Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Sylvie gave Nick a warm hug and they down. Nick gestured the waitress to take
their orders.
“So, here we are…” Nick started after the waitress had left.
“Your thinking how to say it gently, aren’t you?”
“Well, yeah…”
“Don’t bother. I have a pretty good idea why we’re here.”
“What do you think about it?”
“I’m thinking we should have done this a long time ago. We were good together
for some time, but that was long ago. It was over even before you moved to
Vegas.”
“You know I care about you.”
“I know. And I care about you. We just don’t fit together as a couple.” Sylvie
pulled a small envelope from her handbag. “You want this back?”
“Is that the ring?”
“Yeah.”
“Keep it. I don’t want it.”
“Okay.” Sylvie chuckled.
“So… What else is there going on in your life?”
“Really smooth transition, Nick. Actually, there’s something interesting
at work.”
“A new project?”
“A new co-worker.”
“I see. Are you two…?”
“Together? No. But maybe in the future. It’s a possibility.” Sylvie smiled.
“That’s good.”
“What about you?”
“It’s pretty funny… I didn’t have anyone new when I came to Texas.”
“You met somebody here?”
“Yep.”
“Is it serious?”
“It’s serious. And fast.”
“Sounds good. But have you noticed anything weird?”
“What do you mean `weird`?”
“We have called off our engagement and talked about our possible
relationships.”
“And?”
“And that waitress still hasn’t brought our coffees.”
------------------------------------------------------------
“Nicky, I’ve been waiting for you!” Magda practically tackled Nick, when
he returned to the ranch.
“Why?” Nick asked. “And what’s that noise?”
Just to underline his question, a long series of screams came from the dining
room. The door was locked, which instantly told Nick something was going
on.
“Magda, please!” Jimmy’s voice came thought the door. “Have mercy!”
“No. This is your punishment.” Magda responded and pulled Nick away
from the door.
“Punishment for what? I don’t even know what I did!” Jimmy’s voice turned
into a howl and Magda dragged Nick to the porch.
“What’s going on?”`
“My idiot husband is guiding our kids in their finger painting project. That’s
his punishment.”
“Punishment for what?”
“I need to ask you something. How much did you tell Greg about Sylvie?”
“Nothing. It never came up and I thought that-”
“That’s exactly what I thought…. And did you remember to tell him you
had to cancel today’s riding lesson?”
“Yeah, I left a message to Mrs. Davidson. I still don’t have Greg’s cell
phone number.”
“Well, apparently he didn’t get that message. He waited for you at the
stables, and when you didn’t show up, he came here to look for you. And
that idiot in there said that you had gone to town to meet your fiancé.”
“Oh crap…”
“And then he told him that you two have been engaged for two years,
but he hoped that you two finally get things working.”
“This is so bad…”
“No, it`s not, because it gets worse. I got back after he had left, and Jimmy
told me about it. I called Martha, and she said that Greg had left. He just
said that something came up, and he had to go back to New York.”
“Back to New York!”
“Yeah. Apparently he was going to catch the next flight.”
“I- I-I I gotta explain this to him.” Nick rushed to the yard and run to his truck.
“One more thing, Nicky!” Magda yelled.
“What?”
“I called the airlines. The next flight to New York doesn’t leave until nine in
the evening, so you have five hours to find him. He’ll be at the airport.”
“Thanks.” Nick yelled and slammed the car door shut.
