In-Game F.A.Q.

WHERE EXACTLY IS MY CHARACTER?

Your character is in the city of Splendor. It's quite an odd city, and a bit of an indecisive one at that. For more information on Splendor, visit the City page!

HOW DID MY CHARACTER ARRIVE?

Somehow, your character stumbled upon a music box. The music box is a tricky object, and always gets its way with the people it finds; something about it pulls at your curiosity so strongly that no one can resist turning the key and listening to the melody.

As the song places, an entrancing scene of mighty knights and beautiful princesses unfolds, blocking out all noise and distractions. Once the song is finished playing, the music box disappears, and your character will snap out of their trance to find themselves in the Golden Entranceway of Splendor City Hall.

WHAT IF MY CHARACTER IS CANONLY DEAD OR UNCONSCIOUS AT THEIR CANON POINT?

Instead of physically finding the music box, the character will have a dream-like experience of finding one, and the results will be the same as everyone else's.

DOES MY CHARACTER RECEIVE ANYTHING UPON ARRIVAL?

Yes! Your character will discover a unique key hanging from a chain that appeared around their neck, and an odd looking seal inside their pocket.

The key designates your character's housing assignment. Each key is different depending on the housing type it belongs to, and will have the assigned address engraved on it. For information on the different housing types, see the housing page.

WHAT DOES THE SEAL DO?

The seal is your character's way of communicating with others in Splendor. It has text, video, and voice functions. For more information on the shape, size, security, and use of the seal, please see the seal page.

CAN I CHANGE MY CHARACTER'S HOUSING ASSIGNMENT?

Your character is free to live wherever they wish, but they will only receive one key, and that is the key given upon arrival. The only way you can official swap roommates is if you trade a key with someone else. If you decide to switch, please leave a comment at the housing page so the mods can change the housing list.

CAN MY CHARACTER BRING OBJECTS FROM HOME?

Your character will be in possession of any object they have on their person at the time of finding the music box. If there is a particular possession they want that they didn't have on them, there is a possibility to wish for it! It may not always work though, so your character may have to try multiple times.

IS THERE ANYBODY ELSE ALREADY IN THE CITY (ASIDE FROM CHARACTERS)?

Yes; the city has inhabitants that are simply called locals. These locals make sure that their city stays in tip top shape; they'll clean up messes, restock grocers, and ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible. For more on the Locals, check out the NPC page.

CAN I USE THE LOCALS IN THREADS?

Yep, you sure can! Keep in mind, however, that they don't talk, and they hardly acknowledge the existence of the newcomers.

WHY IS THERE A BAN ON VIOLENCE? HOW IS IT ENFORCED?

The locals have put out a ban on violence because of the nature of Splendor. Splendor is very sensitive to its' inhabitants, and every transformation reflects the vibe it gets from the people living there. If Splendor gets a violent feel from too much aggression or injuries, the next transformation could be dark or dangerous. The locals love their city very much and don't want to see it take a form like that on, so they do their best to prevent it.

WHAT COUNTS AS VIOLENT ACTIVITY?

The type of violence the locals do not like are actual fights, or any type of sparring that could result in serious injury, or lots of blood being spilled. They also will intervene or at least observe fights of malicious nature, as opposed to sparring. Since they really dislike interaction with outsiders, they are willing to turn a blind eye to some smaller skirmishes or sparring matches as long as they feel it won't escalate into something dangerous.

A good rule of thumb is if both parties involved can walk away from it without having to head to the hospital or get outside medical help, it would probably slide past the NPCs. It's always best to check with the mods first, though.

SHOULD I LET THE MODS KNOW ABOUT VIOLENT ACTIVITY?

It would be appreciated, yes! There are IC consequences for many acts of violence, and we want to encourage you to have fun with that as a plot point for your character if they get violent. Remember, NPCs are in tune with Splendor - they will know violence has taken place, no matter how sneaky the participants are about it.

Consequences may range from drastic to small things; it all depends on what you're willing to do with your character, and the nature of the violent activity. Please make sure to contact the mods about any violence taking place! We'll let you know if it qualifies for NPC prevention, or if it's something small enough that they'd look the other way. We won't stop you if you really want to finish a thread (though it is out of character for the locals to allow a large act of violence to go on freely), we just want to make sure the NPCs know what happened.

WILL MY CHARACTER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT MONEY AND BUYING NECESSITIES?

The only thing money-wise your character will have to worry about is buying food. You see, the locals can only restock the city so many times a week, so to ensure that everyone gets a fair amount of food, characters are allotted 100 points each week to buy food. This averages out to about 50 U.S. dollars worth of groceries per person a week. The points are kept track of by your house key, so make sure to keep it on you!

