Well, MCU movies are just about the only ones I drag myself to the theater to watch anymore, so I feel you. :) And I always love reading other people's perspective on them (unless they are just WRONG, like all those idiots who insisted Pepper was a damsel in distress in IM3. Shut up, stupid people).

this movie could be called STEVE ROGERS MAKES TWO BEST FRIENDS FOREVER, and that'd be all right

YES. There was a lot of emphasis, both overt and not, about trust and friendship - the multiple talks Steve and Nat had about it, their deciding to trust Sam when they're on the run, Steve throwing his shield away and refusing to fight Bucky at the end. And more subtly, the relationships between Hill and Fury (I've read we're going to get more of that in Avengers 2), Fury and Steve, and Fury and Nat.

Natasha was awesome in this, full stop. Great article here if you havent seen it; my favorite part:

In the end, Captain America does not make the heroic sacrifice, thus further proving that Black Widow can handle the emotional weight of being a lead character. As if anyone could really forget the most quoted line in "The Avengers" -- "I've got red in my ledger; I'd like to wipe it out" -- it helps to have that line fresh in your mind when deconstructing what Widow does in the final act of what's billed as a Captain America movie. Black Widow doesn't wipe out the red in her ledger. No, she blasts her ledger out to the world, like it was the grisliest email forward of all time. We know from here heart to heart with Hawkeye that the shame she feels about what she's done is real, and she hesitates when she realizes that taking down the bad guys means revealing her secrets. But she does it anyway, because she's not just a spy anymore; she's a super hero, and she makes a super hero's sacrifice.

YES.

Anthony Mackie for ALL THE SUPERHERO ROLES EVER

I'll start with a role in every MCU movie from now on and some guest spots on Agents of SHIELD, please? LOVE him.

MARIA. FUCKING. HILL. I cannot express how much I love it that Cobie Smulders took this role and RAN WITH IT LIKE HELL. She does SO MUCH with the very little story time she gets, it's a wonder to watch. I don't really care that much about Agents of B.O.R.E.D.O.M., but I'm looking forward to Cobie coming back for May sweeps because I'll take any and all Maria Hill I can get. GIRLCRUSHEST.

You already know I'm a giant Hill stan, so FUCK YES to all of this. I was happy she got to show more range and personality this time: a little humor, some badassery, still Fury's right hand and trusted ally. That moment where the HYDRA goons tried to rush her while she was running the helicarrier op and she casually shot them without getting up from her chair = LOL.

And they're not just using silly Easter Eggs of dropped names/events/places from the comics, it's full on character development and worldbuilding.

My expectations are so high now for MCU movies I keep waiting for one of them to disappoint me, and it keeps not happening. Can't wait for Avengers 2. SQUEE.

Yes, I think this was my favorite part amongst many favorite parts in the movie. :) And it works so well not only because it keeps the spirit of what a Cap story should be, but it's actually pretty good continuity from Avengers -- these folk didn't really trust each other that much before. And I guess also the TRUST NO ONE vibe the movie sets up from the start is helpful to explain why didn't Cap or Nat just call the other dudes. They don't know who to trust, so they're not gonna take any chances.

I was surprised that she did SO MUCH in this movie! I knew she wasn't in that many scenes, but I'm so happy that they gave Hill the really good stuff to do -- I mean, she's ultimately the one who destroys the helicarriers, and she's calling the shots in that ops too. MARIA HILL SAVED THE WORLD, TAKE THAT, HATERS. :)

And thanks for the link to that wonderful piece on Natasha! I hadn't read anything before bc I wanted to write my own thoughts down without knowing what other people were saying, but now I'm gonna hunt down every single review ever because the more I think about this movie, the more layers of awesomeness I find. Is it Avengers 2 time yet?!
