, silently acknowledging Jensen's brush-off. "Yeah," he mumbled, allowing the subject to drop. "Oh hey, we're having a party on Saturday after the Spring Fling."

"Great," Jensen mumbled, rearranging the two stacks of papers on his desk. He wasn't really in the mood for one of Mikey's ragers. Hadn't been for awhile. It used to be that he was never happier than when he was surrounded by friends and loud music, his arm draped across Katie's shoulders, and a cold beer in his hand. But that was before. Not now.

Mike ignored Jensen's less-than-thrilled tone and leered at his roommate. "Jared'll be there," he said before heading into his room. "Maybe you can act on that crush of yours," he shouted over his shoulder.

"So he's gay?"

"What?" Mike asked, walking back into the room while tugging a t-shirt over his head. He sniffed the collar and shrugged to himself. "Oh. Not really sure. But everyone's a little gay for you, Jenny."

Jensen glared at his friend. "And the fact that I'm not gay?"

Mike waved his hand in the air. "Minor detail." He grabbed his backpack from the floor and moved toward the front door. "It's about time you two actually met anyway. He's just the person to pull you outta the funk you've been in."

"Fuck you," Jensen muttered. It wasn't his fault that he'd had a rough couple of months. Retreating into himself was just how he dealt with things.

"See ya," Mike hollered as he bounced out the door and into the hall. "Don't wait up, baby! I'll be home late!"

"Wouldn't dream of it!" Jensen shouted as the door slammed shut. As soon as Mike was gone, Jensen let his head fall onto the desk. He thought about the coming weekend, his stomach turning with a mixture of dread and excitement. He was finally going to meet Jared. He'd had so many missed opportunities before. Parties he'd ditched to spend more time with Katie, times when he got stuck working at the bar while everyone else went to the station events, times he chose to study over going to the movies, etc. But this time they'd both be there. He was determined to at least introduce himself. His friends all talked about Jared so much that he felt like he already knew him. Jensen wondered if Jared had heard about him as well.

The flutter in his stomach wasn't going away. Jensen pulled out the newspaper once again and flipped it open easily, the corner of page six bent to bookmark the list. Jensen reminded himself that he wasn't gay as he read the blurb about Jared once again. He skimmed it a second time and smiled.

Okay. So maybe he was a little gay for Jared Padalecki.

The campus was alive with activity. Students rushed from one class to the next, weaving between the red brick buildings. Jared smiled at the chaos and waved at a guy from his Chemistry class.

The quad was the hub of campus, the heart. It was the best place to hang out between classes. Stone paths zig-zagged through a maze of trees. Students sprawled across picnic tables and grass, some studying while others napped or chatted with friends.

Jared spun in a slow circle, holding his hands in front of his face, his thumbs and fingers forming a square. Inspiration had struck late the night before, much to his annoyance. But at least now he had a plan for his project. He was going to do a 'Day in the Life at STU,' music video-style. Nothing fancy but hopefully enough to pass the class.

Music poured through his headphones, adding the requisite soundtrack as Jared scoped out various locations. He wanted to have a good idea of the different shots he would use before finding the best song. The music was the most important part. The song would have to be perfect. He knew that most people would start with the song and then build on that, but he wasn't most people. He would know the song when he heard it. Everything else would then fall into place.

Jared glanced down at the iPod clipped to the pocket of his jeans. So far, the right song hadn't played. He did, however, have the first song to feature on tonight's show. It was Friday, the final day for this week's theme, 'Northern Invasion.' Jared had chosen Our Lady Peace as the artist of the week due to his long time love of the band. One more night to try to convert the few listeners who tuned in to give the band a shot.

A sudden tug on his earbuds had Jared twisting around, bringing him face-to-chest with a petite brunette. Sandy cocked an eyebrow at him, hands on her hips. "I've been trying to get your attention forever. Do you always have those things in?"

Jared blushed and ducked his head, expression sheepish. "Pretty much, yeah. Sorry."

Sandy rolled her eyes and smiled. "So, what are you up to? Aren't you supposed to be in class right now?"

