NIGHTSHIFT 42: MAGUS PARK

Jul 19, 2009 13:00

The shift was familiar enough, in it's own way, but it came too soon. He wasn't sure if any of the others in the group aside from Stefan had been around long enough to witness this before, but he wanted to reassure them that this was just like the changes the institute underwent at night ( Read more... )

Naruto had no idea what was going on. He'd slept through most of the day, which had left him feeling rested and refreshed, but that changed quickly as he saw the chaos around. Hands were bursting from the ground, bodies clawing themselves out.

He'd heard of things like this, vaguely, and he felt a surge of sharp nausea at the sight of the bodies climbing out, their flesh rotting and falling apart on their bones. There was a heavy, disgusting smell that he felt he wouldn't be able to shake out for days. His thought process seemed to have slowed, and he was desperately trying to think of something to do, of a way to react.

That was easily solved by a hand grasping at his ankle from the ground. He shrieked and tried to jump away, but the grip was tight, and he fell flat on the ground. He kicked at the hand with his other foot, as hard as he could, as he clawed at the ground and tried to drag himself away from the grip.

How the hell could they be so strong? They were decomposing and the grip felt tighter than any strong, healthy human grip. No matter how much he kicked the hand wasn't loosening around his ankle, and soon a head started to show up above the ground.

"Shit!" He turned and looked around to see if there was anyone around that could help him. But he didn't want to call for help; he was a shinobi, he could figure this out. He wasn't a wimp, this was just...one of those zombie things, right?

As he tried to crawl away, Naruto's hand found a tree branch. He grasped it tightly and with a cry aimed it at the zombie's eye socket, distracting it long enough that he managed to kick the hand off his ankle (and slightly hurting himself in the process, but that was a small price to pay). He quickly got up, the branch still in his hand, brandishing it like a weapon.

Well, this was going to be an interesting night.

[coming in late from here]

The park was overran by the fiends and Renamon used the branch to her best abilities, though with her willpower fueling her current movement, it would give out before she did. That was good. That meant she'd have opportunities left to her afterwards. They would scan the park quickly, and then Renamon was getting a weapon. This was fact.

In a sweep around, Renamon experienced an odd sense of deja vu as she saw another branch wielded much the same. Almost curious she cocked her head as the assailant rose to his feet revealing the one that they were seeking. She shook her head at the universe's ironies once more, started towards Jiraiya's student.

That she hadn't spoke to the man himself, and kept a single-minded focus should have set in by now to her companion.

Jiraiya was relieved to see Naruto intact--but that didn't show on his face. Not yet, surrounded by murderous undead. It wasn't safe to relax just yet.

It probably wouldn't be safe to relax the rest of the night. And who knew what tomorrow morning would bring...

But for now, he swung his femur bat and took out what zombies were between them and Naruto, calling out the boy's name as they approached. "Naruto!"

Naruto turned at the sound of the familiar voice, still brandishing the branch as if it was a sword. It wasn't a blade, but it would do for now...Well, to keep them away temporarily, maybe, but if he wanted to get rid of one he'd need another solution.

"Ero-sennin!" He said, relieved to see him as well as Renamon. He gave her a nod, but he had no hopes that either of them had proper weapons, considering what they were both wielding.

"You two okay?" He said, stomping on a hand that had started crawling out of the ground next to his foot again.

The Digimon nodded in reply, pleased in spite of herself. Naruto seemed fine, given the circumstances, which placed stock in his upbringing. Much like a few she knew herself, the boy was competent despite some of his behavior. Good to know.

At Jiraiya's off-repeated nickname, Renamon raised an eyebrow almost teasingly. The murmur slid into the Sannin's direction, "It seems more fitting, one might say."

But after that her attention shifted back like it had never strayed, and she closed her eyes briefly in a nod. "Yes," was her reply, despite the cast on her arm and her fractionally slower movements. She would be fine. And that was all that mattered. Passing up the return question to Jiraiya, Renamon asked another, shifting her own branch in her grip as she eyed the dismantled body parts around the park. "Would you like to find something better than branches?"

