Chapter 28: Leaving

[Was it me, nee-chan? Was I a bad boy?]“Daddy, can you read us a bed time story?”

“Um, I’m not really good with bed time stories.”

“Please Daddy? Nee-chan, help me convince Daddy.”

“Oh no. Oh no no no. Don't give me that look you two. I have no idea what to - oh there's your Papa. I'm sure your Papa has a good bed time story!” Jin looked at him pleadingly.

Save me!

Kazuya gave Jin an amused glanced. The truth was, he had arrived earlier and was listening in on them. It was adorable how Jin fumbled.

“Papa?” Ruki asked hopefully.

“Alright,” he conceded.

“Yey!” Ruki cheered.

Ami beamed. “Thank you Papa.”

“Anything for you two.” Kazuya kissed the children's foreheads.

“Daddy wants a kiss too,” Ami teased.

“You, my girl, are such a smart lady.” Jin grinned at her and then pouted at Kazuya. “Don't you think the King deserves a kiss from his Queen?”

“One, I am not your Queen-”

“Yet.”

“-and two,” Kazuya continued, ignoring Jin's interjection. He leaned in. “I doubt you want something as innocent as a kiss on the forehead.”

Jin's grin grew wider. “Fine. But you owe me a kiss. And one does not owe a king and not pay back.”

“Of course, your highness,” Kazuya affirmed in a teasing manner. He turned to the two children who were watching them intently. “I gather you're ready for your bed time story?”

“Yes!” Ami and Ruki chorused.

Kazuya smiled and sat down beside the children who were lying down between Jin and him. “I'm going to tell you of the story my grandmother used to tell me and my siblings. The story of this kingdom before the great tragedy…”

Long ago, in a forest near the kingdom, farmers who were only looking for herbs found a strange creature. This creature looked just like a young white horse. But when they came closer, they saw that it had a horn on its forehead.

“A unicorn!” Ruki interrupted.

“Yes, Ruki. It was a unicorn. That unicorn was injured and so couldn't run away.”

“What happened next, Papa?” Ami asked, intrigued.

“Well…”

“What should we do? This creature is injured, we can not just leave it here.”

“But it can be dangerous!”

“It does not look dangerous…”

While the men were discussing among themselves, a person came towards them.

The farmers stared in awe for the person was very beautiful. She looked like she came from a royal family.

“Excuse me, my lady. But are you lost?”

“I'm…a man.” The lady - or the man, as he had corrected - fingered his short hair, wondering how the farmers could have mistaken him for a girl.

“Oh we're terribly sorry. It’s just that, we seldom see anyone so refined and graceful so we thought…Please forgive our insolence!” One of the farmers apologized, still thinking the man had royal bloodline. Them common people did not such fine complexion.

The man smiled. “It's fine. I just came to retrieve my friend here.” He knelt down near the young unicorn and placed his hand on its injured foot, all the while whispering softly on the creature's ear.

The unicorn relaxed, trusting the mysterious man, and after a few seconds, he was able to stand up. His foot was healed.

The men were not able to say anything and just watched as the man stood up and left, the one-horned creature following him.

Soon after, the man showed up again. But this time, he had saved a merchant that almost fell from a cliff.

When the merchant was asked by the townsfolk of how he was avoided such great misfortune, he said, "Gold lights. Gold lights illuminated the dark path, making me notice the cliff. I was able to halt my horse in time. My horse was scared and continued to run but the man clad in gold lights calmed my horse down with a soft whisper."

From then on, the magical man was known as The Whisperer.

The townsfolk asked him to stay. He declined at first, saying he cannot leave his family and friends behind but the people insisted, saying all of them can stay in the kingdom.

The royal family also wanted them in Azure.

The King said, “You are a good man even if you are different from us and I believe your people are good too. You can treat this place as your home.”

The man promised to come back with his people. A week passed before he returned, bringing with him several equally good looking men and women. The royal family and the rest of the citizens welcomed them warmly.

Several months passed and the other magical creatures were drawn towards the kingdom of Azure. And just like the Whisperers, they were welcomed and treated with respect as they made their home with the humans.

“That's a wonderful story Papa.” Ami said, yawning right after.

“I bet you're more beautiful than that man, Papa,” Ruki said, his eyes droopy.

“Of course. Your Papa is the most beautiful,” Jin said proudly.

Kazuya smacked Jin's arm lightly. “Don't say that.”

“No need to be so modest, my love.”

Kazuya pointedly ignored that, his cheeks burning in embarrassment at the compliment. He glanced at the children and saw that they were already asleep.

