What are your thoughts in general on the movie you chose? I love Age of Ultron. The cast really hit it out of the ballpark with their chemistry and timing. The writing and dialogue were great, everyone had an interaction scene, there was a decent storyline, a non one note villain, and good secondary characters helping. The team seemed more like a family than coworkers.
Have you seen this movie before? If so, did you enjoy a repeated viewing? Oh hells yeah.
If not, what did you think? Did you have expectations going into it? I really liked that they "humanized" some of the characters, and not necessarily in an "omg my backstory is beyond anguish" kinda way. Many of them were rooted in real life issues, like wanting a family and love.
Which characters did you like the most? The least? Hawkeye. I loved that they finally solidified the roles each hero plays, and Hawkeye is the "dad". He does connect with all of them, whereas the others gel best with certain partners.
Which scene was your favorite and why? Hawkeye's home.
Would you ( ... )

Hahah I guess I didn't see the George Clooney Batman but I can imagine enjoying him as Bruce Wayne, that would be a lovely fit. I agree with you on the "short on plot" thing. Maybe I need to rewatch Ultron to really appreciate it; I think last time I was distracted.

Most superhero movies I've found have plots so thin even water is thicker.
Ha, true! I guess with the focus on superpowers and special effects, a lot of creators don't put too much effort into the rest, so a lot of the time the plot (and, sadly, sometimes the characters) have to take the backseat.

I'd love to hear more about your thoughts on the X-Men movies. I've read very little in way of the comics but am really into mutants as a storyline. I for sure have my own feelings on the movies but nothing super strong so I'd love some expounding on your loathing.

My movie: Megamind

What are your thoughts in general on the movie you chose?Since no one said it had to be a live action superhero movie, I picked an animated one. I've watched Megamind several times and I still love it to bits. Sadly it's a seriously underrated movie and I really wish more people would watch it and realize how awesome it it ( ... )

Do you enjoy superhero movies in general?
Kind of. I say kind of because I love superhero movies like Megamind or Zoom or Sky High - light-hearted and funny and cheesy and heart-warming. That's not to say the big action-y ones like the Avengers movies aren't great, but if I'm tuning into superheroes, I don't want to see them broken. I don't want to walk out of the cinema feeling like I want to give everyone hugs until they don't hurt anymore. The Guardians of the Galaxy movies manage to balance their big drama with enough humour and cute stuff, but not every superhero manages (especially not if the creators are trying to be edgy - tbh, I'd much rather have cheesy and happy than edgy and near-dystopian.)

When do they work or not work for you?
I think I kind of answered that above, but I don't like superhero movies that are about tearing the heroes down. It doesn't always have to be the end of the world - that gets old fast.

Are there any tropes of the genre that you particularly like or dislike?Traditionally the hero saves the day ( ... )

Sky High is so good. If something I hadn't yet seem didn't just drop on Netflix I probably would have just re-watched that one.

Sky High is one of the best superhero movies out there, and yet so underrated... :/

The movie I chose: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

What are your thoughts in general on the movie you chose? I have watched it several times before and it was always my favourite which really brought me to love MCU even more.
Have you seen this movie before? If so, did you enjoy a repeated viewing? I could watch it times and times again, I feel like it does not get old because you have a different aspect to focus on every single time you watch it - e.g. this time I fixated more on the fight scenes.
Which characters did you like the most? The least? Obviously Steve and Bucky are my favourite not only in this movie, but in the MCU. I think this film really shows the side of Steve which is often overlooked in other movies (*cough*Age of Ultron*cough) - he's first and foremost, a person, not just the model Captain America who spouts "Language!" everytime he hears a bad word. Honestly, I'll probably never hating Rumlow. Even though Pierce seems to be the big bad villain in the movie, but Rumlow somehow strikes me as even worse.

Winter Soldier is one of my favorites as well. It's actually an interesting one in this particular discussion because though Captain America is a superhero this movie pulls from political and spy thrillers and really leans that way more then being your standard superhero movie.

Just rewatched it tonight as well, and I think this the most "human" Steven Rogers post-serum we saw so far - the final battle and his readiness to die at Bucky's hands just baffled me. And yet, he tries one last time to make him remember by saying another famous line.

When I saw it the first time, I loved the highway scene (plus the car chase with Nick Fury), but now in rewatching, it was even more awesome. And I still love the way Sebastian juggles the knife in the hand-to-hand combat scenes.

About the nomad costume: the comic version is really silly, but I think they toned it down nicely for "Infinity War" (click for full size).

