Rose didn't like anything about Tasha Ozera but when she'd followed the bond to find Lissa in Christian's room - and Christian and his aunt practicing offensive magic, she had to admit that was pretty damn cool. Moroi using magic as a weapon was forbidden. It was a punishable offense, and while a student playing with it might just get off being displined, Tasha actively teaching a minor was something totally different. Rose pondered turning her in for a moment just to see what would happen, but the part of her that didn't hate the older woman for putting the moves on Dimitri believed in what Tasha and Christian were doing. If the Moroi used their magic to help fight the Strigoi - well, it could change a lot of things around.
She watched the magic practice with Lissa, ideas spinning through her head about how a guardian and a Moroi could fight together. If they used their fire magic as a distraction - like Tasha was trying to teach Christian (even though he just wanted to burn things altogether), then a guardian could stake a Strigoi. They'd be able to take down a lot of them that way.
But no matter how cool the magic practice was, Rose was hardly able to keep from wishing all Tasha's pretty hair get burned off accidentally in a 'training accident' or responding bitchily when Tasha talked about Strigoi hunting 'someday'.
"What was that about?" Lissa asked as she, Christian, and Rose walked back down to the lobby.
"What was what?" Rose asked innocently, but it was hard to lie to a friend who knew you could read her mind and she looked away from Lissa's look.
"You being a bitch to Tasha," she replied, eyeing her friend.
"I wasn't that much of a bitch," Rose replied, not really caring so much.
Lissa stepped out of the way of a herd of Moroi children from the school. "You were rude!"
Rose rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest. "Look, I'm just grumpy, got it? And I don't have to be polite all the time. I'm not like you." The words were barely out before Rose couldn't believe what she'd just said to Lissa and winced at Lissa's look of astonishment. Christian looked like he was on the verge of snapping back when Rose saw Mason (still walking with a slight limp) with relief. "Hey there, Hop-Along," she said, slipping her hand into his.
"Is it true your suicidal moves finally caught up with you?" Christian asked Mason, putting his anger at Rose to the side.
"Is it true you were hanging out with Adrian Ivashkov last night?" Mason asked Rose instead of responding.
"I - what?" Rose asked, totally shocked. First of all, how did he know, and second - had she mentioned the Adrian at Fandom to Lissa? She really didn't want to get into this now. Really, really, really.
"I heard you guys got drunk last night," he said, glowering a little.
It was Lissa's turn to be startled. "You did?"
"No! Of course not," Rose defended herself. "I barely know him."
For some versions of barely that included having actually guarded him before and accompanied him on five - no, four dates. The one with Dimitri so didn't count.
"But you do know him," Mason said.
She was never ever telling them about the Adrian at Fandom. "Barely. What the fuck?"
"He's got a bad reputation," Lissa warned, looking worried.
"He goes through a lot of girls," Christian said. Or course he had to put his two cents in.
"God, guys, lay off!" Rose protested. "I talked to the guy for like five minutes, and it was only because he was standing in my way." She knew Lissa thought something wasn't quite right with the explanation, but she figured Lissa, of all people, would trust her. "Where are you getting all of this?" Oh. Duh. "Mia." At Mason's look of slight embarrassment, Rose pushed forward. "Since when do you talk to her? Since when do you believe her? You know she lies half the time."
"Yeah, but there's usually some truth to the lies," Mason replied. "And you did talk to him."
"Yeah, talk," Rose repeated. "That's all." She liked Mason a lot, but the whole not believing her thing made him a little less cute for the moment. Unless he really did have a thing for her so maybe was more jealous? Still, not cool. It was surprisingly Christian who changed the subject for the better.
"No skiing today, huh?" he asked Mason, pointing at the ankle.
Mason glared indignantly. "This isn't going to slow me down! We're still going - right?" he asked, checking with Rose.
Rose nodded and looked over to Adrian and Lissa. "You guys coming?"
"Can't," Lissa replied. "We have to go to a big lunch hosted by the Contas."
"Ugh, you have to go," Christian complained. But it wasn't like he wasn't going to end up doing what Lissa wanted anyway and it wasn't long before Rose and Mason escaped out to the slopes.
"Skiing sounds better and better, huh?" Mason teased, tugging Rose along. "Less of a dress code..."
Rose didn't see Lissa the rest of the day - too many political and social events for the last of the Dragomirs, and for once Rose didn't mind. She'd have to deal with enough of that political stuff when she was officially Lissa's guardian. For now, she was content to enjoy skiing the easy runs out of respect for Mason's injury and get in a snowball fight with her class of novices - all of whom she'd known at St. Vladimirs but many who'd changed in the almost three years since she'd actually attended the school.
It wasn't until evening that she and Mason were back inside and found some privacy. Mason's kisses weren't anything like Dimitri's. They were pleasant and fun, but nothing earth-shattering or intensely passionate. Which hadn't ever stopped her before really, and after sending Mason away eventually, she fell asleep in a good mood, refusing to worry about if Mason thought this meant they were a couple now or what.
But when she slept, she dreamt of Adrian Ivashkov.