Jared shrugged. "Nah, it was cancelled. Thought I'd get some plans together for my vid project. I'm on a pretty tight schedule."

"Ooh," Sandy said, eyes lighting up. "Can I help?"

"You want to help?" Jared repeated. "You don't even know what it is yet."

"Doesn't matter," Sandy replied, bouncing on her heels. "I loved that class. What did you decide on?"

Jared smiled at his friend, her enthusiasm catching. He explained his idea, pointing out the possible locations as he talked. Sandy nodded her head in agreement. Jared grinned, pleased that she seemed to like his idea. When he finished, Sandy turned her head up to look at him. "Do you have a song picked out?"

"Not yet," Jared admitted.

Sandy laughed. "I should've known."

"Hey!" Jared tried to act offended but knew he failed. His friends knew him too well.

"Most people start with the song when doing a music video," Sandy pointed out.

Jared scratched the back of his neck as she echoed his earlier thoughts. "I know."

The brunette laughed and placed a warm hand on his arm. "I'm glad you're not like most people." She squeezed his arm and let her fingers trace a path down his bicep before dropping her hand to her side.

"So I'm going to try to get most of the filming done on Monday," Jared told his friend, mentally running through his schedule. "I have a report due in Psychology but I'm free after I turn it in. What's your schedule look like?"

Sandy bit her lip and glanced over at a couple making out nearby. "Um, I get out of class at eleven and then I'm done for the day."

"Great, you wanna meet me here at 11:30? We can grab something to eat and then try to get all the filming done before I have to be at the station."

"Perfect," Sandy replied. Jared noticed her wistful expression as she watched the couple, the guy nuzzling the girl's neck, the two of them wrapped in their own private cocoon, tucked away from the world. She sucked in a deep breath and turned back to face him. "Speaking of lunch, have you eaten yet?"

Jared's stomach growled at the mention of food and Sandy laughed. She stifled her giggles as Jared blushed, his cheeks a furious red.

"I'll take that as a no," Sandy chuckled. She cocked her head in the direction of the Commissary. "Care to join me? My treat."

"Really?" Jared raised an eyebrow at her offer. He didn't think twice as he began walking toward the building, knowing that Sandy wouldn't be far behind.

"Yes really," she answered, bouncing along the path next to him, taking two steps for every one of his. "Besides, she continued, casting a sideways glance at him, "this way I can say I had a lunch date with one of school's most eligible bachelors."

Jared groaned at the reminder. "And you're even paying? How progressive of you." He wondered how long it would be before all of the extra attention he'd received since the list was published would die down. He was beginning to feel like an animal at the zoo. "Tell Soph thanks for that, by the way."

Sandy smiled at his sarcasm. "Hey, she just put in the suggestion. The charm that put you on the list is all you, baby."

Jared flushed as they reached the door. He held it open, motioning Sandy through. "It's just weird," he finally muttered, unable to look her in the eyes. He just didn't get it. Why him? What made him so special?

Jared shook off his unease as Sandy passed. With a wicked grin, he reached down and smacked her ass. He laughed and took off, her squeal chasing him along the way. He slowed down and waited for her to catch up, one question echoing through his mind.

Why him?

"-fifty versions of 'What I Did Over Spring Break.' I'm telling you man, some of the kids these days-" Tom trailed off as he took a bite from his sandwich.

"Some of the kids these days?" Jensen tossed a disbelieving smirk in his friend's direction. "You do realize you're not an old man, right? That you're barely older than they are?"

Tom blushed, his cheeks a rosy red. "I just mean they only seem to think about sex. Remind me next time to make a rule that descriptive does not mean pornographic."

"Learning anything?" Jensen asked, swallowing a bite of his pizza and reaching for his drink.

"Yeah," Tom muttered. "Don't assign a five page essay right after....oh. God, Jensen, you're a jackass."

Jensen held his hands up. "Hey man, I was just curious if you found anything good. I heard you could use the pointers."

"My sex life is just fine, thank you very fucking much," Tom muttered. He looked up at Jensen through narrowed eyes. "At least I have a sex life."

Jensen glared at him. "Low blow, man."