Winter Soldier is my favorite of the Captain America movies. It's weird how Bucky Barnes was barely noticeable in the first movie but how that friendship takes off to greater heights in the Winter Soldier and following movie. I love that Steve has the capacity for this great friendship, willing to go to the end of the road to bring him friend back from the brink.

Captain America - The First Avenger sandy79 December 29 2017, 02:34:43 UTC
What are your thoughts in general on the movie you chose?

I really thought long about which one I should do (there's quite a list to choose from), but then I concluded: if I have the honor to do one, why not starting at the beginning, with the birth of "The First Avenger"?

Have you seen this movie before?

Yes, once when it premiered on the local TV station, and now for a second time on DVD. And I always enjoy the MCU movies.

Which characters did you like the most?

Steven Rogers: Kudos to both Chris Evans and the team for pulling "skinny" Steven off. I don't know how they did it, but it always brings a smile to my face when I see him standing to Bucky.

Bucky Barnes: The first time, Steven's lifelong best friend was pretty much invisible to me (like he himself felt in the bar with Peggy and Steven XD). But now, I finally see the wonderful character we got here - before his life took this incredibly painful, twisted turn. He supports Steven, even if he's not okay with his best friend becoming a soldier as well. But after Steven ( ... )

his ping-pong-like banter with one Pietro Maximoff

This is why I prefer the Marvel movies (excluding the X-Men) over the DC ones. There's no fun! Especially no fun dialogue. It's just dark dark dark and woe woe is me.

To be honest, I haven't seen any of the newer DC movies (except for Wonder Woman and Batman Begins). So I don't know anything about the dialogues, but if they are all like in "Batman Begins", I get it what you're saying. And that kind of darkness (read: hopelessness) is what drove me a bit away from "Arrow" - it reminds me too much of Batman, and that's not what I'm looking for in a show about the Emerald Archer.

If I remember correctly from the last time I saw any of the X-Men movies, there was some fun sprinkled in them. Especially in the dialogues, mostly in those including Logan and Professor X. But I still have to see them with the original voices (German dubbing can be both a blessing and a curse!).

What I love the most about Marvel characters is the fact that, these so-called "superheroes" are plain humans beneath the costume, beneath the masks.

Strangely enough I was thinking of this when I was thinking about the movies and why I had certain favorites.

Although I loved seeing Thor as a person rather than a GOD, and also enjoyed seeing the real person hidden beneath the Hulk and Captain America, I have to admit I mostly I love how it's possible for a human to be a superhero without having to fall into a vat of chemicals, or be genetically altered in some way.

Doctor Strange tarlanx December 29 2017, 12:50:20 UTC
What are your thoughts in general on the movie you chose? I chose Doctor Strange because this challenge turned up not long before I was given a copy of the movie for Christmas. I wasn't sure what to expect as I had never read any of the superhero comics for this character but the trailer looked interesting. Overall it was pretty good. Doctor Strange was an intriguing character who was (and remained) arrogant because of his mental acuity (photographic memory), but I liked that his arrogance was also a stubborn determination to succeed in any endeavor, refusing to give up or give in. I liked seeing how he wore down the 'Ancient One' and loved how he wasn't an expert right from the start, barely able to create anything because his own brilliant mind was too rigid at first. I liked seeing him learn there was more to life and the universe than what he could see and touch in the physical world, and that mysticism had its place. I also enjoyed how he was prepared to think outside the box in order to save the world from being engulfed. His ( ... )

Do you enjoy superhero movies in general? Yes and no! I have really enjoyed the MCU superhero movies - Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, X-Men movies especially, and even this one, Doctor Strange, but I've never gone out of my way to watch others like Batman, Spiderman, Superman etc. I had to be dragged along to see the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie and ended up enjoying it a lot.

When do they work or not work for you? It's a little shallow but I often get roped in because it is an actor I like or the trailer looked particularly good but after that the movie has to stand on its own merit or it will never be re-watched by me.

Are there any tropes of the genre that you particularly like or dislike? I don't like things too tragic and dark unless they are used to uplift the characters and bring some light back. I'm not keen on conflict between superheroes either. I do love seeing people working together to save everyone, willing to sacrifice themselves for another and in doing so prove their true worth.

Are there any films that subvert ( ... )

I also really love when superhero movies have humans with no special powers other than their skills to help save the day too! While superheroes with other-wordly powers are awesome obviously, it's always nice to see someone just like us make an impact.

It allows us ordinary humans to realize we can be superheroes too :)
