Day 5: Moroi Ski Resort, Idaho | Friday Morning FH-Time
There had been another attack. When Dimitri had reported to the makeshift guardian headquarters in Janine Hathaway's room, he'd learned the terrible news that it was a massacre identical to what had happened at the Badica compound. This time, at the Drozdovs' California home, eight Moroi and their five guardians had been slaughtered. But the worst of it - three of the Moroi were missing, assumed turned or stolen away for future Strigoi feeding.
Naturally, while the guardians gathered to sort out what had occurred and how to defend against ward-breaking, Rose and Lissa showed up, sneaking into the middle of things. Janine seemed to share Dimitri's view that there was no point keeping information from them and shared the list of victims. Dimitri overheard from them that another student's mother had been killed in the attack but couldn't stand to look at Rose long enough to ask after specifics. Besides, Dimitri was busy assisting Janine in talking down the guardians who were panicked at the thought of a group of seven Strigoi banding together to target and hunt down families of Moroi. The destruction of core beliefs was often difficult to accept, after all.
While the guardians planned, the Royal Moroi gathered to panic overthink and talk about how to save their own skins, potentially through use of untrained and unwilling dhampirs. From his uncomfortable seat in the back next to Rose and Mason, Dimitri had been pleased when Tasha Ozera had taken the podium and called for Moroi to get fight training for themselves and stop relying solely on the dhampirs to save them from the Strigoi threat. He hadn't, however, approved of her theatrics at the end, setting that Moroi's sweater on fire in a display of how they could use elemental magic in the fight.
When chaos over the fire broke out, Dimitri stood to leave, disgusted by the Moroi inability to get through anything rationally. He spared a glance to the novices beside him before he headed for the doors of the banquet hall. "You might as well leave. Nothing useful's going to happen now."
