Since this challenge popped up right around the same time that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 hit US Netflix I figured I might as well go with that one since I never got around to seeing it. I'll be honest, I went into the movie assuming I wasn't going to like it much. The first one just wasn't my thing and it's not like there was going to be a dramatic shift in-between. It was fine. I get why people enjoy them but I just don't. I actually almost gave up not to far in because Drax's laughter was too constant and too loud. It grated on my nerves

Even though I think Guardians would be 'classified" as a superhero movie, I agree with you, it's not, since the characters really don't have superpowers nor particularly protective (except in a pinch) but are just miscellaneous misfits. I did like the first Guardians a lot, mostly powered by the music, I think, and the second one not so much, since the evil Dad thing is a rather tired trope in my opinion. I like your thoughts about the genre, though. I guess the appeal of superheroes should be in the "hero" part, but lately it seems they focus more on the "super" part.
It's not just human with superhuman abilities. Some heroes aren't human and some heroes' abilities aren't superhuman. There's also the traditional element of protecting people. There are plenty of stories to tell about people with abilities who doen't see it as their responsibility to save the world and such. This is where movies like Chronicle fall. Some people call it a superhero movie but I don't see it as one.
I kinda touched on this in my comment. I do view superhero movies as movies where the hero has some sort of superpower. Like Iron Man, Superman, Wonder Woman.
Then there's the simple heroic movies: where an everyday person makes a stand that changes everything. Like Hunger Games, Divergent, etc. Those tend to be my favorites.
But I also realize it's not that easy to classify. Like I'd call Batman a superhero, even though he has no superpowers. He does, however, have enough money to make whatever he needs to mimic powers though. On the other hand, I'd call Harry Potter a simple heroic movie, even though it's all about
Batman really is the one who screws everything up. He's such an iconic superhero that few are going to argue that he doesn't fit the definition.
There's definitely a difference between a superhero and a hero's journey. Harry Potter would be the latter as would things like Hunger Games and Divergent. Though superheros can also have that hero's journey story arc.
What are your thoughts in general on the movie you chose? I loved it a whole lot. I went into it expecting to love it since it starred my favorite superhero, Thor, and featured my favorite actress, Cate Blanchett. But I did not expect to love it as much as I did. Have you seen this movie before? If so, did you enjoy a repeated viewing? I have now seen it twice in the theater. If not, what did you think? Did you have expectations going into it? Which characters did you like the most? The least? Most: Hela. I love her. Such a great villain. She's everything I want a villain to be. She's evil and loves what she does. She's badass and powerful and doesn't hide it. She's thoroughly horrible, and that's what makes her a great villain. Also, I like that Thor can't even come close to her power and has to go with a backup plan. Least favorite? The Grandmaster. I like the actor okay, but the character was just annoying to me. And not even in an interesting way. Every time he was on screen I couldn't wait for him to be off. Which scene was your

Thor: Ragnarok is another one that I'll probably watch eventually when it hits Netflix. It's not something I'm super pumped to watch but much like Guardians will to see what it's all about. It's funny because I generally like Taika Waititi but his style is not what I'm looking for in a superhero movie. I'm much to opposite of your tastes. I like dark.
And yet Marvel has clearly done a better job with the movies...
No kidding. I find the DC movies so damn dark. There's like no levity at all. The filming, the dialogue, the plot....just DARK. Marvel's done a ton better putting color into its movies (except really X-Men IMO).
I guess I missed the boat because I had no idea Cate Blanchett was in this film! Thanks for the heads-up, I guess I'll check that out now. I do remember some funny stuff Taika said about...what was it, if you go out with Thor you know what he wants but he's not gonna get it? Well I can't remember but it made it sound like the movie might be funny, which is appealing. I like funny.
What are your thoughts in general on the movie you chose? So I just rewatched this and it really holds up. I was "eh" about it when it first came out but my brother was very enthusiastic, so I watched it and yes, it is a cut above the usual boring posturing and mega-long battles. It's smart, funny, quirky, ironic, has a nice mix of characters, and a fantastic backstory which I was previously unfamiliar with.
Have you seen this movie before? If so, did you enjoy a repeated viewing? Yes, seen it several times and this last rewatch really held up.
If not, what did you think? Did you have expectations going into it? My only expectations were to relax and enjoy a low stress, amusing action tale. So it worked for me!
Which characters did you like the most? The least?I like all the characters, especially his sidekicks, though the bad guy was annoying at times, too flat. Also, it's nice to have some father-daughter angst for a change, instead of all the father-son stuff that usually happens on TV and movies. Evangeline Lilly is quite

But, with the Marvel franchise, I've gotten super tired of the genre. It's just too much, too noisy, and too predictable. I was never a comic book reader so I don't really have these stories as part of my past, and I find the tropes get tedious.
I kind of feel like this. I haven't even seen the last few because it's just... not as fun as it used to be. Maybe it would be different if I'd read all the comics and could identify more with the stories (or even have something to rant about each time they change a thing like I did with the HP movies).
Haven't seen Wonder Woman yet, but I really want to.
I think you would like Wonder Woman, it's got some great "previous era" elements, some awesome heroines, and good humor. A bit prolonged in the ol' final battles, as always, but it moves right along and doesn't really bog down. Let us know what you think!

I wish I could do this, but it's got to have a plot that doesn't make me go WTF. I do recall Ant Man having a decent plot.
