WTF Wednesday - Boston Rental Prices

So, if I haven’t mentioned it yet, The Place makes software for the real estate market. And it looks like people share real estate articles with the group on Slack (our IM software). I’ve been there three days and I’ve already seen two or three articles.

YUP.

That's why I stay in Quincy...and that is only by owning. If I were paying rent for my space it would run for $1200 to $1500.

How do you like slack? I am pushing for Jive for the collaboration options. I saw an ad for slack the other day that looked promising too.

It feels a lot like HipChat to me, which is what we used at the previous gig. We've got lots of rooms for the different departments and teams, lots of general chatter in our All Hands Boston and Random rooms. The Support room has a running feed of JIRA tickets as they get filed. And there's the ability to have a one-on-one conversation with someone that only the two of you see.

I'm about twenty years older than the vast majority of the kids at the office, so I'm still getting used to how much they use emojis and animated gifs for EVERYTHING and not just in the Random chat room where folks are just gossiping.

The extremely useful feature of Slack for me is that the minute you join a room, you have access to the entire archives of the room. Which means that even though it's my first week, I've been able to search the archives and find references to wiki articles and Google docs that folks shared long before I got there. And on one of my TW mailing lists someone just mentioned the "Write the Docs" Slack channel, and I was able ( ... )
