Ergo = bad?

So I'm in another parenting forum with an emphasis on attachment style parenting/baby wearing. I mentioned I use an ergo and was instantly told I was doing things wrong/the ergo sucks/etc. I was under the impression that it was one of the best ssc? I guess my not using a wrap or rs was an issue. So I was just looking for opinions here, as that ( Read more... )

There was some drama over the Ergo a few years ago. From what I can remember, a company that was stripping and overdying Ergos in really neat colors (when all they had was black/cranberry/khaki/critters/blue colors) got her selling license taken away from her because she was modifying the carriers. And then a little bit later, Ergo basically forced Beco to change their design, which is why they switched from their 4g style (which was very similar to the Ergo) to the Beco Butterfly. It annoyed the babywearing community because the Ergo was a buckled Asian Baby Carrier (like a mei tai), so people got mad at Ergo for trying to put other SSC companies (including ones that were still being made by WAHMs) out of business. Obviously that didn't actually happen, though ( ... )

a good woven wrap IS superiour. It provides more support for the baby's back.. the wearer's too. With an older child who holds his neck and spine well it doesn't matter as much, but then again they need their support when they sleep.
I am also not a fan of their head support. In my experience with Beco, it is only helpful because it hides the child's wobbly head from the passerbies... but it is still wobbly on the inside.
Plus all the issues with it not being USA made, shorter body and all. But it is still a great carrier nevertheless if you can't or don't want to invest time into learning how to wrap. Once you do though.. ergo is just .. meeeeh ;)

Ergo's a good carrier for the right baby/mama/age. It's not really great for baby before they can support themselves fully for long periods of time and it's not really good once they reach a certain length as the body is too short. Those are really the only issues!

I used one when my baby was 6-9 months but it didn't us well as I'm so petite and baby is a giant.

Those people in the other forum don't sound like nice people :)

Yeah, they just sound nasty. I haven't used an ergo myself but I haven't heard anything bad about it either. If it's working for you and your baby, then it's fine. Haters gonna hate ;)

I'm just starting to research my babywearing options, so I don't have any useful advice, but I'm just curious - what were some of their arguments?
