Jonghyun felt bad. And when he felt bad, he did laundry.
Some would say it was an act of redemption in this case, but Jonghyun liked to think it was because he was an attentive, loving boyfriend. And if there was a cooked meal waiting on the counter along with two pairs of chopsticks, well, that was simply further proof of his big heart. It certainly had nothing to do with the previous night’s doings and everything to do with wanting to dote on his significant other, clearly.

Kibum sat at his desk, back to Jonghyun as the latter lounged around on the bed - yes, the bed, because even though there were technically two in the room, the other served more as a table for spare clothes and the like rather than as an actual bed - busying himself on his phone. He’d been staring off into space for a while, mind wandering, when his gaze focused back on Kibum, who was dutifully bent over his homework. Jonghyun was willing to bet that his eyebrows were drawn up in concentration, his mouth slightly opened, and suddenly the urge to see struck him.
As quietly as he could, he set his phone down and tiptoed across the small room to loom over Kibum. He was so absorbed in his work that he didn’t even look up. He tensed when Jonghyun’s hands slid over his shoulders, the elder sort of draping himself over him. Kibum loosened up under his weight, going back to filling the worksheet in front of him.
“What are you doing?” Jonghyun mumbled as he nuzzled into the other’s blond hair.
“Assignment,” was Kibum’s curt reply.
It was very late already, and Jonghyun knew Kibum had had a long day. Yet, Kibum was also very diligent about homework and Jonghyun knew for a fact that he had never handed in anything late in his life. He was one of the hardest-working people Jonghyun had ever met, and for all that it made him proud sometimes he wished Kibum would take it easy. Luckily, Jonghyun was very good at making Kibum take it easy, at soothing him until he became soft and pliant. He had to admit it was one of his finer, more enviable skills.
Jonghyun’s fingers toyed with the neckline of his shirt, nose tucked behind his ear. Kibum merely kept ignoring him, but Jonghyun didn’t fail to notice how the pace of his writing was slowing down. Jonghyun then pressed his lips to Kibum’s neck for a warm, lingering kiss, and he knew he’d won by the heavy sigh Kibum let out.
Kibum leaned back against him and Jonghyun took the opportunity to cross his arms around his neck. He hid a smile into his hair when Kibum heaved another sigh, this one more impatient.
“Congratulations,” Kibum spoke blandly, in that tone that told Jonghyun he wasn’t too annoyed with him. It was a close call. “You’ve distracted me.”
Jonghyun stifled a chuckle and when he pulled Kibum up and tugged him towards the bed, Kibum followed.

The bed was empty when Jonghyun woke up, Kibum’s bag long-gone and his desk tidy. Jonghyun rolled onto his side, sheets tangling with his legs as he blinked blearily at the digital clock to the side. It was late morning already, and Jonghyun struggled to clear the sleepy haze filling his mind before remembering that Kibum had an early class on Wednesdays. An uncomfortable weight settled into the pit of his stomach, making him uneasy. He felt inexplicably selfish, worried that he might have caused more trouble than good even if he’d only (fine, partly) meant to keep Kibum from over-working himself.
He forced himself out of bed quickly, determined to get a few things done before his own classes.
Which ultimately led to him here, clock showing a quarter past eight in the evening. He was standing by the small counter that doubled as a kitchen table, fretting over a big steaming pile of, well, something that looked edible enough and that was covered with melted cheese. Kibum liked cheese.
He smoothed his palms over his jeans - the pale ones that Kibum had told him looked nice some time ago - when he heard the door unlock.
Kibum stepped inside and Jonghyun turned around to face him, conveniently hiding the counter behind him. Kibum’s gaze lingered on him suspiciously, but there was also a bit of concern in his expression.
“Are you okay?” he asked, still eyeing him up and down, “I saw Minho in the hallway and he says you’ve been running around all day for some reason.”
Jonghyun waved a hand in dismissal, all too casual as he shrugged. “It’s nothing, I’m fine.” He expertly twisted himself around the counter as Kibum walked past him, hiding his creation. Kibum dropped his bag next to his desk, freezing midway through the motion as he noticed the empty laundry basket and the neat stack of fresh, folded clothes on the bed. Kibum casted him another long look, this time entirely out of suspicion.
“You did my laundry,” he stated plainly. Jonghyun shrugged again and cringed internally at how awkward he was coming off. This had all gone by much smoother when he’d imagined it.
“You say that like I never do,” Jonghyun replied, suddenly wondering if Kibum’s dislike of other people touching his stuff applied to him and his dirty clothes, too. He had surely never complained before, but then again he’d usually asked Jonghyun to do it before. A tinge of fear sparked through him at the thought.
Kibum came up to him and grabbed his shoulders to move him aside, revealing the slowly cooling pot of food behind him.
“And you cooked,” Kibum went on as if that were a revelation in itself. Jonghyun wanted to correct him, again, because he did cook sometimes even though most times it only involved heating up leftovers or his mother’s homemade meals.
Jonghyun was beginning to think straightforwardness might be the best approach, after all.
“Look, I’m sorry I kept you up last night and didn’t let you finish your assignment,” he apologized, making his eyes round as he schooled his expression into his pitiful puppy dog stare. It had a devastatingly low rate of success when it came to Kibum, but Jonghyun thought it was always worth trying. “I just wanted to make it up to you,” he finished simply.
Kibum looked at him blankly for a long moment before a corner of his lips finally curled into a little smile. He put his hands on either side of Jonghyun’s waist and drew him closer.
“Thank you,” he said, and Jonghyun let himself relax a little, “but it was fine. It was a short assignment and I finished it this morning. Guess you were lucky,” Kibum added, his small, crooked smile still in place. Jonghyun beamed back. “I do have priorities, after all,” he teased.
Jonghyun brought his hands up to cradle his face and pulled him in for a long, sweet kiss. Kibum kissed back eagerly, moving in to press him against the counter. Disaster avoided, then.
