If There's A Rocket Tie Me To It

Chapter Eleven: Between The Minds

There felt like a constant emptiness in Adam' apartment now Kris had left after three blissful days locked away here oblivious to anything going on outside. Everyone had practically ran out the door when they found out they had three days away from rehearsals and press and photo shoots and it had come at the perfect time because all Adam wanted to do was be with Kris. It really had all been going perfectly. He had watched Kris, fascinated by the way he looked around Adam' apartment and took in everything about the place, stopping to look closer at the pictures that hung on the wall, laughing every now and then when something he saw amused him - and Adam wanted to question every sound of laughter but he was quite happy watching from across the room and letting Kris enjoy himself.

Then everything seemed to fall into place and instead of Kris walking around trying to take everything in it just felt natural. The most normal thing was for him to be there like it was always going to be that way; almost as if there was a piece missing all along and Kris had been the only one who could fill it.

Neither of them wanted to leave the apartment, too caught up in each other and this new revelation, and it made them lose track of all sense of time. They hadn't even realized that two days had passed. Adam had been the one who had to convince Kris to get out of bed even though when he saw Kris underneath the covers - one bare leg showing and the sheets dangerously low on his stomach - Adam had to fight with every bit of self control he had to stop himself from jumping on the bed and forgetting another two days had gone by.

Of course Kris had noticed straight away and tried to use it to his advantage: stretching his arms wide and yawning, the sheet moving lower, and Adam had to turn away because he knew he couldn't ignore the twenty missed calls from Allison and Danny and the even more text messages. He really hadn't meant for Kris to get the impression that Adam wanted him to leave but the fact was that Kris was way too…well…distracting.

Kris response had been the most frustrating of all because he had just stood there. Adam ranted about Allison and Danny wanting to meet up and do something with at least one of their days off from the craziness and Kris just stood against the bathroom door frame watching as Adam washed his face and continued through his daily routine and the rant. And when he had turned to look at Kris he was all smiles and arms folded across his chest looking amused by the whole thing. He had tried to motivate Kris into moving and getting ready back at the hotel but Kris had just closed the space between them and squeezed their bodies tightly together and again Adam completely forgot what his point was. Being called adorable and sexy at the same time by Kris Allen was sort of strange and surreal especially when he had wanted it for so long and now it was happening, in his bathroom, the two of them... naked. Something which had amused Kris beyond anything else and then that was that. Adam literally was pushing Kris out the door.

Adam was finally alone and able to concentrate on things other than Kris. Except for the fact that everything he did seemed to remind him of Kris; the entire apartment was now covered with his belongings and it even smelled like him. Even the kitchen, which to be fair stocked hardly any food at all, now smelled like the weird bread Kris ate for breakfast every morning which Kris had insisted they get. A black leather bracelet that Kris had pulled off two nights ago and thrown down still lay in the same position and Adam picked it up and put it on, reminding himself to give it back when he saw him.

Clothes and even books…books? How was that even possible he had only been there for two days but they were all here, constant little reminders, and Adam felt like he should have been terrified but he felt relief and happiness at all those small things that to everyone else would have seemed pathetic and stupid but to him they meant everything because he had never had this with anyone. Not even remotely close to feeling this way before.

He was half ready, make-up on and hair half straightened. The last thing he needed to do was find a shirt. His cell phone vibrated on the table and Adam moved quickly to look at who was messaging him again. He smiled to himself when Kris’ name flashed up in his messages.

“Bring my coat. I left it in the bedroom. K x”

The small x was another distraction he really could have done without; he was beginning to feel like he was fourteen years old again with his first crush and he wondered when this feeling would start to fade with Kris because it had always been the same. Even when it had just been a crush on Adam' part the feelings were still as new and strong now as they had been then and he couldn't seem to stop himself from smiling.

He threw his phone on the sofa and moved quickly to the bedroom seeking out Kris' jacket quickly and throwing it next to his own leather one. He finished straightening his hair as quickly as he could, suddenly very aware that he was meeting everyone in half an hour at the hotel and he was nowhere near as ready as he should be. He searched through his clothes trying to figure out what to wear and he settled on a plain black shirt because he really had no idea what Alli and Danny had planned.

He rushed out the door and grabbed both coats and his cell and quickly messaged Kris back.

“I've got it and I'm on my way now. A x”

He was going to drive - he probably should have seeing as he was running late - but it was only twenty minutes. He wanted the time for some clarity: to just escape from the apartment and from the all consuming thoughts he had about Kris, which of course was useless because every time he told himself that he should be thinking about something else he found himself thinking about Kris again. As he walked, a huge grin spread across his face and he was fairly certain he looked like an idiot.