“Sweet dreams, my lovely children,” he whispered fondly. He looked at Jin who had also said his good-night to the children. “Good night Jin.”

“Good night, love.” Jin reached to touch Kazuya's stomach gently. “Good night, my little prince. Papa and I can’t wait to see you.”

Unknown to them, Ruki was still actually awake. And his little mind was riddled with the thoughts that once the baby is born, he and his sister will no longer have this warmth.

-----------------------------------------

“Ruki? Where are you going?”

Ruki stopped and put his finger on his lips. “Shh Nee-chan. Come.”

Ami looked at her brother, confused.

Where was his brother going in the wee hours of the morning?

But she followed nonetheless.

When they reached their own room and Ruki started packing their clothes, she frowned. “Ruki, it's too early to play games. Come on, Papa and Daddy will wonder if they wake up without us.”

“They won't.”

“Huh?” Her brother was not himself today.

“They won't wonder nee-chan.”

“What are you saying Ruki?”

“Papa's having a prince, nee-chan. They don’t need us anymore.”

Ami sighed. “That's not true Ruki. Papa and Daddy love us.”

“Was it me, nee-chan? Was I a bad boy?” Ruki rubbed his teary eyes with his little hands.

“It's not your fault. Hush now, Ruki.” Ami hugged her little brother. She knew Ruki was acting strange. So this was it. The boy was threatened because their Papa was going to have a baby boy. Ruki used to have that position. It's understandable that he would react like this.

She herself was a little worried. After all, they were not really from royal bloodline. Their positions were uncertain and she knew they could never be considered as heirs to the royal crown. Not that she wanted it. She was content with their Papa and Daddy's love.

But should anything happen to their Daddy, they would be easily thrown out of the palace because there was already a legitimate heir. They would be left on their own - again.

Herself, she could handle. She had been through that before when their real parents passed away. But Ruki… Ruki was innocent. It would break his heart to be thrown to the streets after he had experienced such joy in the Palace.

She bit her lips. Perhaps they should leave? It would be a little easier on Ruki that way. Them leaving…he wouldn't feel so rejected that way right?

But their Papa and Daddy…They have been so good to them. If they left, it would be like they didn't appreciate all that they did for them.

Besides, where would they go?

“Nee-chan, I want to see Mother and Father.”

Ami looked at Ruki’s tear-stricken face and knew that her brother was right. That was where they should go. They both needed to see their parents.

“Let's go see Mother and Father then.” She clasped her brother's hand tightly and looked at his eyes solemnly. “Together.”

---------------------------------------------------------

“Jin, wake up.” When shaking the King didn't work, Kazuya huffed and resorted to dirty tactics.

JIN AKANISHI, WAKE UP!!!

“W-what?” Jin bolted awake when his dreams of flying strawberries and dancing jasmines were interrupted by Kazuya's (admittedly beautiful) face yelling about waking up. “What is it, love?”

“The children aren't here.” Kazuya frowned. He had been surprised to find the two children gone when he woke up. “It's still early. They shouldn't even have been up yet.”

“Relax, love. Children these days are so energetic. They must have woken up early to play.”

“I guess.” But still Kazuya couldn't shake the worry. He felt like something was wrong. “But I need to see them, just in case.”

“Alright, Kazu.” Jin indulged. He made it a point not to argue with Kazuya while the man was pregnant. That could only result in two ways anyway - Kazuya crying or throwing Jin strong punches. Either is not good for both Kazuya and the baby considering the seal was already broken and they could feel each other’s pain again.

They went to the children's room and were surprised to find the children's clothes in disorder, like someone had haphazardly taken them out of the trunks and changed his mind half-way.

On top of Ami's bed, Jin found a note. He gasped.

“What's written Jin?”

Jin raised the note out of Kazuya's reach. “Um, you should sit down first, love.”

“Jin! What. Does. The. Note. Say?!”

Jin sighed and reluctantly showed Kazuya the letter.

“We're sorry Papa and Daddy. We'll love you forever. - Ami and Ruki.”

-----------------------

To be continued…

-----------------------

Technically, Ami should be the reasonable one. But well she's a barely 12 year old girl who had seen and suffered enough in the real world. It's enough to make her jaded and think that if something is too good to be true, it's probably not meant to last. And she loves her brother more than anything else. She'll do anything for him.

I know this fic is almost ending but I thought it would be good to add one last drama, you know? Thus, the issue about Ruki and Ami.

A shout-out for everyone who are still supporting this fic. You guys are AWESOME!
