“You gotta be kidding!” Greg exclaimed. “Since when is there rain in Texas?”
“Greg, there’s rain everywhere, didn’t you know that?” Nick laughed.
“Yeah, but this is Texas! Tumbleweed and dry sand and hot sun! Nobody told
me there’s rainstorms in Texas.”

“Don’t worry, they go away pretty quickly.” Nick guided Greg to the nearby barn
and closed the doors behind them. “We can wait here till it’s over.”

Nick headed to the back of the barn, where his family had gathered all the stuff
that they didn’t want to throw away, but didn’t really want to keep either. Finally
he found an old wooden wardrobe and pulled out some well worn blankets.
When he came back Greg was still standing in the same place looking around.

“So this is… barn.”
“Yes.”
“And here your people store hay.”
“Yes. Why do you look like that?”
“It’s my first time in one of these. I’m from San Francisco. If you wanna know
something about surfing, I’m your guy. But anything to do with barns or hay…
I do know the term `Roll in the Hay`, but that’s about it.”

“Well, it’s a start.” Nick grinned. “You wanna take off your clothes?”
“You don’t waste any time, do you?” Greg sounded immensely pleased.
“I meant that you could take off your wet clothes, and we could hang them
up to dry. I found some blankets from the back.”

“My vision was definitely more fun, but I can adapt.” Greg started pulling off his
clothes and Nick did the same. “Are you sure this isn’t some weird plan to get
me naked?”

“According to my experience, I don’t need plans to get you naked.”
“That’s true.” Greg shed off the last piece of clothing and wrapped himself up in
a large blanket. Nick set their clothes to dry and sat down next to him on a pile
of hay.

“What do you think so far?”
Greg giggled. “You mean the barn or the hay? The barn is… cozy, actually.”
“Yeah. When we were kids we used to come here for a sleepovers. Mom was
glad that we were somewhere close, and we thought it was really exciting.”
“Sounds like fun. But your forgetting the key factor in all forms of cognitive
learning.”

“What?”
“All the new things should be somehow associated to already existing
base of knowledge.”

Nick chuckled. “And how am I gonna do that?”
Greg pressed him to lay in the hay pile on his back and smirked. “Let’s start
with that `roll in the hay` thing, and then see where we end up.”

-------------------------------------------

Nick groaned and tried to open his eyes. He could still hear the rain outside.
He was wrapped tightly inside a warm blanket, and Greg’s naked, warm body
was pressing firmly against him.

“Greg? Are you awake?”
“No…” Greg groaned and buried his face to Nick’s chest.
“No hurry, the rain’s not gonna stop anytime soon.”
“Good.”
“Greg…”
“Yeah?”
“When are you going back to New York?”
“Two weeks from tomorrow. You?”
“A week from now. What about…”

“What?”
“What do we do when we go back?”
Greg lifted his head and looked Nick in the eye. “I was planning to continue
this as well as we can and see how it goes.”
Nick let out a relieved chuckle. “That’s good. That’s what I was thinking.
Have you made up your mind about what your gonna do about your job?
Are you going to take the job in Vegas?”

“I’m… seriously considering it.”

-------------------------------------------

Nick snapped his cell phone open pressed it against his ear.
“Brown.”
“Warrick? You tried to call me?”
“Yeah, and all I got was voice mail. What have you’ve been doing all week?”
“I…I`ll tell you when I get back. Why did you try to reach me?”
“I was trying to call about the night after your vacation. Your supposed to
have that night off, right?”
“Yeah. Why?”

“Robinson wanted to switch with you. He has his daughters girl scout
whatever the morning after that. What do I tell him?”
“I don’t mind, I can take his shift.”
“Your in a good mood. I assume things went well.”
“Yep.”
“Are you and Silvia getting back together?”
“Sylvie. And no, we’re not getting back together.”
“Okay, so what have you been doing there?”

“Well…” Nick paused for a minute to think how much he should reveal.
“You met somebody didn’t you?”
“How did you know?”
“You are too easy to read. Who is she?”
“Just.. somebody.”
“On a scale from one to ten.”

“Nine.” Nick’s mind wandered back to their encounter in the barn.
“And a half.”

“Are you gonna bring her to Vegas with you?”
“We’re… negotiating about it. By the way…”
“What?”
“Have you heard about the tech position in the lab?”
“You mean when Peterson retires? Yeah, heard about it today.”
“What did you hear about it?”
“That they’ve filled the position. Why do you wanna know?”
“I was just thinking.”
“Don’t do too much of that, your on vacation. I need to go, we’ll talk when
you get back.”

“Okay. And Warrick…” Nick paused and tried to calm down. “He’s not a she.”
“What do you-” Then realization hit. “Oh. You mean that. Okay.”
“Okay? That’s it?”

“What did you think I would say? I grow up in Vegas, Nick! The Sin City,
where you can run into midget showgirls, cross dressing judges and
gambling cult leaders. You going after dudes is hardly a bleep on the
radar.”

Nick chuckled. “Sounds like a fascinating place. See you when I’m back.”
He ended the call and chose another number from his cell phone. After
a minute the recipient answered.

“Nicky?”
“Sylvie, hi. Are you back in Dallas?”
“Just got back an hour ago. I’m unpacking my things. How are you?”
“Good. You?”
“I’m good. Very good, actually.”
“It’s nice to hear that.”
“So this is it.”
“This is what?”

“This is the point where we talk things through. Can you come to
Dallas tomorrow?”
“Yeah, what time?”
“How bout two? Is that good?”
“I’ll arrange it. Where do you want to meet?”
“Remember that café close to my office?”
“I remember. I’ll be there.”
“And Nicky…”
“Yeah?”

“It probably won’t be a pleasant talk, but it`ll be nice to see you.
It`s been a while.”
