I've found myself drifting from Livejournal and now I have several posts to write...
Reviews of three books (Fool, When Breath Becomes Air, Far From the Tree)
A commentary on the new opiate legislation
General updates in life
As there are still many who rarely see me, I'll start with the updates...
In just eight days, I'll be done with work. I get essentially a six week break before the new job, so we'll be doing some traveling and hopefully reconnecting (with each other, with friends, with Boston and environs) before I dive back in.
I am wrapping up work with mixed emotions. It's been a very supportive place and especially in this year I have made friendships I did not have before. It is easy when you're working hard and rushing home to the kids to lose all the social time necessary for solidifying friendships, but this year was a reprieve from the slog. The Chiefs are a group of remarkably motivated, high-performing individuals, and I've never before been part of such a functional team. They all have their gifts and I think I do want to stay in touch, more than I have with anyone since medical school. In this Chief year I've learned...
some medicine (updates on intermittent pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV, antidotes for novel anticoagulants),
-how to lecture (I've given many dozens of case presentations and several straight up lectures)
--how to interview someone else (and what makes one interviewee stand out from the next)
---how to negotiate in an interview (or more precisely between interviews)
----how to remediate those who can be remediated
-----how to fire those who can't
------how to get all the stakeholders involved
-------how to steer a committee to action
--------how to delegate
and probably a lot more than I'm aware of at the moment.
It will be good to have a break -- a longer break between jobs than I have had since 1999 -- but I will certainly miss this place.
