Chapter 1: The Sickness and The Cure
"I am sorry, your Majesty but there is nothing else we can do," the royal doctor said sadly.
"Heavens! My poor son!" the Queen cried, upset.
A month ago, Prince Jin started to become sick of an unknown disease.
The royal doctors did not know what it was. The symptoms were confusing as well. It varied - and became worst - each day.
The first few days, the Prince only had fever and coughing fits and occasional tiredness. No one thought it was a cause for alarm so they had given him standard medicine.
However, the fever did not stop and added to it, were hourly occurrence of dizziness and muscle ache. Eventually, the Prince could no longer keep on his feet for more than a few seconds so he had to be bedridden. Some food made him vomit terribly and the more recent symptom was purging of blood. He was also already complaining of internal pain, like his insides were being stabbed repeatedly.
The doctors were at loss. None of them had ever encountered an illness like this. They had tried to alleviate at least the pain the Prince was feeling but nothing seems to work.
Medicine only made Prince Jin complain of its bitter taste. Rest was not applicable since it was the only thing that the Prince seemed to be doing these days and yet everytime, he wakes up more tired. It was really peculiar.
The staff in the palace were starting to weave rumors that the Prince was cursed.
"Maybe he did something to upset the Gods," they gossiped.
But those who knew the Prince personally knew that the Prince was not bad or evil. He may be a tad too playful but he was kind and friendly and most definitely was not a snob. He treats everyone on equal grounds.
The King desperately searched for the best doctor in the kingdom and when he found him, he brought him to his son. But here that doctor was, telling him nothing could be done.
"Are you telling me I should just let the boy die?!" The King bellowed.
"This is no ordinary sickness that have befallen our dear Prince." The doctor knelt down in fear. "In my years as a doctor, I have never encountered a sickness so unpredictable. Only a miracle will save Prince Jin," he tried to explain although he was already shaking. He knew the consequences should he upset the King.
Prince Jin would be turning 21 in only a month where he would take the place of his father as King. If the Prince died, there would be no one to ascend the throne and it would be a good enough reason for the King to order the doctor's dismissal as a doctor and even his death.
"You are the best doctor in the whole Kingdom, are you not? Surely, your vast knowledge can help my child?" The Queen asked, frustration clear in her voice.
"The Queen is talking to you. Do you not hear her?" The King demanded.
Before the trembling doctor could answer, a royal guard interrupted. "Sire, a traveler wishes to speak to you."
"A traveler? He expects to come and see the King as he pleases?! Turn him away!"
"But Sire," The guard looked at the King, unsure. "The traveler claims to know a cure to the Prince's illness."
The King's eyes were filled with hope. "Bring him in immediately!" His sharp eyes turned to the doctor. "Nothing short of a miracle you say? Then why does a mere traveler know the cure?"
The doctor opened his mouth to defend himself but the King waved away his attempts.
"Leave now before I become more angry with you!"
The doctor bowed and hurriedly left. Soon after, the traveler was ushered in.
"You can cure the Prince?" The King asked without preamble once the traveler had knelt down as respect to the King and Queen. It was after all, the most important question.
"Oh no, I can't." At the King's impatient sigh, the traveler quickly added, "But I know something that can."
"Go on!" The King said with renewed hope.
"A kiss of life, your Highness, can cure your son."
"Kiss of life? What is that?"
"It is something that only the Whisperers can give. A Whisperer will kiss a human and that human will be cured of all his illness if the Whisperer so wishes it."
"Whisperers? But they are no longer existing, right my dear King?" the Queen asked, confused
"Yes, they're no longer existing. The law had made sure that they all be exterminated." The King confirmed before turning his furious gaze to the traveler. "How dare you waste our time on this false information. Guards!"
The guards have started to advance to the traveler but there was no panic or fear on his face as he said, "You can choose not to listen to me but if you do, I can prove to you that I am telling the truth both on the existence of Whisperers and on the kiss of life."
The King, made desperate by the Prince's condition, decided to listen to what the man had to say. "Release him!" When the traveler was once again free, the King asked, "What proof do you have?"
"My friend is a Whisperer."
The Queen gasped. "Those vile creatures are your friends?!"
The traveler's eyes hardened. "Only one of them is and Kazuya is hardly a 'vile creature', your Highness."
Kazuya? The Queen thought. The name was strangely familiar.
"So this Kazuya is a Whisperer and had told you of the kiss of life?" The King questioned.
"Yes. Kazuya can cure your son."
"Very well. Where is this Kazuya?"
"Held captive by Lord Ryo, your Highness, and is supposed to be killed this afternoon."
"Then we shall go to Ryo's estate at once! Guard, prepare the carriage!"
"My King! Must you go there personally? It could be dangerous," the Queen worried.
"This is for our Prince, my Queen. I must go."
"Then let me come with you."
"No. You should stay by the Prince's side."
"Very well. If that is what the King wishes," the Queen obediently said.
"Now then, lad what is your name?" The King asked the traveler.
"Yamashita Tomohisa, your Highness."
"Yamashita, if your friend fails to cure Prince Jin, then I would have to order both your deaths," the King said almost apologetically.
Contrary to what most believe, he really didn't like ordering people's death because unlike his earlier ancestors, he wasn't cruel or bloodthirsty. But he didn't want his citizens to think that they could get away with everything they do. Even so, he keeps the death sentence as a last resort.
"I understand, my King. But your Highness, if Kazuya is able to cure the Prince, could you promise me one thing?" Yamashita asked.
"Anything. What do you like? Riches? Land? Perhaps a title? I could make you a Lord."
"Only the safety of my friend, your Highness. If Kazuya can be spared from the law about Whisperers then that is enough for me," he said sincerly.
Kazuya was precious to Yamashita, a family more than a friend.
The King looked at the young boy and said solemnly, "I give you my word that if Prince Jin is cured, your friend can live freely with my people and I will make sure that she will be safe."
She? Yamashita thought confused. And then his eyes widened when he realized something. "Your Highness-"
But the King did not notice him because at that moment, it was announced that the carriage was ready.
"Let's go then Yamashita and retrieve your friend," the King said.
"Your Highness, there's something I have to tell you about Kazuya," Yamashita said.
The King glared at him. "Were you lying about the cure?"
Yamashita was taken aback. "Of course not, your Highness!"
"Then I'm sure whatever you have to say can wait." The King started to walk away, clearly expecting Yamashita to follow.
"But your Highness-"
"If you don't quiet down and follow me, we might not make it in time before Ryo kills your friend."
That effectively silenced Yamashita as he followed the King to the carriage.
Oh well, I guess it doesn't make much of a difference when the King sees that Kazuya is in fact a male.
