Chapter 1 Nick looked at the guy, and allowed the stream of babbling drown him for
a moment. Davidson’s guest was as tall as Nick, but more slightly built. His
hair was made up into oddly angled, blond spikes, but it wasn’t the most eye
catching feature of his face. He had rich brown eyes that kept moving from
charming to mischievous, and from thoughtful to loony. Nick had plenty of
time to make observations, the guy had been talking non-stop for the last
five minutes.
“Are you even listening? Nicky?”
“Yeah… But I still don’t have any idea of what your talking about.”
“I was saying that me and Roco have some things in common.” He patted the
horse, who was patiently waiting for her rider. “We both like to show off our
teeth.”
“And it took you five minutes to tell me that?”
“I wanted t be thorough!”
“Right… Are you gonna actually get on a horse today?”
----------------------------------------
About an hour later the riding lesson was over and Nick had decided that constant
babbling wasn’t that bad after all. He helped Greg down from the saddle and lead
Roco back to the stable.
“That wasn’t bad for a first timer. You didn’t even fall down.”
“Yeah, but I’m not gonna sit normally for a long time. You’re a nice guy, but I met
you an hour ago and my ass is already hurting.” Greg paused to think about it.
“Wow… that sounded dirtier than I thought. Truthful, but dirty.”
“Guess so…” Nick chuckled. “You want to come back to the house for coffee?
My mom always has some around, from morning all the way until evening.”
“I like her already.” Greg grinned.
----------------------------------------
“So, my mom said you work in the N.Y. crime lab.” Nick said and sat down to
the swing in the porch.
“Yeah. Two more months and I’m out of there.”
“Your leaving?”
“They cut down budgets, and they had to get rid of some of the techs. I was the
last to come, so I’m the first to go.”
“What are you gonna do after that?”
“I got some offers, I’ll be fine. San Francisco and Las Vegas already approached
me. I’m hot stuff, you know.”
“Vegas? I work there.”
“Oh, yeah…” a wide smile appeared on Greg’s face. “I remember Brian’s mom
said something like that. How is it?”
“Lab or Vegas?”
“Both.”
“Lab’s great. One of the best in the country. And Vegas is…well, it`s Vegas.
It takes a while to get used to it.”
“How long have you been there?”
“About eight months.”
“Why did you go there?”
Nick shrugged. “There was no positions available in Dallas.”
“And in Vegas your dad is not a judge…”
“There was that, too.”
----------------------------------------
“So, how was it?” Jimmy asked.
“How was what?”
“Riding lesson. Did he fall off?”
“No, he didn’t, and you don’t need to sound so eager. You weren’t exactly
ready for rodeo, when you first got on a horse.”
“When I first got on a horse, you weren’t even born.”
“Mom still has the pictures. You were crying and screaming so much your
whole head was bright red.”
“Are you boys talking about Jimmy’s first horse ride?” Jillian asked and marched
past them to the kitchen.
“Yep.” Nick confirmed.
“I remember that day.” Jillian came back with a timer, set it to ring in ten
minutes and sat down next to the boys. “You were an adorable child, but
sometimes I wished I could have put a gag on you.”
“Mom!” Jimmy exclaimed.
“I said it with love. You were always he loudest one out of seven kids.”
“I wasn’t.”
“Don’t argue with your mama.” Jillian said, and turned to face Nick. “How did
you get on with… I cant remember his name…”
“Greg. And he was a nice guy.”
“Good. There isn’t that much company for you. Did he like riding?”
“I think he did. We’re going to meet again tomorrow.”
“But remember to be careful with him. Beginners can get careless, and hurt
themselves.”
“I’ll be careful. And if he falls down, we can always comfort him with those
pictures of Jimmy.”
----------------------------------------
Greg twisted his torso to get a better look at his rear end.
“I think it’s getting used to the saddle. It doesn’t hurt as much as it did
yesterday.”
“It’s normal in the beginning, but I’ve never heard anyone talk so much about
his own ass.”
Greg grinned. “Admit it. My butt is a true wonder of nature.”
“Don’t know about that, but your ego definitely is.”
“Okay, we’ll agree that both of them are fantastic. See you tomorrow?”
“Yep.”
Greg turned around and bounced to the direction of Davidson’s truck. Nick’s
eyes wandered down to the much talked about body part and he smirked.
Greg’s estimate of his own assets seemed to be pretty accurate.