Aside from the groceries, everything else in the city is free.

WHAT'S THIS I HEAR ABOUT WISHES?

Splendor has a habit of granting the wishes of those who live there. It has taken the city awhile to get accustomed to so many people living in it, and the overload of wishes has prevented it from granting any right away. However, now that Splendor has become accustomed to more people, it has begun granting wishes of all kinds. Please see the wishes page and questions below for more information.

WHAT TYPES OF WISHES DOES SPLENDOR GRANT NORMALLY?

Outside of events, Splendor will grant smaller wishes instead of very large, life changing group wishes. The smaller wishes vary greatly; they can be anything from wishing for an umbrella to wishing the river was suddenly chicken noodle soup to wishing for a giant robot to call your own. It's all relative to the wisher.

WHAT WISHES CANNOT BE GRANTED?

Any wish for the direct harm of someone else is not allowed. In accordance with that, any wish that would break the no godmodding rule is also prohibited. You may have wishes that involve other characters, but you must have the other player's permission to do so.

Your character can wish for things that may end up causing harm to others in some way (for instance, a villain wishing for some sort of doomsday device), but there are the Locals to stand in your way should this happen.

DO WE NEED MODERATOR APPROVAL FOR WISHES?

Typically, no, you are free to be as creative as you would like with your character and their wishes. However, if you feel it is a big wish, such as a city-changing one, or one that in the end may cause harm to others, we would like you to run it by us beforehand, or at least let us know what you are planning. Sometimes we can even offer help or suggestions - NPC or just idea-wise - to help better your experience!

DOES SPLENDOR MESS UP/ALTER/ODDLY ANSWER WISHES?

Does it ever!

Splendor will often take things too literally or too metaphorically; it depends on what you as the player want. If you want it to answer oddly but aren't sure of how, just ask a mod and we can help you out. As for examples of how it may answer oddly, take the example of the music box given in the first event; people may have wished for the Music Box that brought them there, so Splendor gave them one that looked exactly like it. However, it lacked the power to actually send them home, and instead was just a plain music box. Other fun examples may be if your character wishes for say, a sandwich, they get a type of sandwich they don't want, or if they wish for a "very large" item, it may be much bigger than they intend. It's all up to you!

Character F.A.Q.

WHAT KIND OF CHARACTER CAN I PLAY?

You're allowed to play original characters and multifandom characters. Canon alternate reality or canon alternates* of characters are allowed alongside the originals. Animals, as long as they are sentient and can function on their own are also allowed. Fandom OCs** are not allowed, nor are AUs or real people.

*Canon alternates do not include characters that are simply from different parts of the same timeline (younger versions vs. older versions), unless the older versions hail from an alternate future or a future that no longer applies to the storyline of the younger character (such as the Reborn! series).

**Fandom OCs cover not just a character of your own creation put into a fandom universe, but also any fandom characters whose personalities and histories are 50% or more headcanon. If more of your character is headcanon (your own creative ideas of their character, not backed up by canon at all) than actual canon, they will be considered a fandom OC and not be accepted.

IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT FOR CHARACTERS?

Nope, you're free to apply as anyone from any age group!

CAN WE PLAY CHARACTERS WHO ARE DEAD IN CANON?

Yes, you may! There is a question in the In-Game FAQ above that explains how they arrive, as it is different than characters that are alive. Also, please make sure to state if you are taking them from post-death in your application.

MY CHARACTER HAS A POKEMON/FAMILIAR/PET/MINOR SIDEKICK. CAN THEY COME WITH THEM?

As long as they're not a major character in the fandom that another player might want to app, feel free! Make sure to mention it in their application and give a bit of background on them. Also, you can only bring one, so if your character has multiple familiars/pets/etc., they'll have to choose!

MY CHARACTER'S "SIDEKICK" IS A MAJOR CHARACTER, BUT I REALLY WANT TO PLAY THEM BOTH! CAN I STILL APPLY?

If you have your heart set on it, you may still app them, but we ask you to be courteous of other players; if they are a very popular side character, someone else may want to apply as them.

CAN MY CHARACTER HAVE PAST RP MEMORIES?

Yes, you can bring over a character from another RP, but please include a brief explanation of any changes in personality or big events that may have affected their overall attitude!

DO YOU ALLOW CANON UPDATES?

We do! All you need to do is have your character disappear for a day. When they return, they'll be fully canonly updated! Just drop off a note on the mod contact page so we know!

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY CR IF I DROP?

You're welcome to bring your character back later with the same CR. Characters will notice your character's disappearance, and will notice that another version of your character (if someone apps them) does not remember being there before.

