Jonghyun fretted about the dorm room one last time, picking up his guitar from where it lay on the bed to tune it yet again and making sure that everything else was in order. He stretched the waistband of his jeans to confirm he was indeed wearing his best briefs and made his way out of the room with a nervous sigh, although not before checking that his hair was styled nicely.

He made a stop at a small coffee shop, picking up Kibum’s favourite decaffeinated drink. It was outrageously overpriced in his opinion, but Kibum loved it and he happened to love Kibum. He ran into Taemin there and wished him good luck with studying when the younger boy ordered a double shot espresso, considering the rather late hour. Taemin then said it wasn’t for studying and Jonghyun frowned but dismissed it easily because this was Taemin after all.

He headed towards a familiar building, the place looking somewhat haunted now that it was devoid of students. It was eerily silent as he took the stairs two by two, silently rehearsing the speech he’d memorized for the occasion and hoping that Kibum wouldn’t want to simply face-plant onto their mattress upon returning to the dorm. It may not have seemed like it but Jonghyun had done his best to come up with something to salvage the evening and he was determined to see it happen.

He stepped into the second floor’s lobby quietly, trying to spot Kibum before the other saw him. There were only a few students left as well as a janitor. They were folding tables and chairs and otherwise helping clean up; Kibum’s faculty held symposiums every so often, and Kibum had somehow gotten himself involved with the committee that organized them. Jonghyun knew how much work it was, having heard Kibum complain before, but tonight’s timing was even worse because it was also Kibum’s birthday.

He spotted Kibum soon enough, breath catching in his throat; Kibum always looked so good when he dressed up for events like these and it never failed to stir something up in Jonghyun. He was wearing a crisp, white dress shirt along with lightly-striped tailored pants, a black tie hanging loosely from his neck and Jonghyun vaguely wondered if it was his birthday instead.

He sneaked up behind Kibum, careful not to be seen, and placed a hand on his shoulder. Kibum swivelled around abruptly, only to smile when he realized it was Jonghyun. He looked tired yet genuinely glad to see Jonghyun, and suddenly the words the elder had practiced seemed kind of empty, if not meaningless in comparison to the feeling that bubbled up inside his chest. He simply smiled back, handing Kibum his drink.

“Happy birthday, ‘Bum,” he greeted him instead, chuckling lightly when Kibum took a sip and moaned in delight at the sweet taste. Kibum reached over to tangle their fingers together briefly, Jonghyun’s smile stretching at the gesture.

“I’m almost done,” he told the elder, “be right back.” He handed the drink back to Jonghyun, disappearing along with the other students as they stowed the remaining tables away. He came back with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows and his collar unbuttoned, and Jonghyun was left staring rather dumbly. Kibum chuckled as he walked up to him, swiping a thumb at a corner of Jonghyun’s lips.

“You’re drooling,” he joked with a smirk, taking his drink back before leading Jonghyun out by their entwined hands. It was chilly outside, so Jonghyun pulled Kibum closer, back-to-chest, as soon as they stepped into the empty elevator.  He had to stretch himself a bit to hook his chin over Kibum’s shoulder, hands finding their way into Kibum’s front pockets. Kibum relaxed back against him, letting out a small, contented sigh.

“You have something in mind, don’t you,” Kibum asked, a curious lilt to his voice. Jonghyun poked his cold nose into the skin of Kibum’s neck and stifled a grin. He nodded his head slightly as an answer.

“I’m expecting great things, Jjong,” Kibum informed him playfully, seeming amused by Jonghyun’s silence. “It’s my birthday and I’ve had to work all day.”

“Well, then…” Jonghyun pretended to ponder, playing along with faked innocence. “I was thinking we could make out, and then I’d blow you in your suit until you come and suck you some more until you’re hard enough to pound me.”

He felt Kibum stiffen in his hold before he turned around to face him, dark eyes going round as he appraised Jonghyun. Jonghyun had to admit he felt a little smug about it.

“You know,” Kibum spoke slowly, eyes drifting over Jonghyun’s face, a slight look of wonder taking over his expression, “I think you’re getting the hang of dirty talk.”

Jonghyun smiled crookedly, hands slipping to Kibum’s ass to tug him closer just as the younger boy's arms wrapped around his neck.

“I have my guitar, too,” Jonghyun went on. “I’ll play you anything you want tomorrow when you wake up.”

“That’s more like it,” Kibum teased with a grin before leaning down to press a soft kiss to Jonghyun’s lips. “Thank you.”

They got off on their floor, frowning as they turned the corner and saw two neon pink sticky notes stuck to their door. Jonghyun had a slight suspicion as to who they came from and, surely enough, one of them simply wished Kibum a happy birthday with Onew’s signature at the bottom while the other unsigned one advised them to keep their celebration as quiet as possible. Kibum guffawed loudly and ripped them off the door, only to stop dead when he noticed the or I won’t give your headphones back scribbled on the back of one of them.
