Iowa is a famous
battleship, easily the best
song by Dar Williams, and the
29th state. At least stereotypically the state may be the least interesting one. Despite its close proximity to my home state of North Dakota, to the best of my family's recollection we've only been to Iowa once, and that was merely a drive-through, thereby resigning it to partial credit.
The visit in question was toward the very beginning of our epic 1989 family road trip, which as we've seen lasted five weeks and led to my first visits to
North Carolina,
Delaware and others. Before we headed east, we doglegged west to
De Smet, South Dakota, which of course is famous as the setting of several of the
Little House books. Once we'd toured the town, we headed east. This involved a quick drive through Iowa, which marked my only known appearance in the state.
To be honest, I'm not sure why I'd go back to Iowa. My sister suggested visiting the
Field of Dreams, but that seems a bit dubious to me. Are there any other compelling reasons to visit the state? Or even kind of compelling reasons?
