It was the greatest thing in the world to see Kibum throw Jonghyun a quick, small smile as they struggled to carry their luggage off the train. Although, it made him wonder what usually went through his head when Kibum had to do this alone.

All things considered, Jonghyun was part-excited, part-nervous about this trip. It wasn’t the first time he’d be meeting Kibum’s parents face-to-face, but it was the first time he’d get to visit Kibum’s childhood home. He was determined not to let the nervous part of him show, if only for Kibum who needed all the support he could get whenever he visited his family. His mother was doing better now, good enough to have picked up a casual, part-time job, but Jonghyun knew this place held all kinds of memories in Kibum’s eyes, some not at all pleasant.

Which was why he had resolved himself to keep a plastered smile on his face and tried to remind Kibum every chance he got that they’d finally get to do it in his childhood bed. Kibum usually followed that with some variation of “You’d better behave” but he’d be smiling a little as he said it and that was all Jonghyun wanted.

Kibum’s father picked them up at the train station, and Jonghyun made sure to bow for a few long moments, thanking him for it and for having him over. Kibum’s father wasn’t a very talkative man (curiously enough), but he had an easy smile and a no-nonsense way about things that Jonghyun could appreciate. And, perhaps most importantly, he didn’t seem to mind which gender his son was dating, which never failed to have Jonghyun thanking his lucky stars.

Kibum’s Daegu home turned out to be a comfortably-sized, two-story apartment. Suddenly, it became a little clearer why Kibum had never been tight on money. As soon as they set foot inside, Jonghyun peeked around curiously, simultaneously taking in the delicious smell wafting in from what must have been the kitchen. They barely had time to set their luggage down before they were being ushered towards the dinner table by his mother and grandmother. Then it was a flurry of more bows on Jonghyun’s part, and he would forever deny the profuse, nervous sweating that lasted throughout dinner. He did however indulge himself in letting his hand rest on Kibum’s thigh under the table, though. Kibum would squeeze his hand from time to time, and Jonghyun had to admit he appreciated the gesture.

Dinner came to an end soon enough, and Jonghyun thought he had passed whatever informal test he’d been subjected to by the way Kibum’s family was smiling at them. Only Kibum’s dad sometimes stared at him for longer than Jonghyun was comfortable with, gaze unwavering in a way that was slightly unsettling, but he didn’t say anything so Jonghyun considered it a win.

Kibum gave him a short tour of the apartment afterwards, finally showing him his room which prompted more dirty jokes out of Jonghyun and had Kibum shaking his head in turn. Kibum almost succeeded in shoving him down the stairs, but something caught the elder’s eye and had him stopping midway. A series of photographs, mostly portraits, hung along the wall and a particular one had Jonghyun doing a double take.

“Is that..?”

Kibum flushed and tried to push him along, but Jonghyun stayed put to stare at the picture, letting out a cooing sound.

“Shut up,” Kibum spoke lowly, voice softer than it usually was when reprimanding Jonghyun. Still, his hands pushed insistently at Jonghyun’s back.

“I’m a bit surprised I’ve never seen this before,” Jonghyun commented, gesturing towards the standard school portrait featuring a very young, round-cheeked Kibum.

“I was a chubby kid, okay?” Kibum bit back, tone flustered. The next second he was squeezing past Jonghyun in an attempt to flee.

“Hey, hey,” Jonghyun quickly grabbed his arm and pulled him back in. “You were adorable.”

Kibum shrugged, somewhat tense under Jonghyun’s grip and obviously ill-at-ease.

“Give me some credit here,” Jonghyun spoke softly, reaching out to grasp Kibum’s other hand. “You know I love you for more than the way you look.”

Kibum slowly lifted his eyes to meet his, seeming wary.

“Oh come on!” Jonghyun implored, taking a step back to look at Kibum properly, holding his gaze. “You know I don’t care when you whine about your hair turning the wrong colour, or about the clothes you do or don’t wear,” Jonghyun enumerated quickly, adding, “and if you gained weight there’d just be more of you to hold.”

Kibum hid his face behind his hands, Jonghyun’s falling to his sides, although Kibum didn’t quite conceal the blush rising on his cheeks.

“You’re so…” he mumbled, trailing off for a moment.

“Cheesy?” Jonghyun supplied with a slightly anxious chuckle.

Kibum breathed in slowly before lowering his hands and trading glances with Jonghyun, who was relieved to see the deep brown shade of his eyes again. “No,” he finally said, “I mean, yeah, but you’re a good boyfriend.”

Jonghyun preened under the praise, a wide smile stretching his lips and chest puffing out a little. He knew he must have looked like a dork, but he couldn’t bring himself to care, not when Kibum was smiling softly at him.

“Although I might love myself a little more if you happened to be shorter than me,” Jonghyun added.

Kibum went up a step so that he was towering over Jonghyun and leaned down to peck him quickly on the lips.

“And you should know that I’d love you no matter your height - or lack of.”

“Aw see, I was being all nice and then you had to go and mock my sense of self-worth.”

“You’re a big boy,” Kibum answered quickly, having found his spark again, “you can handle it.”

Kibum leaned down to kiss him once more, slower this time, and Jonghyun stepped up with a small growl, hands folding around Kibum’s hips before moving lower to pinch his ass. Kibum hissed into their kiss but soon dissolved into chuckles against Jonghyun’s lips. He pulled them apart with a loud smack, grabbing at Jonghyun’s wrists to take his hands off his ass and lead him down the stairs. Jonghyun tried to grope him again but Kibum kept a firm hold on his wrists.

“How did we end up together, again?” Kibum asked sarcastically and, despite being the butt of the joke, Jonghyun was glad for the return of his snarky tone.

“You were this adorable transfer student,” Jonghyun humoured him, “all shy and - no wait, you weren’t shy at all. You came up to my lunch table and asked if you could sit, and then I told you yes, in my lap.”

Kibum chortled at Jonghyun’s slightly twisted retelling, twirling around to face him at the foot of the stairs. Jonghyun stopped on the bottom step, just on principle.

“And when you scoffed and rolled your eyes at me instead of running away, I knew you were the one for me.”

Instead of the bashful eye-roll Jonghyun was expecting, Kibum merely threaded their fingers together before uttering a soft, “I’m glad you came, Jjong.”

“Me too,” he answered, which was the truth, even after the slightly nerve-wracking dinner and, “even if your dad keeps looking at me like I stole your virginity or something.”

“You did,” Kibum piped up, matter-of-factly.

“Yes but that was years ago!” Jonghyun played along. “I thought he’d have let it go by now. Or maybe it’s because I’m a city boy and I’m robbing you of your purer, country-side ways.”

“Oh my god shut up Daegu isn’t a farmland!” Kibum was getting comically flustered, and Jonghyun couldn’t seem to stop.

“We took the train together, Kibum, don’t tell me you didn’t see a whole lot of nothing outside the window coming here.”

Kibum’s reply was tinged with laughter, this time, “That’s because you fell asleep, dumbass!”

Jonghyun smiled, stepping down the last step and watching fondly as Kibum fought back a smile of his own. He brought his forehead to Kibum’s, crowding him against the wall and Kibum’s expression grew serious again.

“Seriously, thank you for coming.”

Jonghyun simply nodded; he was glad he came, too. “What are awesome boyfriends for?” he asked, and Kibum (finally) rolled his eyes, looking all the more exasperated when Jonghyun followed it up with, “Come on, let’s go make out on the couch to traumatize your dad.”

“And you wonder why he side-eyes you…” Kibum mumbled, grabbing at Jonghyun’s wrists before he could reach for his ass again. He let Jonghyun get away with a few lingering kisses, though.