He was glad it was quiet and not many people were out on the streets. For a change there was no one following him with a camera and asking the same boring questions over and over again. He walked quicker, eager to see Kris and he pretended that he was excited to see everyone else too but the truth of it was that it really was all about Kris and what made it so pathetic was that it hadn't even been two hours since the last time he had seen him. He laughed to himself quietly and then practically broke out into a run when he turned the corner and saw the hotel.

Danny, Allison and Lil were already standing out front, Danny and Lil laughing at Allison who appeared to be making crazy gestures with her arms and Adam could only imagine she was telling them both about something clumsy she had done that morning. Anoop and Megan were slowly leaving the main entrance, both of them looking tired and unwilling to be joining everyone on this little outing. Adam instinctively looked around for Kris but he wasn't there yet. So he sped up and Allison' eyes seemed to light up when she saw Adam. She bounded through Danny and Lil and threw herself at Adam almost knocking the two of them to the ground and he could hear the laughter from the others as he threw his arms around Allison.

“Careful there Alli, we don't want you falling over again...”

“How did you know I already fell down today?”

Adam laughed and pulled away. “I didn't know but you know, it’s you, so I just assumed it must have happened.”

She hit him lightly on the arm before turning to look back at the others, jumping around with excitement. “Where's Kris? It's time to go!”

Danny laughed. “Alli, the movie is going to be there all day you know?”

“I know, but it's been ages since I went and the fact that it's with all of you guys…well, it makes it even more exciting.” Then she was turning back to look at Adam her eyes wide and pleading. “Can we go get pizza after too Adam?”

Adam shook his head. “Oh Alli... excited about pizza and a movie. How I'd love to be seventeen again.”

They were all laughing now and Allison faked hurt feelings and moved to stand next to Lil who was motherly, throwing her arms around Allison' shoulders. Danny was moving closer to him, still smiling in Alli's direction.

“You at seventeen? Now that would have been interesting.”

“Yeah I think that would have been too much of a shock for you, Gokey.”

“Fair point.”

There was a small silence between the two of them as Adam watched the others group together. He was sure he saw Anoop and Megan staring at him and then whispering to Allison and Adam couldn't help but feel like he was on display all of a sudden.

Danny nudged his arm and he turned to face him, wanting to look away from the prying eyes. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah.” Adam nodded and his smile widened automatically because he knew exactly what Danny was referring to and it made him think of Kris instantly.

Danny laughed slightly. “I guess I don't need to ask what happened with you and Kris over the last couple of days...”

“Well...” Adam' smile changed to a smirk and he raised his eyebrow.

“I'm on a strictly need-to-know basis here Adam.” He held up his hands and laughed again. He seemed different from the last time he remembered seeing Danny: he looked relaxed and the stress and pain that had radiated from him seemed to have faded.

“Thank you. For the other night. I never said that and it means a lot that you were there for me... again.” Adam smiled and Danny was serious now, nodding his head, clearly not used to someone showing him any sign of gratitude. “I heard what you said to Kris too, I think you both thought I was asleep but I heard what you said and I just wanted you to know that it meant a lot to me...”

Danny was shaking his head slightly. “To be honest I felt like I was just butting into things that were none of my business. Well that's the impression I got from Kris and I don't really blame him for feeling that way. Everything he said has been right; I've given him no reason to trust me but I'm hoping that might change.”

“You seem more positive than the last time we spoke.”

“I spoke to the guys about things, like you said. Matt and Alli were great, well Allison didn't really know there was any problem. She just hugged me and told me to stop being a dork and that no one would ever like me if I walked around look miserable all the time.”

Adam laughed loudly. “She's got a way with words that one, hasn't she?”

Danny nodded. “Matt was great. I think a lot of it was from me, my perception of what they were all thinking, and it sort of all got messed up at some point. Things got out of hand I guess but hopefully it’s all turned a corner. We've got to be together for all this time and I don't want to be causing anyone any upset...”

Adam shook his head. “I told you. All you need to do is be yourself and, you know, maybe cut down on acting like an ass every time a camera comes anywhere near you.” Adam smiled widely and Danny had grown accustomed to his humour and was smiling back now.

“Well I would say I'd get some advice from you but that won't work now, will it?”

“Good come back, Gokey. I see I've taught you a few things at least.”

The group by the entrance grew larger and Matt was helping Scott through the door and Adam could already see Kris trailing behind. It felt like there was a filter for everyone else and that he was aware of nothing but Kris. He knew that Kris knew he was watching because he was turning his head and their eyes met and he knew the smile that grew across his face matched his own and then suddenly they were all in a big circle and Adam was standing across from Kris and he knew they were all talking, some of them even at him, but he wasn't listening because all he could think about was the three foot distance between him and Kris and how much he hated it.

