YouTube - not safe any more

Mar 21, 2007 17:51

There is a thread on Kawoosh, started last summer, where we were discussing whether or not it was a good idea to be posting music videos to YouTube. Was the exposure something we, as a fandom, could withstand? Was the free hosting worth the very public venue? Would MGM take action against us ( Read more... )

{{hugs}} I'm sorry. I hope The Alpha Site can weather this.

What I gather is the problem with YouTube is that it is making money on the vids by selling ads on the site. So while there may be disclaimers on the vids themselves and the vid makers are making no money the site itself is every time someone watches a vid there. At least that is what i understood from the article linked at Gateworld.

trueFD is not the sharpest tack in the box, if you catch my drift. I've never seen anyone linking to videos offsite, have you? But hey, since he brought it up, I'm going to see if I can get an answer (finally) about what to do if we find videos that have been uploaded by people who didn't make them.

And yeah, people who have already have vids removed are still posting. I think it's absolutely ridiculous, and they're making the rest of us look bad.

I hate stupid people.

They won't be able to stop the internet. What's the next stage of evolution for the internet? Whatever it is, you know the public will be the first to grab hold of the technology and the resources ages before the corporations do. Fandoms will keep going on and on no matter how much the corporations want to shut down their creative outlets like fiction, vids and pics.

There has been a lot of discussion around this:

The "You Can/Can't Stop The Signal" discussion

Then a recent migration to iMeem (an alternative to Youtube - is it any better? safer?)

http://morgandawn.livejournal.com/tag/imeem

I'd love to read the discussion on Kawoosh - is there a link?

Sorry about not putting those links in the original post. I'll reply them to you and then edit to add them.

People posting others vids & legal stuff

YouTube - not safe any more (What can I say? It was my "let's rant everywhere" day... :)

I'm going to go read those ones you linked to, too. I think this discussion has been a long time coming. I just wish it had never come to this point.

The 'discussion' has been going on - at least the putting vids online part - since we started digitized our vids 6-67 years ago. It spans a many fandoms and thousands of groups of vidders - in fact vidding has grown so much that there is no longer a single vidding culture or set of guidelines ( ... )

I didn't want worldwide publicity. I didn't want worldwide exposure. I've been yelled at, insulted, called every name in the book and more, all because I tried my damndest to keep my vids as under the radar as possible. I made them in a small fandom community, and that's where I wanted them to stay.I think you missed one of the points in brihana's post. She (and others who want to fly under the radar as it were), has lost a certain amount of control as to the distribution of their vids ( ... )

- youtube is the WRONG place to put fandom related songvids or to post episodes (although I've watched both there when sent links) - but in the case of Stargate, I think there's something else at work here that really has nothing to do with copyright infringements. Remember, Songvids are shown at Stargate cons and are an accepted form of recognition for any show, including Stargate. BUT we're coming up on the last 10 episodes of SG1, the last pivotal episodes of season 3 of SGA (and then what might very well be the last season of SGA on SciFi, namely season 4). MGM has a great deal invested and depends on the advertising dollars and then the viewing public spending money as a result. BUT if the episodes are shown commercial free on YouTube and videos are popping up with spoilers in them - MGM stands to lose a ton of money ( ... )

my thoughts - what is happening on Youtube is part of the ongoing battle between *all* content producers and places like Youtube - each is trying to control the next method of distributing media. I have numerous links to the deals being negotiated, the lawsuits being filed and the demands that content (vids) be taken down -- part of both the negotiations and the legal battles.

I can't help but think if they wanted people to watch these shows live they should have aired them before they aired in Canada and UK. this 6 month break is killing the show.

I don't get that either - other than the fact that they wanted to air their own stuff, give it all a chance to settle in? THEN bring SG1 and SGA back?