Players picking up old characters that were dropped are allowed to bring in the past canon memories of the player before them if they wish as well. Just make sure to make a note in the "previous RP memories" in your application that you are picking up on the past CR of that character.

CAN CHARACTERS DIE?

Sadly yes, characters can die, but death is certainly not permanent in a world where anything is possible. The local NPCs like to keep things clean, so anyone found dead will promptly be revived. Your character may retain a few injuries, but they'll be alive.

Keep in mind murder is not without consequence in Splendor. The locals like order, and if they discover someone is causing trouble, that individual may soon find themselves in trouble.

ARE CHARACTER ABILITIES DOWNSIZED?

When the city is in its natural state, your character will have all of their abilities at full power, though the sudden change in environment may throw them off their game for a few days. When the city changes, abilities may be reduced. Those changes will be announced in the OOC comm.

Technical F.A.Q.

WILL THERE BE APPLICATION CYCLES FOR THIS GAME?

Yes. Applications are currently on a monthly schedule. Reserves will be open three days before applications. Applications will be open for one week at a time. The date of the next reserve/application cycle will be listed on application and reserves page.

IS THERE A CHARACTER CAP FOR THE ENTIRE GAME?

Yes; only 275 characters are allowed in the game at one time. Splendor can't focus on so many people at once, and there are only so many places to live!

DO YOU ALLOW CHALLENGES ON RESERVES AND APPLICATIONS?

No, sorry! If you want to apply or reserve a character that has already been claimed, you'll have to wait until either the reserve falls through or the application is rejected.

WHAT ARE ALL THE COMMUNITIES FOR?

There are four main communities in Splendorocity: The prose/log community, the communication/action community, the message board community, and the OOC community.

splendorlogs: This community is for prose/log posts. The format is loose, however, because we understand that sometimes writing a whole paragraph for a single action or word can become tedious. A bit of action tagging is allowed, but remember we do have a separate community for solid action threads!
splendorocity: This community is for communication using the seals your character is given when they arrive, as well as face-to-face action threading. Posts can combine communication and action if you wish.
splendornotices: This community is for the city message board. This is for announcements or letters only; it is not a place intended for threading, but instead a place to get ideas for a thread!
splendorooc: Pretty self-explanatory, this is the out of character community. Anything outside of the game should go here!
splendortrials: Can't decide if you like a character? Want to thread your example out with a mod or other player? Feel free to do it in this community! Members and prospective members welcome!

WHAT IS THE NOTICES COMMUNITY?

There is a rather large white board in the middle of The Metropolis district that takes up about half of a city block. The message board is a place where characters can write down messages, hang up fliers, post want ads, put up "LOOKING FOR" papers - really anything you can think of! There are also special envelopes found in boxes on the ground by the message board that people can put secret or private notes in. These envelopes can only be opened by the person the OP intends them to be opened by.

IS THERE A TAGGING SYSTEM FOR POSTS?

Yep, there sure is! We would like everyone to tag their posts with their character's first and last name. If your character is an original character, put OC: full name. Once you have a tag made for your character, please tag every entry they comment in as well. Tagging entries will help the mods out with activity checks!

WHAT ARE THE ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS GAME?

Activity checks will be held once a month. Every activity check, we would like you to have completed at least two active threads (15+ comments) or one active log (6+ comments). You may not use multiple threads that add up to 15 or 6 comments - they must be separate threads of 15 or 6 comments each. These requirements are per character, not per player. The activity checks will be announced one week in advance.

If you are concerned about activity checks, or have been on hiatus for a few weeks leading up to activity checks, please message a mod and we'll discuss your situation. We try to be as understanding as possible.

I HAVE A CHARACTER THAT HAS NO/VERY FEW ICONS. CAN I USE A PB?

If you have a shortage of icons, you're free to use a PB, but we ask you to not mix and match - please choose official art/screenshots or a PB, not both!

WHO ELSE CAN USE A PB?

Original characters can (obviously) use a PB, as long as the icons are either player-done art (or art of your specific character used with permission) or a real person - no fandom/already existing characters can be used as PBs. Also, characters that do not show their face in canon are allowed to have a PB should the player wish to have them show their face.

CAN TWO CHARACTERS USE THE SAME PB?

Nope, sorry! If someone else has your PB already, you'll have to find a new one!

CAN I RESERVE A PB?

Only fandom characters can be reserved. PBs are first come, first serve.

HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE SPLENDOROCITY ANYHOW?

Surprisingly this is a question we've gotten more from members than potential app-ees. Splendorocity is one word and pronounced as is (Splendor-osity). It's a made up word that means 'in a state of splendor or magnificence'.