Kris expression seemed to change into one of anger and Adam knew he must have been listening to the conversation that he had failed to. He could vaguely hear Michael' name being mentioned and it was only then that he realized he was missing. Scott was talking, awkward and uneasy, explaining that Michael was spending time with his family. The way all their eyes shifted and some of them seemed annoyed spoke loud and clear and Adam wanted to laugh because he knew they were angry for him and in this situation there was no reason to be. This way he got to spend the day with people he actually liked and wanted to be with.

He clapped his hands together loudly and it seemed to pull everyone out of their daydreams and then he was ushering everyone forward. He listened to Allison's story about how she had managed to get the movie theatre to let them have a screen to themselves after using all her people skills. He let her enjoy the moment even though he was fairly sure that it wasn't entirely her skills that made it get approval, he felt it would be mean to burst her happy little bubble. But then he was stood beside Kris, everyone else in front of them and Kris’ little finger was brushing against his and he turned to look at Kris, who was biting his bottom lip and smiling to himself.

“I missed you earlier.”

Adam laughed quietly not wanting to draw the attention to himself from the others. “It was two hours.”

“I still missed you.” Kris finger was still lightly tracing across Adam' as they walked along. “Didn't you miss me?”

Adam shrugged nonchalantly. He didn't know why he bothered to pretend, he knew that Kris would see through it straight away. Adam laughed again and he could hear Kris beside him laughing too. “Of course I missed you.”

“Good. I should think so.”

“You know what I was thinking though?”

“What's that?”

Adam breathed in deeply. The truth was that he had been thinking about it the entire two days they had been locked away together and he had just been looking for the right time and the courage to suggest it and for some bizarre reason he had found it now. He lowered his voice slightly and slowed his pace and Kris followed.

“I know we only have a couple of weeks before the tour kicks off and we aren't even going to be there but maybe... I don't know maybe you could move your stuff into my apartment... on a permanent basis, you know? Like you could live there... or something. What do you think?”

He heard Kris breath in and he was sure he heard a small laugh leave Kris’ mouth but he refused to turn and look at him. So he just kept walking, their fingers touching every now and again.

“Is that what you really want?”

Adam nodded quickly, hoping that Kris had caught the movement.

“It would mean telling these guys...” Adam turned to look at Kris now and Kris was staring ahead, his expression troubled. “I mean I think me packing up and moving into your apartment might raise a few questions and they'll probably think that they are all invited and that's something we definitely don't want.”

Adam laughed in spite of his concern of Kris saying no. They were both looking ahead now though, at the backs of their friends’ and he wished he could tell what Kris was thinking and he also wished that he hadn't opened his mouth because what if it was all too much too soon.

“It's too soon, isn't it?”

Kris was quick to reply. “No, no, no. That's not it. I want to be with you all the time but I don't know how to tell them. I don't know if they'll understand.”

Adam nodded because he understood, of course he did and how could they both stand in front of everyone and explain what was going on when they didn't properly understand it either.

“First of all, it's us telling them, not just you, and I think that they'll be okay. And if they aren't, well we'll cross that when we come to it. For me I just need to know this is what you want. That living with me is something you think you could deal with...”

Kris voice was filled with happiness and excitement and the joy it sent travelling through Adam was exhilarating. “Are you kidding me? These last few days have been two of the best days of my life - just being with you and watching you and all your little quirks... god you're adorable...” His voice seemed to trail off in a way that Adam knew Kris was reliving a memory.

“Stop calling me adorable. I have an image to uphold.”

“Sorry, rocker boy, I forgot...”

They turned to meet each others’ eyes and they both knew their smiles were ridiculously happy and Adam felt practically giddy. It wasn't until they walked into Matt's back did they realize they had all stopped, only it wasn't where Adam had expected they would be.

There was no movie theatre and the streets were literally deserted and he was beginning to think that his friends had all managed to get lost in a part of L.A that even he didn't know about. He was going to turn to them and ask exactly where they were when Matt turned to look at the two of them and then gestured with his head to a building to the left of him. There was a restaurant, an unappealing and not busy one, and he wondered if Matt was joking but when he turned back everyone was looking at the both of them with their arms crossed as if they were all waiting for something.

“Guys what's going on?” Kris sounded just as confused as he did.

“I really think that should be our question don't you?” Matt was enjoying this all a little too much if you asked Adam and he watched Matt's and everyone else's eyes move down to where Kris and Adam' fingers were still joined. Adam didn't even go to pull them away and Kris was already joining their fingers together tighter. Adam turned to look at Kris he expected to see fear across his face but Kris seemed relaxed and he smiled at Adam before shrugging his shoulders and turning to look at Matt and the others.

Matt was talking again, his voice determined, and Adam knew he wasn't backing down. “Right inside, both of you. I think you have some explaining to do.”
