I made an edit to my post (though I still rather want to see first what I'm paying for before I pay for it).
I don't see a need to switch just yet; I found posting in both places is a good option, and DW's cross-posting option makes it really easy. I'll stay aboard the Titanic until the band starts playing...
I've been doing the DW crosspost thing as well. I may have to ante up at DW to get to use my lovely icons now. I hope more of my LJ old friends (and following_sea!) will come over.
I'm sure they will, eventually. The new friendslist might be just the straw that breaks the camel's back; many people have stopped posting already, if they stop reading and commenting as well, then that's the end for LJ.
I'm not commenting on LJ's general direction and don't want to get involved with that discussion at the moment, but if anyone hasn't seen it, this post at lj_releases addresses the comments about "canceling" paid accounts.
Thanks for letting us know about the paid accounts.
LJ certainly isn't cool at all - my son once said that the only people who used LJ were fanfic writers and blinkie artists and so most people tended to keep away. I told him that he was over generalising but his friends also have that impression too.
I made an edit to the post; LJ have posted a clarification re paid accounts (which doesn't change my POV, though).
I can see where LJ is coming from, and what they want to do (there was a rather revealing interview by a LJ executive a while ago), I just don't think it will work.
I'm iffy about the 'new' LJ as well. I've been a member, though this journal is a new 'clean slate', since 2001, and I'm not caring for this stuff much at all. I'll stick to it for a while, but looking into DW.
I crosspost everything from DW, and that works well for me. People can reply where they want, and I can keep in touch with those who left LJ. I'm not against changes, but I don't think the one LJ is planning will work out. We'll see...
Can't they see it already is a social network? And in my opinion it's one of the best, because you can have a proper conversation on LJ. Have you tried to have a conversation on Tumblr? It's impossible. Twitter is good, but it's real time and very NOW focused. Facebook is a little better, but LJ is the one that does it right.
Their definition of social network is Facebook. Tumblr is nice for some things, but no, conversations are impossible. I think, DW aside, Wordpress is the only place I can see myself moving to. It's really sad that actual social interaction as we've had it here on LJ for so many years is cast aside in favour of this face "frienship" prompoted by FB et al.

I'd switch to DW, but a lot of my communities are here, as are a lot of my friends. :(
