YouTube - not safe any more

There is a thread on Kawoosh, started last summer, where we were discussing whether or not it was a good idea to be posting music videos to YouTube. Was the exposure something we, as a fandom, could withstand? Was the free hosting worth the very public venue? Would MGM take action against us ( Read more... )

- youtube is the WRONG place to put fandom related songvids or to post episodes (although I've watched both there when sent links) - but in the case of Stargate, I think there's something else at work here that really has nothing to do with copyright infringements. Remember, Songvids are shown at Stargate cons and are an accepted form of recognition for any show, including Stargate. BUT we're coming up on the last 10 episodes of SG1, the last pivotal episodes of season 3 of SGA (and then what might very well be the last season of SGA on SciFi, namely season 4). MGM has a great deal invested and depends on the advertising dollars and then the viewing public spending money as a result. BUT if the episodes are shown commercial free on YouTube and videos are popping up with spoilers in them - MGM stands to lose a ton of money.

YouTube debuted in 2005 and songvids and episodes appeared almost immediately, but nothing really happened because both shows *seemed* safe - then SG1 was cancelled, politics reared its ugly head and MGM started to worry and thus, came down hard - on us.

Again, I agree that Youtube is not the place, but at the same time, googling any song vid and finding it is as easy as typing. If MGM really wanted to stop it, they'd be going after all the Stargate sites, but they really don't - they just want to protect their current investment and that means trying to ensure that we watch the final episodes of SG1 "Live" and the rest of season 3 for SGA live.

Just my $.02 - and worth less. *grin*

my thoughts - what is happening on Youtube is part of the ongoing battle between *all* content producers and places like Youtube - each is trying to control the next method of distributing media. I have numerous links to the deals being negotiated, the lawsuits being filed and the demands that content (vids) be taken down -- part of both the negotiations and the legal battles.

I can't help but think if they wanted people to watch these shows live they should have aired them before they aired in Canada and UK. this 6 month break is killing the show.

I don't get that either - other than the fact that they wanted to air their own stuff, give it all a chance to settle in? THEN bring SG1 and SGA back?

I didn't like any of the shows they are currently airing except for BSG. I tried the Dresden Files keeping an open mind because I love wizards and magic and shit like that...but it just didn't work for me. :( maybe I'll try later and see how it goes.
