Well, MCU movies are just about the only ones I drag myself to the theater to watch anymore, so I feel you. :) And I always love reading other people's perspective on them (unless they are just WRONG, like all those idiots who insisted Pepper was a damsel in distress in IM3. Shut up, stupid people).
this movie could be called STEVE ROGERS MAKES TWO BEST FRIENDS FOREVER, and that'd be all right
YES. There was a lot of emphasis, both overt and not, about trust and friendship - the multiple talks Steve and Nat had about it, their deciding to trust Sam when they're on the run, Steve throwing his shield away and refusing to fight Bucky at the end. And more subtly, the relationships between Hill and Fury (I've read we're going to get more of that in Avengers 2), Fury and Steve, and Fury and Nat.
Natasha was awesome in this, full stop. Great article here if you havent seen it; my favorite part:
In the end, Captain America does not make the heroic sacrifice, thus further proving that Black Widow can handle the emotional weight of

Yes, I think this was my favorite part amongst many favorite parts in the movie. :) And it works so well not only because it keeps the spirit of what a Cap story should be, but it's actually pretty good continuity from Avengers -- these folk didn't really trust each other that much before. And I guess also the TRUST NO ONE vibe the movie sets up from the start is helpful to explain why didn't Cap or Nat just call the other dudes. They don't know who to trust, so they're not gonna take any chances.
You already know I'm a giant Hill stan, so FUCK YES to all of this. I was happy she got to show more range and personality this time: a

I think your essay was way less disjointed than most college essays. :) I wish I could write this well about movies, but I have a hard time reviewing them aside from MOVIE GOOD. Thank you for detailing so much of what I thought worked with this movie - very much enjoyed reading it, AND your flailing. :)
Anthony Mackie for ALL THE SUPERHERO ROLES EVER Did you happen to see his interview with Jimmy Fallon? His commentary over the clip he brought was the best. I love when actors show appropriate glee over getting to play a superhero. And Bill O'Reilly sitting there looking uncomfortable is just gold
( ... )
Aww, thank you. I actually have a degree in Film Studies, I just never use it in real life anymore, except to write meta on superhero blockbusters, apparently. :)
Hunting down Anthony Mackin on Fallon now! I haven't watched or read anything before or after I saw the movie. My plan for tonight/tomorrow is to read and watch all this stuff so I can squee some more before I watch the movie again.
And Peggy! That was Steve's most emotional scene for me - so heartbreaking
YES. I loved that scene so much, and it really made it clear how completely isolated Cap is when the movie starts. And it's ridiculous that I have to write this, but it was GREAT of them to not kill Peggy so that she could be the catalyst for Cap's story. I really did appreciate that a lot.
My only disappointment was that I was so excited when Councilwoman Hawley started beating the shit out of everyone and then...it was Black Widow. That was honestly a letdown for me, but I should have seen it coming. Hee! It would have been pretty aces if it were the Councilwoman for

So much love for the females in this movie. I didn't give Colbie Smulders enough credit in Avengers, thinking of her as a throwaway character, but she impressed me here and I'm glad they gave her more to do. Scarlett Johansson was great as usual and she owned this movie for me. And Peggy! That was Steve's most emotional scene for me - so heartbreaking. My only disappointment was that I was so excited when Councilwoman Hawley started beating the shit out of everyone and then...it was Black Widow. That was honestly a letdown for me, but I should have seen it coming.
Okay, my comments are probably going to be all over the place, but I had to start here. Marvel has done such a fabulous job with their female characters, and not just in this movie. Like you, I wasn't sold on Cobie as Hill in the Avengers, but in this movie- wow! I mean, you knew she was the only one left out, so in the van, I was thinking Okay Hill, I'm ready for you to be awesome... and she was. Even in limited screentime, I see so much potential in her character
( ... )
I really loved how they set up Natasha, her role being equal to Steve's and leading into her own story (FUCKING FINALLY).
YESSS. A friend linked this article upthread, that is basically a love letter to Natasha in this movie, and OH MY GOD, how can they not give us a Black Widow solo movie already?! :)
Mackie is the best. I plan to spend the rest of the weekend watching all the junket stuff I didn't watch/read because I was avoiding all spoilers ever. Mostly for him, OBVI.
CAP 2 CAP 2 CAP 2 seriously this was just the best movie.
But the workaround they found to deal with Cap's lack of development needs is pretty perfect: you turn his environment upside down and have him react to that. You change SHIELD, and suddenly Cap's idealism and beliefs are being used by the same kind of evil he fought in WW2, to achieve even worse global levels of horrifying genocide. And now Cap has a goal, that links to his past, that makes him choose the right people to fight along with, without anyone having to blink an eye over the fact that he's not gonna get any character development whatsoever because it's kinda impossible to give him any by design. [This is brilliant, really, when you think about it.]YESSSS. And I really love the way the conflict in this movie raises the stakes for the whole MCU. Who do we trust, how do we continue to uphold our ideals and keep the world/galaxy safe, and also how will we be funding it from now on? (I mean, I suppose Tony will foot the bill so long as everyone agrees to move into Stark

