NIGHTSHIFT 42: MAGUS PARK

Jul 19, 2009 13:00

The shift was familiar enough, in it's own way, but it came too soon. He wasn't sure if any of the others in the group aside from Stefan had been around long enough to witness this before, but he wanted to reassure them that this was just like the changes the institute underwent at night ( Read more... )

Falis had been dozing underneath a tree, having barely noticed that Hokuto had taken her leave of the park while the sun was still higher in the sky. The sun had felt good and the hunter was relaxed just enough after the race to enjoy the setting and catch a quick nap ( ... )

With most of his day spent in the hardware store grabbing supplies, Takasugi barely noticed the passage of time until night had befallen them. For a moment, he wondered if something had happened to the staff since none of them had been collected and filed into the buses to return back to the institute. The resounding moans and groans followed by the hideous, rotting creatures that ambled their way towards him suggested that this might be true ( ... )

[From here]

Sanzo moved quickly, calmly despite the chaos. He was armed, even if the bullets were limited down to just those rounds in the chamber, but it was better than nothing. He just need to keep a cool head. It was a matter of survival, but conserving ammo at the same time. It wasn't like he'd never fought to survive before. The only different here was that a single bullet probably wouldn't put one of them down, and that these things weren't smart. The intelligence issue was what made people dangerous. Assassins with brains or even half of one presented more of a threat in his eyes. It opened up the way to creativity, which meant unpredictability in Sanzo's eyes, which lead to all sorts of potential ways to get screwed over. These things were just persistent ( ... )

The sounds of a scuffle erupted from nearby, alerting Takasugi to a new arrival. Judging by the residual cursing, he had good reason to believe it was human and not one of their "guests." There was a familiarity in his voice that made Takasugi slow down and peer around the bushes to see who it was ( ... )

The things were tough, even as decay made them fragile in areas. He'd tried blows to the neck, to other parts of the body; blows that would've killed any human or youkai, or at least knocked one out for a few hours. Instead the things were shaking it off as if it was nothing. The only thing that seemed to take them down was a direct blow to the head. The one closest to him raked its blunted nails down the monk's arm as it tried to grab him. Sanzo toolarge step back and swung the gun butt with his other hand, the thing's nails leaving a long bloody trail as it was ripped free from his arm ( ... )

Brainiac 5 didn't hear Peter calling him, or much of anything else to tell the truth. He was too caught up in his own problems at the moment.

The cool air of early evening had woken him from his unplanned nap, and his nurse had returned, apologising all the while for leaving him alone, to collect him for the bus trip back to the Institute...

And then the sun had dipped below the horizon and everything had changed in a moment.

The plants in the park around him withered and died, like the life was simply drained out of them, but that was hardly the worst of it. A strangled noise from his nurse made his head jerk up automatically and Brainiac 5 watched in horror as she convulsed and twisted and changed right before his eyes ( ... )

Brainiac 5 cringed in his chair, waiting for the cold pain of the scalpels slicing into him - a feeling that he didn't require imagination to recall - but it never came. He risked a cautious look up just in time to catch a glimpse of the nurse... flying away from him? It was as though someone or something had just picked her up and thrown her.

And Peter was standing right there. It wasn't hard to figure out what was most likely to have occurred, but if that was the case, then... Peter had been keeping things from him. For some reason that hurt a bit, though he knew he had no logical reasons to expect Peter to be open with him, and he would have asked about it right then and there if it hadn't been for Peter cutting him off and grabbing him by the waist. Brainiac 5 tensed up immediately, hands moving to push at Peter's arm.

"I apologise in advance for this."He was about to ask 'for what?', when he was suddenly hauled bodily out of the wheelchair and hefted over Peter's shoulder. Then they were moving, racing through a crowd of people ( ... )

Naruto had no idea what was going on. He'd slept through most of the day, which had left him feeling rested and refreshed, but that changed quickly as he saw the chaos around. Hands were bursting from the ground, bodies clawing themselves out ( ... )

[coming in late from here]

The park was overran by the fiends and Renamon used the branch to her best abilities, though with her willpower fueling her current movement, it would give out before she did. That was good. That meant she'd have opportunities left to her afterwards. They would scan the park quickly, and then Renamon was getting a weapon. This was fact.

In a sweep around, Renamon experienced an odd sense of deja vu as she saw another branch wielded much the same. Almost curious she cocked her head as the assailant rose to his feet revealing the one that they were seeking. She shook her head at the universe's ironies once more, started towards Jiraiya's student.

That she hadn't spoke to the man himself, and kept a single-minded focus should have set in by now to her companion.

Jiraiya was relieved to see Naruto intact--but that didn't show on his face. Not yet, surrounded by murderous undead. It wasn't safe to relax just yet.

It probably wouldn't be safe to relax the rest of the night. And who knew what tomorrow morning would bring...

But for now, he swung his femur bat and took out what zombies were between them and Naruto, calling out the boy's name as they approached. "Naruto!"

Naruto turned at the sound of the familiar voice, still brandishing the branch as if it was a sword. It wasn't a blade, but it would do for now...Well, to keep them away temporarily, maybe, but if he wanted to get rid of one he'd need another solution.

"Ero-sennin!" He said, relieved to see him as well as Renamon. He gave her a nod, but he had no hopes that either of them had proper weapons, considering what they were both wielding.

"You two okay?" He said, stomping on a hand that had started crawling out of the ground next to his foot again.

Soma hadn't exactly been aware of her surroundings as the day drew to a close. Truth be told, she had let herself become a little distracted, caught up in enjoying the presence of her newfound friends and simply getting a little fresh air. It had been a welcome respite from the Institute, and as difficult as it had been to get herself to relax at first, she had found the hours slipping away surprisingly quickly ( ... )
