A holiday-themed snippet of conversation

Dec 23, 2008 16:57

I was talking earlier today with my friend Brett, who is a prison guard.

Me: "So, do you have any free time in the next week or so?"
Brett: "Not really. I'm working a sixteen hour shift at the prison on christmas day."
Me: "Should be some wicked-awesome holiday pay there."
Brettt: "Oh, yeah, and sixteen hours with the inmates. What could be more fun?"

*snort*

Why do I have a feeling that you and my husband would get along famously?

(Also, totally awesome. I approve.)

You know, I'm honestly not sure. I've never asked him. Why do you ask? You know somebody who works at/is an inmate in a local prison?

Next time I talk to Brett (which should be in the next few days), I'll ask him and let him know.

Yes, but you have no compassion, so...

Well, actually, you might have more valid insights into what would make for good prison guard behaviour than I do.

Well, GENERALLY. I mean, let's not be naive here; while the Canadian justice system isn't as skewed towards putting as many people in prison as the American system is, there's still probably some 15% or so of the prison population which is entirely innocent of the crimes which they have been convicted of.

But yes, provoking bad people and/or frustrated and angry people in a caged environment is probably a very bad idea. I'm fairly certain Brett has the good sense not to actually do so.

You know, actually knowing Brett, and actually knowing you, live and in person. And thus having observed both of you in conversation before and having had conversations with you, that may have been the best conversation I've ever had related to me.

Felt like I was there. Especially the 'Me: "That's what the joke hinges on, yeah."' portion. Good times.