Tom looked guilty, dropping his gaze to the table. "Sorry man, I know-"

He was cut off by a loud squeal from across the room. "Put me down right now, Jared Padalecki!"

Tom and Jensen both turned to see the tall sophomore make his entrance with a brunette slung over his shoulder. Jensen watched in amusement as she attempted to kick her legs while Jared just laughed, smile wide and bright.

Jared made his way across the food court, stopping by several tables to greet the occupants. Jensen envied the other man's confidence as he walked, holding onto the brunette with a casual ease. Jared seemed to know everyone. He slapped hands with the guys from the football team and flirted with a table of freshman girls. His dimples flashed and the girls all giggled. Jared finally turned around and set his hostage down on her feet.

Jensen laughed as the girl smacked her hand against Jared's broad chest. He could tell she was trying not to smile but even from a distance, Jensen could see that she was failing miserably. Jared leaned down and whispered something into her ear and she blushed. The brunette wrapped her hand around Jared's wrist and tugged him forward. Jensen watched them move towards the food, wondering who she was.

Jensen turned back to Tom who was watching him with a weird look in his eyes. He tossed a glance back over his shoulder and nodded in Jared's direction. "Friendly guy."

"Jared?" Tom asked, as if he needed the clarification despite the noisy entrance. "Yeah, he's a good kid. Real nice guy."

Jensen noticed the casual way Tom mentioned the sophomore. "Wait...you know him?"

"Sure," Tom shrugged. "Doesn't everyone? He and I talk quite a bit down at the station. Mike keeps me waiting often enough and Jared's almost always there. So we talk. Did you know he turned down a couple of Ivy League schools to go here because he didn't want to leave Texas? And that he's actually here on a full ride?"

Jensen shook his head and turned his attention back to his food. He soaked up the new information like a sponge. He felt a little ridiculous when it came to his interest in the sophomore but there was no sense in denying it. Jared had him intrigued. Every time he learned something new about the kid, the more interesting he became.

"You going to the Spring Fling tomorrow?" Tom asked around a mouthful of food.

Jensen shrugged. "Probably. Not much else to do."

The Spring Fling was an annual carnival held on campus after Spring Break, a way of saying 'Just because school is back in session doesn't mean the fun has to end.' Jensen felt that the event was always a little cheesy but he usually had a good time.

"Is Chris playing again this year?"

Jensen's best friend Chris fronted a small local band. They weren't huge but they had a loyal following. Kane had a regular gig at Jake's, a small tavern on the west end of town, not far from Jensen's apartment. Every year, though, Kane played the main stage at the Spring Fling. Five years strong.

"Of course," Jensen nodded and took a drink of his soda. "You know Chris can't pass up a chance to scam on young co-eds."

Tom snickered. "True."

Jensen turned his attention back to his food as Tom did the same. He liked spending time with Tom. The other man was perfectly capable of relaxing and being quiet without things feeling awkward. Too many of their friends felt the need to constantly fill the silence with their incessant chatter. Jensen had first met Tom when they had been paired together as roommates during their freshman year. They'd been friends ever since.

Jensen was nearly done with his meal when he heard a loud bark of laughter behind him. Tossing a glance over his shoulder, he saw Jared tug the brunette down into the chair next to him a few tables away. She swatted at him but smiled as Jared unloaded a plate of food from his tray and placed it in front of her. He grabbed a fry from her plate and laughed as she glared at him, a pout on her pretty mouth.

Jensen noticed how Jared turned his body toward her, leaning in and focused solely on their conversation. He couldn't make out what was being said but he'd recognize Jared's deep voice anywhere. Jared laughed again, tossing his head back. Jensen was mesmerized by the long expanse of neck and flash of dimples. Tom cleared his throat and Jensen was reminded that he wasn't alone. He turned back to his friend, his face flushed with embarrassment.

Tom wore the same expression as earlier, curiosity with a hint of something else Jensen couldn't name. "You want me to introduce you?"

"What?" Jensen grumbled, dropping his gaze to a spot just over Tom's shoulder. "No. I just-" He grew quiet. He just what? Jensen wasn't sure himself.

