My most recent trip to
Missouri was a brief drive-through with no or minimal stops when I helped my sister move from Atlanta to Anchorage in 2008. If that's all I had I wouldn't count it, but as it happens I spent a weekend in St. Louis in 1996.
That fall I was in the midst of my sole season as a backup defensive lineman for the
CWRU Spartans. That year's major road trip was against
Washington University, so we flew in to
St. Louis on Friday afternoon. That night we bummed around downtown, and on Saturday we were utterly destroyed on the field.
We were right downtown, so we walked under the
Arch. We also strolled past
Old Busch Stadium and the then brand new
home of the Rams. We also had dinner at a swanky Italian place.
Most interestingly, we went into the
The National Coin-Op and Video Game Museum. It had many working arcade games so it would have been fun just to play the games, but it also had signs on each game explaining why it was historically notable. It was a lot of fun and I'd heartily recommend it, except that the internet reports that it has been closed since 1999.
I'd like to go back to St. Louis for a Cardinals game, and I wouldn't mind hitting a game in
Kansas City either since
Kauffman Stadium is supposed to be nice. I'm sure there are other nice cultural things there too, like the
Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
