CHAPTER 4
Bam seemed to be on automatic when he returned to the car. Buckling in, he drove mechanically away from he hospital, hyperaware of the blood-stained bat that Novak had across his legs. April cleared her throat.
"I'm gonna call Phil," she announced softly. She pulled out her cell phone and hit speed dial two. It rang a couple of times before an out of breath Phil picked up. "Phil?"
"Are you okay April?" Phil asked immediately. "What about Bam? Is he all right?"
"Yeah," April sighed, slumping against the window. "Yeah, we're all okay. For now. What's goin' on, Phil? What's wrong with everyone?"
"I'm not sure," Phil conceded. "Apparently, these people are dying from the bites they get and coming back to life... They only attack living humans. The radio and the news keep telling us to remove the head or destroy the brain."
"You're okay, then?" questioned April. "You and Jess and Vito are all fine?"
"Yeah," Phil said. "New York was fun until this happened. Where are you headed? We can meet up."
"Hold on, hun," April replied. "Bam, where're we going?"
"Baltimore," he replied, still driving mechanically. "Tell 'em that we'll call when we get a better idea of where we're staying. Hopefully it's far enough away that they didn't get infected, either."
April repeated this to her husband, wished him love and luck, and hung up just in time for Bam to stop the car suddenly. In the street right in front of the car stood Ville Valo and Ryan Dunn. Bam grinned, his trance broken. He got out of the car and hugged Ville. "Dude, how are you? It's been a while."
"Yes, Bam Bam, it has. What's going on?" Ville asked, hugging back before waving at April, Novak, and Raab.
"I'm not sure, Ville. We're heading to Baltimore; wanna come?"
"Of course!" Ville cheered and headed to the back of the car, scooting in next to April.
"You know Ville?" both Ryan and Bam asked at the same time, before they laughed.
"Yeah, a little over a year now. Novak introduced me. You?" Bam said.
"Hmm... Five, maybe six years," Ryan answered thoughtfully. "Actually, I introduced him to Novak." He paused. "So, Baltimore, huh? Am I invited on this trip too, or do I have to stick it out with the zombies in West Chester?"
"Of course you're invited, dude!" Bam laughed. He looked back at the car to see Novak in the driver's seat, grinning like the cat that got the canary. "Well, it looks like we'll have to double up..."
Fifteen minutes later, the were driving down the mostly abandoned highway, Bam seated in Ryan's lap. Raab had refused to move, Ville had just got comfortable, Novak had the keys, and Bam wouldn't ask his mother to sit in anyone's lap or let anyone sit in her lap.
In all honesty, Bam felt safe in Ryan's lap. The man had a presence about him, an overall manliness that Bam was sure he had too, but Ryan's manliness was much more comforting than his own. Bam blinked several times, not understanding his own thoughts. He decided mentally to forgo thinking altogether and clear his mind.
Bam watched helplessly as they slowed to pass inbetween a bus and another car, while in the back of the bus a lady was getting attacked.
"Fuck... This is worse than I thought," Raab muttered, looking at the fights and car crashes happening all around them. "I mean, my cousin -he's a cop- told me something funny was going on with the people down in Tallahassee, ya know? People acting really bite-friend an' shit, but I never expected it to be this bad. I never expected this in the first place!"
"At least you knew something about it," Ryan scoffed. "I mean, Ville was over last night, and it was fine. I went to the store an' everything! But this morning, ya know, we got this poundin' on the door-"
"Ville was over your place last night?" Bam and Novak simultaneously asked the mechanic. They shot glances at each other, eyes narrowing in suspicion.
"Well, yeah... His plane got in yesterday and he needed a place to stay," Ryan answered, looking back and forth between the man in his lap -'Oh god, this guy's sexy...'- and the driver. "Why are you guys actin' weird?"
"No reason," they chimed with flase happiness in their voices. Ryan looked back at Ville, who innocently shrugged, and Ryan felt Novak step on the gas a bit more. It was a nearly silent ride that only Raab and April talked through.
In what would take them about two hours or more, the group reached Baltimore in half that time. Novak sped around corners avoiding overturned cars. The car clock read '2:17' when the car pulled up to the Hilton. Cautiously, they all stepped out of the car. Novak and Bam led the small group into the hotel while Raab trailed behind to make sure no people snuck up on them.
In the hotel, it looked as though no one had been there. Novak casually strolled to the front desk and reached over, picking up several key cards. Holding four of them like a deck of cards, he said, "Pick a card, any card."
Bam, April, Raab and Ville each picked one. "Huh. I guess I can bunk with you, Brandon," Ville suggested. Novak nodded almost eagerly and the two went off in search of their room.
"I'm rooming alone!" April called, already crossing over to the elevators, stepping into the one not occupied by Novak and Ville. Rabb jogged across to get on that same elevator. april looked at him oddly.
"Well, someone has to make sure you don't get hurt!" Raab explained as the doors closed. Bam looked over at Ryan.
"I guess it's you and me, man," Bam said.
--->END CHAPTER 4.
A/N: I guess that was kinda sudden. I dunno what's wrong... I thank epiks13 and so_pseudogoth for reviewing the first version, but I changed the little thing about going west into going south, just to let you know. Bleh. I'm not happy with my writing this chapter, 'cause I'm rushing everything so I might rewrite it... BLEH. Review, even if it's telling me I am rushing things. Help me out here, people.