"Anyway, I have to go," Tom announced, pushing back from the table and standing up. "Class in twenty. So I'll see you at the Fling?"

Jensen just nodded. He watched as Tom walked off. His friend stopped by Jared's table and Jensen stared at the empty chair across from him, not wanting Tom to catch him staring again. Jensen could hear the low murmur of greetings, the slap of hands. He waited another minute before risking another glance at the sophomore's table. Jared was still talking to Tom, gesturing wildly and turning to draw the brunette at his side into the conversation. Jensen watched as she rested her hand on Jared's arm, watched as Jared grinned at her, words flying rapid fire from his mouth. The girl smiled and grabbed a fry from her plate, shoving it into Jared's mouth, causing him to sputter and Tom to laugh out loud. Jared's glare was ruined by his wide smile.

Tom turned and caught Jensen watching once again. He raised an eyebrow and tilted his head in Jared's direction, the invitation clear. Jensen sighed and shook his head. He gathered up his tray and picked his backpack up off the floor, heading in the opposite direction his friend had taken. Jensen couldn't identify the heavy feeling that had settled low in his chest but he knew he had to get away from the cafeteria. He heard Jared laugh again but refused to turn around this time. His fascination with the sophomore was beyond ridiculous.

Jensen shook his head at his own thoughts. When exactly had he become a thirteen year old girl?

"So what brings you to this year's Spring Fling?"

"You, because you're fucking hot."

Jared heaved a heavy sigh and let the hand holding the microphone drop to his side. He rubbed his other hand across his weary eyes, digging his thumb into his temple. "Erica, you can't say fucking on the air. Thank god this isn't live."

"Ok, ok," Erica smiled. "Then let's do that again."

Jared turned to Zac, the junior volunteer who was working the early shift with him, and raised a questioning eyebrow. Zac nodded and counted down. "Three, two, one and-" he pointed at Jared, giving him his cue.

"So what brings you to this year's Spring Fling?"

Erica winked at him. "You do, because you're so hot."

Jared barely contained his groan. He had walked right into that one. "Any special plans for the festival? There is quite the variety this year. The Sig Eps are running a dunk booth, the Alpha Phis are freshly glossed at the kissing booth and the Astronomy club is having a blast over at the Bounce House. Lots of fun and food and festivities. How are you planning to celebrate?"

Jared cringed at his quick monologue. He had to say it but he definitely didn't write it. He and Zac were recording a brief promo that would run throughout the day, advertising the Fling. Jared's spiel would be followed by various answers edited together so that one voice flowed into the next. That is, if they could get one or two more straight answers first.

"Well, actually, I was hoping you would escort me to the Kane concert."

Jared blushed, still unsure how to handle the sudden influx of attention he had received. But he could always flirt with the best of them. "Aw shucks, darlin', I'd love to but I'm working."

"I can wait," Erica assured him, reaching forward and brushing her fingertips across his elbow. "When do you get off?"

Jared stared at the girl in front of him. He had to admit that she was pretty. She had long auburn hair that cascaded around her shoulders, the bright sun bringing out red highlights. She had a heart shaped face and wide blue eyes that were currently focused on an area somewhere south of Jared's eyes. She was definitely attractive and Jared approved of her simple t-shirt and denim shorts. He always preferred the casual look. But she wasn't exactly his type and Jared had never really mastered the art of letting someone down easy. He hated feeling like a bad guy.

"Tell you what. You go enjoy the concert and I'll plan on stopping by if I finish with everything I need to do early enough," Jared sidestepped the question.

"I can do that," Erica smiled, looking pleased with his answer. "Just find me when you get there."

"Will do," Jared promised. "But now I have to get back to work. Thanks for the soundbite."

Erica waved as she turned to walk away, tossing another coquettish smile over her shoulder. When she was finally far enough away, Jared turned to Zac and groaned. "Great," he muttered.

Zac laughed as he pushed a button, pressing the headphones against his ear. Jared waited patiently for the verdict. Zac stopped playback and glanced up. "Sounds good. There was enough there to work with, even leaving out the invitation. That makes, what, four already?"

