You know, for the first round, the Marvel movies were just a fun ride, but they turned a corner with The Avengers and now I'm really really invested. And I've never read a single comic and I know basically nothing about the universe. But they're doing such a good job with the characters, and I think that's what it really hinges on. Not just for me, character lover that I am, but the movies being as good as they are hinge on the fact that they're writing amazing characters.
Cap cannot change, and a character that doesn't change doesn't really make up any kind of story.I never really thought about it, but you're absolutely right. Despite the fact that I really like Steve, I've always found the first Captain America kinda boring and for exactly this reason. That's why I so appreciate them making this movie more of an ensemble. Cap can be the heart, while the people around him - who we care about just as much (if not more) - are thrown into a tailspin

YESSS to all of this. The thing I love the most about the Marvel movies is that they are character-driven movies first, superhero plot-exploding blockbusters second. [Hell, both IM3 and Cap2's superhero part is almost an afterthought.] I also really appreciate it that while a comic fan can recognize the characters/villains/some of the plots, they're making the movies all-accessible WITHOUT dumbing down the plot nor over-explaining crap, because there really is no pre-knowledge from comic books required.
Cap can be the heart, while the people around him - who we care about just as much (if not more) - are thrown into a tailspin.Yup. I love Steve, but yeah, think of him going on a solo mission and you're put to sleep because BOREDOM. He only works in an ensemble because he's got nowhere to go as

I always go into the Marvel movies just hoping to enjoy the characters and being happy with whatever else I get, so I was SO happy that the script was as well-written as it was for the reasons you pointed out. It takes it from being an enjoyable Marvel movie to just being a good movie period.
Anthony Mackie was SO GOOD in The Hurt Locker. He really deserved an Oscar nomination for that movie. So, I'm glad he's getting some more recognition for this. The character ended up being great and he's great playing him. Bring him baaaaaack, Joss!

YESSSSS. We know that they'll always have super silly villain plots in these movies, but that doesn't mean they have to dumb down character development, or the way the narrative arcs for Our Heroes. They could be telling completely stupid stories with these characters, but it warms my heart that they chose to raise the bar.

I really don't understand HOW WHY HOW WHYYYY he's not in Avengers 2. I mean. For once, isn't Cap just gonna bring Sam over to Stark Tower with "he's my new best friend and he can fly!" and Tony will pick his armor apart and make it supersonic or something just for fun? :)
