Chapter 8: A Painting and A Confession

The Prince woke up with a grin on his face. It's been almost permanent on his face since Kazuya agreed to stay in the Palace.

He quickly got up and rang for his chamber maids to help him get ready. When he finished taking a bath and donning new garments, he hurriedly walked to Kazuya's room.

He had wanted him to be in the same room as him but the Queen had insisted that they stay in separate rooms. Something about Kazuya's virtue or something like that.

Sheesh, it's not like I would jump the man first chance I get.

Although of course, if Jin would be honest with himself, having Kazuya in the same room as him would be too much of a temptation to resist.

He knocked but there was no answer so he slowly opened the door.

Kazuya was sleeping like a baby. It was like watching an angel on earth.

Jin's grin got wider as he walked towards the bed and sat on it.

He brushed strands of Kazuya's hair that fell on the man's face.

Jin felt a warm feeling in his chest when Kazuya unconsciously nuzzled his hand.

"Oh you are just too adorable!" He attacked the sleeping man with a bear hug.

He was aware that he was acting like a puppy but who cares? It was Kazuya so it was okay to act like that.

Kazuya jolted awake. His annoyed eyes landed on Jin. "Would you mind getting off me, Jin?"

"Good morning Kazu! Are you feeling fine?"

"Yes Jin, I'm okay. I've been telling that to you for a week now."

He pouted. "Just making sure."

"I know, you big baby. Now get off me so I could take a bath and change."

"You smell wonderful Kazu. And no one here hardly cares if you don't change your clothes," he insisted.

"I care," Kazuya retorted and pushed Jin off of him.

He reluctantly left Kazuya's bed and walked to the door. "Alright. But don't take too long, I'll miss you."

Kazuya's laugh reached him even outside the room.

That afternoon, Jin was tending to Eragon when he saw Kazuya walking to him.

He haven't seen the man since breakfast because his father had talked to him about his coming coronation as the next King. And when his father talks, you should expect it to be a very long conversation.

Kazuya had been busy with catching up with Yamapi, too. Not that he minded. Once he got over his initial jealousy towards him, he found out that Kazuya's friend was actually admirable. He was grateful to Yamapi for taking care of Kazuya so he was fine with Kazuya spending time with him.

Of course, the guards he secretly ordered to watch the two also helped ease his anxiety.

He watched as Kazuya made his way to him, the afternoon sun rays bathing him in a gold hue. He was stunning.

"He's perfect, isn't he Eragon?" he said to his horse in pure amazement, his eyes still on Kazuya.

Kazuya's blush gave away the fact that he had heard Jin.

Eragon neighed as if in agreement to Jin's statement and trotted to Kazuya.

"Aren't you a darling?" Kazuya smiled while petting Eragon.

Jin smiled as well. "Kazu, there's something I want to show you. Would you come with me?"

He breathe a sigh of relief when Kazuya nodded.

"Come along then." He led the way back inside the palace, towards the upper floors.

They walked in companionable silence until they stopped in front of a room with an intricately decorated door.

Jin pushed the door open.

"This is my haven. This is where I am most peaceful."

Easels, brushes and paints can be seen everywhere in the spacious room. But what amazed Kazuya was the paintings around- some finished, some not yet done. There was a broad range of subject in those- horses galloping, townspeople celebrating in a festival, the King and Queen...

"You painted all these?" There was awe in Kazuya's voice.

"Yes, it's my past time. It gives me great pleasure when I am able capture moments and immortalize them through my paintings. After all, every event, every expression is unique. Take this for example." Jin touched the top of a painting. It was of a little girl laughing at something. "This is Lisa, one of the maid's younger sister. I know for a fact that Lisa will laugh again. But she won't laugh like this again, no, not quite like this. Maybe her eyes would shine more or perhaps her dimple won't be as defined, I don't know. But it will definitely be different."

Kazuya looked at Jin, really look at him. And for the first time, he realized why he had been so drawn to the Prince from the very beginning. Perhaps Kazuya had known it all along but today, it became very clear that beneath the Prince's playful and carefree facade lies a man of deep character. He might come off as dull at first but he was actually quite intelligent. No, not just intelligent, he was wise.

The Prince must have misinterpreted his silence because he hurriedly said, "Oh I'm sorry, I'm boring you, am I not?"

"No, no. It's an interesting point of view actually. Honestly, I haven't thought like that before. These paintings...I realized there are much to them than just their superficial value."

Just like you. Of course, Kazuya kept that thought to himself.

He roamed his eyes around when he became uncomfortable with Jin's inquisitive gaze. That was when one particular painting near the window caught his eyes. Unlike the others that were displayed, that one was covered with a white sheet. "Why is that one covered?"

Jin turned to the covered painting. "Oh. That is what I've been meaning to show you. It's something I made when I was ill."

Jin fidgeted nervously and Kazuya stared at him, confused.

"Can I see it now?"

"Oh of course, of course." Jin ushered him towards the painting. He took a deep breath before slowing removing the white sheet.

When the sheet fell on the floor, Kazuya felt like his jaw came with it.

There, in the canvas, was him. But it wasn't quite him at the same time. This image of him was more...just more. The way his eyes shine, the almost surreal tint of his hair, the slight parting of his lips...It was clear that the painter had strong feelings for him. It showed in the way he had painted him- almost in a revering way.

And that painter was beside him now, hope and anxiousness in his eyes.

"You...really love me? You weren't messing with me when you told me you love me. You really love me." He couldn't quite believe it.

Jin pouted. "I've been saying that to you anytime I get and you still didn't believe me?"

"I'm sorry. It's just that it seemed hard to believe that a Prince like you, a heir to the the throne at that, would love me."

"You don't see yourself the way I do," Jin said smiling.

"Obviously." Kazuya said glancing at the portrait of himself. "Thank you for sharing this with me," He placed his hands atop Jin's.

"No. Thank you. Thank you for being here. I can't always be strong. But at least with you here, I won't be alone."

"Jin, you're a wonderful person. The kingdom is lucky to have a Prince like you." Kazuya cradled Jin's face in between his hands. "As am I. I'm lucky to have you as well. I love you Jin."

Jin stared at Kazuya surprised. "Y-you do?"

He had always been the one who expressed his love for Kazuya. He had been affectionate towards him and vocal of what he feels. And although Kazuya never complained or pushed him away, he had never initiated anything between them either. Kazuya cared for him, yes. But these past few days, he was starting to think that Kazuya felt no more than friendship towards him. Maybe he wasn't even comfortable with a guy confessing his love for him and is simply tolerating him because he was the prince.

The doubt must be clear in his eyes because Kazuya's gentle caress felt like an assurance.

"I do love you Jin. Please don't doubt that." Kazuya leaned up to him and pressed their lips together.

Jin's heart had finally come home.

I hope everyone's satisfied with this chapter... I had a hard time incorporating the painting here because honestly, originally I wasn't going to pay much attention on it but since a lot of you are curious about it, I revised this chapter. ^^
