  • [Review] Between the World and Me - Ta-Nehisi Coates

    fanw Apr 19, 2016 21:49

This book is a conversation sparked by the events that have produced the Black Lives Matter movement. Scratch that, this is a conversation which welled up after a lifetime of living under the singular threat of being a black man. I must say that I have never spent much time trying to see myself in those particular shoes. His opening statement where ( Read more... )

  • [Almost] Last Shift

    fanw Mar 28, 2016 20:38

Today was my last shift as attending. As attending, I led a team of three residents, three med students and a pharmacist in the care of up to 16 patients in the hospital. We cared for those with the flu, suppurating wounds, fractures, bacteria in the blood, cirrhosis, blood pressure in the 200s, ans seizures from alcohol withdrawal. All in a days ( Read more... )

  • [Review] The Rosie Project - Graeme Simsion

    fanw Feb 26, 2016 21:42

With the end of February near, I picked up a quick book to meet my book-a-month goal.

The Rosie Project is a novel written in such a way as to make a perfect odd couple romantic comedy. In fact, the movie rights have already been snatched up and are limited only by Jennifer Lawrence's leaving the project. In any case, the basic gyst is that the ( Read more... )

    fanw Feb 22, 2016 21:59

It has been a very busy winter what with job search, apartment search, the continuous series of colds, and occasional moonlighting shifts to prevent insolvency. I turn around and sure enough my girls are older.

Ten months M is growing a pace. She crawls, but mostly wriggles to where she wants to be, then sits and pulls up as far as she can to get ( Read more... )

  • [Review] H is for Hawk -- Helen MacDonald

    fanw Feb 04, 2016 22:02

I would not have picked up this book were it not for a review. It said that this was a book that failed to fit into any convenient category, and indeed I agree. It is at once a bereavement memoir, a history of falconry, and the story of T.H. White, the novelist you know as the author of The Once and Future KingAt the outset of the book, the author' ( Read more... )

  • Syphilis and Rocky-Mountain Spotted Fever

    fanw Feb 01, 2016 21:03

Five days ago I felt wiped. I figured it was the no sleep for three days while comforting M who was sick and inconsolable. Then two days later my feet ached like I'd walked a mountain, and my hands itched like... wait, what? I was in such discomfort my husband went out in the middle of the night to get benadryl. Then the spots came out ( Read more... )
