PrologueCHAPTER 1
"Bam!" called Tony Toretti, the teenager that lived next door. He was skateboarding, something that Brandon used to do before he decided to take up nursing. Rolling down the window, Bam smiled at the nickname Tony used for him. It stuck when Bam's best friend, Chris Raab, slurred Bam's first and last names together in day care. "Look! I learned how to do an ollie!"
Performing the trick, Bam smiled. "Good! Now keep practicing. Maybe one of these days you'll be signed to a company, like Element or something."
"Really? You think?" the thirteen-year-old asked. "WOW!" He began to skate away when Bam noticed Tony's arm.
"Hey buddy, what happened?" Bam pointed to the bandaged arm.
"Oh, some hobo came up and bit me! Mom already took me to the doctor's, and he gave me some medicine and stuff to keep it from getting infected and shit."
"You shouldn't cuss," Bam laughed as the thirteen-year-old just sped off giving him the one-fingered salute.
Shaking his head, Bam pulled into the driveway, turned off the car, leaned back into the seat, and massaged his neck. The stress was getting to him. Thankfully, he'd taken off the weekend to take his new girlfriend, Jenn Rivell, to the beach, but that was for tomorrow night. He was dozing off, and knew that he needed to get up and get into the shower, eat something, then get to bed, but the car was warm, the seat was comfortable, and Bam didn't want to move…
"Hey!" the tapping on the window and the high-pitched voice snapped him out of his mini-nap. Checking his watch, he noted that he'd been napping for fifteen minutes. Blinking, he looked out the window and smiled at the sight of his girlfriend. "Come on inside. I'll help you wash up."
Smiling, Bam pulled his duffel bag from the passenger seat and climbed out of the car with renewed energy.
---
Later that night, as Jenn snuggled into Bam's arms and she slept, Bam lay awake zoning as the news droned on in the background. Something didn't feel right. He slowly extracted Jenn from his arms and lay her gently back on the bed. Checking the clock, Bam sighed in relief and pulled on a pair of long black shorts and a black wifebeater before tugging on his comfortable black Vans. Quickly scribbling a note, he left it on the kitchen table and grabbed his keys and wallet, quickly walking out of the house and to his car. He was a bit hungry and all he had in his kitchen was leftover pizza and some eggs. He needed to go mini-shopping.
Driving down the street to the local shopping mart, Bam pulled into a space and entered, trying not to think of the cool breeze causing him goosebumps. Hurrying into the store, Bam went to the frozen foods aisle in search of the most important thing in the world: ice cream. More importantly, Heath Bar ice cream. Jenn just didn't understand his love for ice cream...
He looked up as another person walked down the same aisle. A man wearing a blue short-sleeved top that fit quite snugly and a pair of blue jeans was standing at the other end of the aisle. He had curly blondish hair and a red beard, and wore a pair of black flip-flops. Bam's head turned away just as the man looked up at him. Bam saw the man smile slightly from the corner of his eye. Reaching into the freezer, Bam smiled victoriously as he pulled out his carton of Heath Bar ice cream and glanced up again, looking for the guy he saw earlier, but he wasn't there. Shrugging it off, Bam returned to the checkout area and bought his ice cream. "Thank you and have a nice night, sir."
"You too, uh, Mary," said Bam, reading from her badge. He left the store and goosebumps raised on his skin again in the night air. It was July, but the nights were cold. Looking around the parking lot, Bam saw the man from earlier smoking a cigarette and fighting with his car. Bam unlocked the back door to his car, threw the plastic bag in, and walked over to the man. "Having some trouble?"
The man jerked around, sending some ash from the end of the burning cigarette flying with the breeze. "Yeah," the man said gruffly, glaring at his Acura. "It won't unlock. I swear, this car is out to get me." Bam looked at the key, and sure enough it had the Acura logo on it.
"Listen, why don't you and me go for coffee, I'll drop you off at your house, and you can call AAA in the morning?" Bam suggested.
"Yeah," the man replied. He threw down his cigarette and stomped it out with his flip-flops. "Sure. I'm Ryan, by the way. Ryan Dunn."
"Bam Margera." They shook hands, and Bam had the oddest sense of deja vu. "I'm sorry, have we met before?"
"I...I don't think so," Ryan replied with the same questioning tone in his voice. "But I'm getting the strangest feeling, like we've met before. Do you know a guy named Dico?"
"That name sounds vaguely familiar," Bam said, thinking. Realizing that their hands were still gripped together, Bam and Ryan pulled back at the same time. They began to walk to Bam's car and quickly got in. Starting the car up and turning on a metal station, they pulled out and Bam turned to Ryan as they stopped at a red light. "Wait! Were you at Novak's party last weekend?"
"Yeah!" Ryan said, his eyes lighting up in recognition. "I saw you there with Rivell."
"Yeah, we hooked up there," Bam said, turning his eyes onto the road when the light turned green. "Actually, she's back at my house… ‘Cause I got ice cream that's melting in the backseat. Great."
"Ya know, you could just let me off at my apartment and you can go back," Ryan said, "It's not like we need coffee. And I've got my own ice cream melting."
"Raincheck, then?" Bam asked with a smile. He found a little slip of paper and a pen in the glovebox and hastily scratched his number down. "Call me tomorrow after four. I get out of work then."
Ryan nodded. "I live on the corner of Main and Elmer." Bam made a noise of affirmation and started driving towards Ryan's apartment building. "By the way… what is it that you do?"
"I'm…" Bam smiled and chuckled. "I'm a nurse."
"Really? I would have never suspected you as a nurse. You look like," Ryan paused. "…Like an extreme sports player. Like BMX or skateboarding or inline skating."
"I used to skateboard," replied Bam as he turned onto Main Street. "But I gave it up to become a nurse. Nursing's pretty fun, or it would be if I was serving under a better doctor. What do you do?"
"Mechanic," Ryan answered gruffly. He pulled up the sleeves of his arms to reveal tattoos. "It's alright, I guess. Not bad, the pay is all right, the people are nice enough. I'm an okay mechanic, if I do say myself."
"I bet you are," Bam mumbled quietly. The music masked most of what he said, thankfully, as he surreptitiously stole a look at Ryan. Bam never considered himself gay, not exactly, just appreciative. He'd never been in a relationship with another guy, but he'd thought about it. If he wasn't with Jenn, Bam would be tempted to hit on Ryan. He was tempted even now. "So, here's your stop."
"Yeah," Ryan murmured, looking at Bam expectantly. When Bam did nothing, Ryan just sighed. "I'll call you tomorrow and talk about that raincheck."
Bam smiled fully, and caught Ryan's eyes. "I'm looking forward to it."
Ryan grinned and stepped out of the car, waving to Bam as he walked to his apartment building. Bam waited until Ryan got inside before driving off home. Pulling into the driveway, Bam sighed in agitation at the absence of Jenn's car in on the street. Walking in after grabbing his ice cream form the back seat, Bam deposited his keys in the little bowl on the stand by the door and strolled into the kitchen, kicking off his shoes under the table. He read the note she left.
Sorry Bam, but this just isn't working. I went home tonight and I'll be back in the morning to get some stuff I left there. I'm sorry, but I'm still young and I need to party when I'm still able to. You'll find someone good, though, I know it. You're a good man, Bam, just not the one for me.
-->END CHAPTER 1.
A/N: So yeah, I guess Bam's a bit out of character. I'm trying to keep him IN-character, though, I swear. Is he in character? Probably not, but that's how it is with AUs. Don't worry, the zombies make their appearance in Chapter 2! Review?