"O-Oy, Naruto..." Jiraiya sagged a little when Renamon caught on to the nickname. "Can't you call your godfather something else around women...?"

The last thing they needed was for her to figure out he was a pervert in the middle of a zombie--

--that. That woman--former woman--over to his left... He could tell how spectacular her breasts must have been before she died! Jiraiya could certain imagine it, considering how her clothes had--

--Oh. Right. They were in danger! There was time gawk at more lively bodies back at the Institute. Ones whose owners didn't want to eat him, most likely. He'd much rather be beaten to an inch within his life rather than be eaten by the undead. It was a personal preference of his.

"We're fine, Naruto," Jiraiya stated, straightening as he regained his composure. "But we need to get you two something better." He held up his femur. "The femur is the strongest bone in your body--the one in your upper thigh--so I'd suggest going with that. For now, anyways. We can find something stronger later on."

"Uh, yeah," Naruto said, glancing at his branch and Renamon's. A better weapon would be advantageous, even if looking for one could lead to them exposing themselves to more danger.

He gave Jiraiya a look, wondering if he'd be fine with Naruto calling him 'old man'. Using his name was weird; he'd never really used it, even to talk about Jiraiya to others. Either way, now wasn't the time to think about that, so Naruto listened to the man's suggestion.

"Wait, how do we get one of those?" Naruto asked, wrinkling his nose. Would they have to...rip off their legs? That means already killing one, and he wasn't sure he was going to willingly get close to any of the zombies.

Renamon watched the hordes complacently as the two spoke, making sure none were dragging their corpses too close. The park was too open, no actual cover in sight, and it made Renamon nervous. She wanted cover, and decent weapons, and while she was asking things, she'd also like to desist being a human, because then this would be easy clean-up, not like when they had been baking that day, because that took--

Her jittering mind stilled once more, a creeping calm settling over her. "I'll pass," she said well-naturedly to Jiraiya, shifting through her small variety of moods with an almost fluid grace. And why shouldn't she? The screams and sounds of chaos had given it away, marked in time with a well-placed memory. And because of that, the necessity to use a human limb as a rather distasteful weapon was fleeting. "There are restaurants, correct? As well as other places." The Digimon shifted her weight, moving to leave. "I believe I'll follow the current trend, and gather weapons from there. Places like that, in particular, should have a variety of knives."

She gave a small grin, some edge that had been lacking shifting back into place. "If we hurry, I'm sure we'll find something fun."

Jiraiya smirked at Naruto. "How do you think you get one?"

It was a bit disgusting, but you did what you had to do to survive. And Renamon's proposal would probably sit a lot better with Naruto, anyways. The kid hadn't been desensitized by war, and he wasn't trained for blunt weapons, anyways.

"Knives would be good for Naruto," Jiraiya replied in response to Renamon. "I didn't train him too much in using blunt weapons. That is, if the restaurants and the like aren't already picked clean of weapons. If they don't, there's always that hardware store I heard about...."

Jiraiya just preferred some distance between him and the zombies. The less he had to touch them, the better. There was no way he could properly save any beautiful women in distress if he was smelling like a corpse!

He smirked, then, in response to Renamon. "That's right, enough talk! If we wait too long, we'll miss out!"

Naruto gave Renamon a thankful look, because he'd honestly not been eager to rip out a zombie's leg to use as a weapon. They were disgusting enough as it is, he didn't want to walk around with a piece of one as a weapon.

"That sounds safer," he said, nodding, before giving a quick look around in the hopes that no zombies were coming near.

"Which way is the restaurant, then?" Naruto had never been there, and it was harder to get around at night. With zombies prowling around the streets.

"Knives, it is," she replied good-naturedly, returning Naruto's look with a brief nod. He wasn't the only one relieved. A small smile touched her face briefly. "I believe there's more than one, but one is close to the bookstore we've been to a few times...."