"Shut up," Jared grumbled. He scanned the surrounding crowd for his next victim. Spying a familiar head of spiky blond hair, Jared motioned to Zac. "This way."

Chad saw Jared coming and grinned. "Man, how early were you up this morning? You were long gone by the time I woke up."

"Had to be here at eight to get everything setup," Jared shrugged. "I took first shift with Zac here. We just have to finish this spot and I'm free for the day."

Chad's eyes narrowed a bit as he looked Jared over. "Dude, don't take this the wrong way, but you look like shit."

"Thanks man," Jared glared at his roommate. "Just haven't been sleeping much. Since you feel the need to insult me every time I turn around, you can do this one little thing to make up for it." He held up the microphone and waved it in the other man's face.

"What exactly do you want me to do?"

Jared grinned at Chad's wary look. "Just tell me why you're here so I can finish this promo. Simple enough even you can handle it."

"Fine," Chad grumbled with a wave of his hand.

Zac was ready. He gave Jared his cue and Jared asked the question.

"So why are you here?"

Chad smirked. "I heard you were working the kissing booth. It's a shame I was wrong." Jared growled and kicked his friend in the shin. "Ow, fucker. Fine. I heard Sophia was here. Figured this was one place she can't hide from me. I'm going to catch some sun and head over to the picnic area. I need to apologize. And if that doesn't work, I'll try flowers or some shit like that."

"Charming," Jared muttered, drawing a finger across his neck for Zac to stop recording. "You know, you should probably leave Sophia alone, don't you? She's avoiding you for a reason. I love you, man, but you fucked up."

Chad sighed. "Yeah, I know. Anyway, I have to run. See you tonight?"

"If you come home, yeah," Jared nodded.

Chad was already lost in the crowd when Jared heard his name called. He turned to see Tom making his way across the busy quad.

Zac shook his head. "You really do know everyone, don't you?"

"Nah," Jared replied with a shrug of his shoulders. "Just seems that way. Hey man!" he greeted Tom as he drew near.

"Hey," Tom said with an easy smile. "Thought I might find you around here."

"Like always," Jared admitted. "I'm just about done. Need to swap out the promo we've been airing with something new. What about you? What brings you here?"

Tom glanced around, scanning the crowd. "You. Actually, I am going to meet up with some friends and see my buddy Chris perform. But I wanted to see if you were going to Mike's party tonight."

"That's the plan," Jared said. "I promised Mike I'd make an appearance."

"Great. There's someone I'd like you to meet."

Jared groaned. "Man, not you, too."

Tom gave him an odd look. "What?"

"It's just that since that stupid 'Bachelor' list was posted, everyone is either asking me out or trying to set me up with someone," Jared explained.

Tom laughed. "Dude, it's not like that. I just wanted to introduce you to one of my good friends. He's a fan of your show and I'm just surprised he hasn't met you already. I'm actually supposed to meet up with him now but I guess he isn't here yet."

Jared flushed. "Sorry, man. Didn't mean to jump to conclusions. Just catch me tonight."

Tom nodded. "Alright, I'll do that. I should go find him now. But we'll talk tonight?"

"Yeah," Jared agreed. "See you then."

Jared turned back to Zac as Tom walked off, tilting his head in a silent question. Zac shrugged. "I think we have enough here. I can edit it together and give it to Mike if you want to take off. I know you've been working doubles all week."

"You don't mind?" Jared hated leaving work to others but he had to admit he could use a break.

"Nah, I've got it covered," Zac replied. "Maybe you can go meet up with one of those hot girls from earlier. Or better yet, how about that one waving at you right now?"

Jared tossed a panicked look over his shoulder. Seeing Sandy headed towards him, his shoulders sagged with relief. Until he remembered the other girls. "Damn, I do need to at least look busy." His mind raced for a solution. "Oh, hey, do you still have your video camera with you?"

Zac laughed. "Like I go anywhere without it. I left it back in the van. You want to borrow it?" He leered at Sandy as she stopped next to Jared.

Jared rolled his eyes. "Yeah, if you don't mind. I can get it back to you Monday."

"Sure, let me go grab it," Zac said, smirking at Sandy before walking away.

