The ball begins

Millicent twirled the fake tail of her cat costume around in a circle, waiting for Percy Weasley to step out of his private bathroom. She'd allowed him to pick his own costume, but made sure he would spend the entire evening occupied with various other Ministry personnel ( Read more... )

Taking one last drag from his cigarette, Theo tossed it into a nearby potted plant before stepping into the main ball room to search for Millie. They had shown each other their glamours ahead of time so they would know each other, but he didn't have a clue what costume she was wearing. Theo himself was dressed all in black, with a long cape and some sort of large silver wand on his belt. The man in the Muggle costume shop said it would be very popular. Apparently it was from some famous Muggle movie which Theo had no desire to see. It also came with a helmet, which he not so politely declined to purchase ( ... )

"Excuse me, Minister," she said to Percy, feeling confident in leaving him to greet the Ministry employees while she had a word with "Merrick Wyatt."

"Merrick," she said, giving him a kiss on each cheek. "You look amazing, darling. I'm glad you could make it this evening."

She pulled him behind one of the potted plants and pulled him close. "Is everything in order for this evening's event?"

Theo looked around a little to make sure anyone who happened to be there already wasn't watching them. Once he was sure they weren't being watched, he turned back to face "Bethany."

"Every thing's set," he told her, taking one glove off and reaching up to cup her face. "You look bloody brilliant." Then he leaned in and captured her lips in a kiss.

"Good," she replied against his lips, pressing her body against his. "As long as everyone enjoys themselves tonight, there will be no reason we can't pull this off."

Harry entered with Ginny on his arm, trying not to look like he was aiming for the shadows. "I'm going to find whoever's idea this was and hex their balls off," he growled in Ginny's ear.

"So you're going to walk up to Percy and do that?" she asked, making a face at him. "Good luck with that."

"How's my dress?" she asked, adjusting the headdress of her costume. "I feel completely ridiculous."

"You look gorgeous, Gin, as always," he assured her, resisted the urge to tug on his tights. "And Percy wasn't behind this. Oh, he'd have backed it once someone explained it was good for PR, but can you imagine Percy decided that a Halloween Social Function was just the perfect way to spend an evening? Get real."

"Then who do you suppose it was then?" she asked, linking her arm through his as they walked further into the lobby. "Percy doesn't really see very many people these days. You've got to catch him outside work to even think about talking to him. And though his secretary seems nice, I think she's really got issues with controlling his schedule."

Clad in a flouncy can-can dancer costume, Pansy entered the ball on Draco's arm. A photographer snapped their picture, and she batted her eyelashes in his direction.

"Do you see champagne anywhere?" she asked Draco, as she smiled obligingly at her co-workers.

Draco was having a very hard time keeping his face expressionless like a proper gentleman, to match his outfit. He had dressed up as a dandy, complete with overlarge bow tie and watch chain, but he was fairly sure that a man dressed like this was not supposed to be snickering. Pansy's antics made it nearly impossible not to, though.

"I will escort you to the champagne on one condition," he said, raising an authoritative finger. "That if you don't end up coming home with me, you will not wake me up."

"Yes sir," Pansy rolled her eyes, but she couldn't fight back a smile. "Do let me know if you see anyone worth going home with, will you?" she asked, as she scanned the crowd. "Is it just me, or does Weasley look awfully good tonight?" she added, spying Ron Weasley.

"Do not say that in my presence ever again," Draco said sternly, looking absolutely horrified. "That is disgusting. No champagne for you, your eyesight will only get worse."

As subtly as she could manage, Pansy followed Draco's nod, to eye the masked bloke. Not bad, though she couldn't say for sure without seeing his face.

"I don't know why they gossip about us anymore," she whispered to him. "People think we've been dating since Hogwarts."

"Haven't we?" Draco asked, feigning surprise. He grinned and spun her around, showing her off. "Maybe we can win cutest couple."

Pansy laughed, "Maybe its because we're living in sin, and not even an engagement ring to speak of, you cad!"

"I have issues with commitment," Draco defended. "And for a while, I had monetary problems too, which are now thankfully solved." He started to smile. "You'll be getting that ring any day now."

Kevin entered the lobby of the Ministry with Lavender on his arm. He was quite glad she'd agreed to attend the dull function with him. He could imagine other more fascinating things to do on Halloween night, such as curling up in front of the fireplace with her to watch a movie.

"Did I tell you how smashing you look tonight?" he asked, tipping his pirate hat up so he could grin at her.

"You've said it a few times," Lavender grinned in return, smoothing out the apron of her sexy maid costume.

She was very happy he had asked her to come with him to the ball and agreed right away. She really did like him, and any excuse to spend time with him was a good one.

"Just so you know," he said, leaning down to whisper in her ear. "I don't dance. When I do, it's the worst show ever. Just ask Corner, he'll tell you."

Lavender pouted, then turned on him and brought his head down a little closer, her hand on his neck. "Dancing isn't about looking good. It's about feeling good. But if you don't want to. . . I'll just have to find someone else then won't I?"