leading up to this one which just blows everything up and has long-reaching consequences for the entire 'verse. I am suddenly way more interested in what Avengers 2 is gonna look like.
OH MY GOD, YES. The thing that I've always liked about SHIELD is the power plays and dirty politics behind it, and I'm SO THRILLED they're going there, this movie actually made me more interested in watching SHIELD-the-tv-show of boredom than anything else anyone ever said about the show before. Hee. I'm mean, I'm sure they'll do nothing on the show to 'fix' SHIELD until Avengers 2 does it, but now I'm interested in how Coulson/Hill/Fury are gonna deal with it in the meantime.
Like, we had to follow Steve to Fury but I just wanted to sit with Natasha working through that one FOREEEEVVERRRR. In fact, forget Avengers 2, can we please just follow Natasha on her journey of WHAT THE FUCK AM I GONNA DO NOW instead??
ALSO ALSO CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE ARROW NECKLACE PLEASE?? The international killer spy with no identity has a symbol of loyalty/love around her

The international killer spy with no identity has a symbol of loyalty/love around her neck. Uh-huh. NATASHA, SRY2SAY, YOU'RE NOT KIDDING ANYONE.
Interestingly, I read recently in an interview that the necklace was a choice ScarJo made for her character, and that we would see why in Avengers 2. So I think there's going to be more Clint/Natasha backstory and/or at least hints of romance between them.
Can Avengers 2 be A Day In The Life at Stark Towers, with Pepper and Hill ganging up on Tony over everything, and being always right and he knows it?
I want lots of fic like this, please. :D (I'd like to WRITE this fic, but the plot bunnies haven't been forthcoming. Maybe after Hill appears in Agents of SHIELD I'll get some inspiration)
I'm still sorting out my feelings towards this movie, but after replying to scout09, I realized that I just need to rant away. So here goes...
SAM. WILSON. FOR. PRESIDENT. Actually, Anthony Mackie for ALL THE SUPERHERO ROLES EVER. Funny story about Anthony Mackie. I thought he was the guy I saw in Jack Reacher, who I thought was incredibly wooden, so I was kind of worried. Turns out... not the same guy. And did that ever make me happy. From that first scene, he sold me. I mean, it could have been a throw-away scene, but you believe that sense of a potential friendship. I oddly love that Sam is done fighting the world's wars, but is willing to follow Steve not because he is Captain America, but because he believes in what he's doing. I mean, if he isn't in Avengers 2, that's just kind of stupid to me, because I already buy him and Steve as best buddies and Steve really needs a friend
( ... )
I wish they'd mention Clint as well, I mean, one throwaway line that he's undercover somewhere and everything's explained. But the fact that she's wearing the necklace speaks volumes to me [and it's not noticeable much, I knew about it beforehand because it was in the movie stills], so I'll take what I can get
( ... )
My biggest worry way back when they announced they were gonna make solo movies for all Avengers before tackling the team was how the hell were they gonna make an origins movie for Cap and not turn it into one big chunk of US Imperialism Propaganda... and then they made the first movie and it was so earnest, and the whole IDEA of Captain America was mocked, and he looked just a bit too sad, and I thought it was the perfect tone to tell his story. [Ha, I just went back and found a post I made when the first movie came out. I stand by my thoughts