Jared turned to his friend. "Ignore him."

Sandy raised an eyebrow. "Ok," she replied. "So, what's up?"

"You doing anything right now?"

Sandy shrugged. "I don't know, you tell me."

"I figured we could start on my vid project now, if you're up for it," Jared explained. "It doesn't hurt to get an early start."

Sandy laughed. "And you can avoid all those girls you had to let down easy today, right?"

"How'd you know about them?" Jared questioned with a frown.

"Jay, everyone is trying to get in your pants right now," Sandy teased. "Not that hard to figure out."

Jared groaned. He saw Zac approaching with his camera and leaned in closer to her. "Why Miss Sandra, are you trying to get in my pants, too?"

"I can help you with your project now, if you want," Sandy said loudly, ignoring Jared's teasing grin.

Jared bit his lip, struggling not to laugh at the expression on her face and turned to Zac. "You sure you're ok?"

Zac waved him off. "I'm fine," he said. "Go! Eat, drink, film dirty things."

Jared shook his head. "Come on, Sandy, let's go catch a concert."

Filming with Sandy was easier than Jared had thought it would be. She really knew what she was doing and helped Jared determine what angles would work best and pointed out the shots that would have the best natural lighting. "Have you picked out a song yet?"

"Not really," Jared replied, giving her a sheepish grin.

Sandy rolled her eyes. "You're impossible," she told him. "Come on, let's go film the crowd at the concert. We're bound to get something there that we can work with."

Jared followed after her, smiling as she muttered on and on about his irritating need for perfection when it came to music. He bit the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing out loud, not really wanting her to stop. "You know, you're kinda cute when you're mad."

"I'm not mad," she argued before sighing. "Just film the crowd, Jared."

Jared aimed the camera at the stage and pushed record. The band had been playing for nearly half an hour and he could feel the energy pulsing off of the crowd that had gathered. He focused on a small group of girls who were near the front, swooning forward, mouthing the words to the song. He did a slow pan across the group, seeing several familiar faces. Erica was there and Jared inched closer to a nearby tree, hoping she didn't catch sight of him. He zoomed in on a couple of guys who were jumping up and down to the beat. A little to the left and he caught sight of Tom and-

"Wow."

"What?" Sandy asked, unaware of what had caught his attention.

Jared walked along the edge of the crowd, his camera never losing sight of his subject. The guy was shorter than Tom, but not by much. He had short, light brown hair and when he turned his face toward the camera, Jared could see a light dusting of freckles across his pale skin. The guy looked directly at him and Jared felt his breath catch when he caught sight of the startling green eyes. "Wow," he said again as he stopped recording and dropped the camera to his side.

Sandy followed his gaze. "Well, I guess that answers that question," she said with a sad smile.

Jared turned and gave her a questioning look. "What question?"

"The 'is he or isn't he' question on everyone's mind," Sandy explained. She looked up at Jared, holding a hand to her forehead, shading her eyes from the sun. "You are, aren't you?"

Jared bit his lip. "Yeah," he admitted. "Is that a problem?"

Sandy shrugged. "Not really," she replied, but Jared heard the sadness in her voice. "So, who is that guy?"

Jared turned back to the crowd. The guy was nodding his head to the music, eyes closed and a small smile on his lips. Tom leaned in and whispered something to him, making him laugh. Jared wondered if that was the buddy Tom mentioned to him earlier. "I don't know," he said. "But something tells me I'm going to find out. Come on, let's get out of here."

Sandy frowned. "Aren't you going to talk to him?"

"Not right now," Jared told her. "Right now he's into the music and I desperately need a nap."

"But-" Sandy started as Jared grabbed her elbow and led her away.

"But nothing," Jared said, his voice strong and sure. "I'll be meeting him soon enough. I can promise you that."

Sandy tossed one more look over at the stage and caught the guy watching Jared as he walked away, a mixture of interest and disappointment in his eyes. She shook her head and smiled. She didn't think she'd ever truly understand Jared Padalecki. But one thing she did know for sure was that things always worked out for him in the end.

Green Eyes didn't stand a chance.
