Ergo = bad?

May 21, 2012 23:55

So I'm in another parenting forum with an emphasis on attachment style parenting/baby wearing. I mentioned I use an ergo and was instantly told I was doing things wrong/the ergo sucks/etc. I was under the impression that it was one of the best ssc? I guess my not using a wrap or rs was an issue. So I was just looking for opinions here, as that ( Read more... )

I'm terribly curious what group this is....

I've been a little 'down' on Ergos, but I don't think they're bad carriers. I think they have horribly company policy and the owner has been ruthless and dishonest at times, but....

I also don't think its the 'best' carrier due to the body being so short. As kids get older, it doesn't come up very high on their back and it tends not to be the most supportive for adults or for children. But its by no means bad. Many an experienced baby wearer chooses the Ergo, and is very happy with it. I just was not and sold mine and bought other things.

I wouldn't say it's one of the BEST, but there's certainly nothing wrong with it! If you like it, great!

I love my Ergo. I have pretty much one of every type of carrier, and my Ergo is the one that gets used the most. I've heard people being down on Ergo occasionally, and I always felt like it was kindof a hipster thing, "Ergos are soooo mainstream."

I agree they sound like they're just being snobs. The local crunchy mama group here is all about wraps....they're seriously INSANE, women playing $600+ for a single wrap. *dies* They too tend to brush off ALL SSC's as the third choice option behind a wrap or RS...but seriously I love my Beco so they can all suck it. :P

Girl, if your user info is correct, it IS the same group, lol. If you're in the fb community. I deleted my post where they were throwing shade at me bc I was embarassed.

Babywearers in your group: I call bullshit.

I work at a babywearing shop and teach babywearing. Ergo is a carrier that provides proper hip support. It's fine; it's not my first choice for SSC, but it works well, and it's fantastic if one is babywearing while pregnant.

There are ethical issues with the company, but as far as babywearing goes, the actual carrier is just fine. (the infant insert is crap, but the carrier is fine).

And, as far as I am concerned a baby being worn properly and safely, regardless of the carrier, is better than a baby not being worn.

Yeah that infant insert was a waste. It was way too hot to wear a baby in that.
My LO doesn't want to be worn anymore now that she can walk now anyway.

Word.
I used wraps and pocket slings when the kids were teeny, went to mai-tai carriers when they were bigger, then on to SSCs when I needed more padding and support. My husband loved the Ergo because he is both tall and hefty and you can get a waist extender for it, so it was the only way he could wear the girls on his back (until we got him a custom MT with extra-long straps, but he still loves the Ergo).
My Ergo was with me through both my girls, then got passed on to another mom at my oldest's school who just had her third and I see her every day with this happy little baby in the Ergo. It makes my shriveled heart grow three sizes every time I see it. <3.
Haters gonna hate. The Ergo is widely available and not as "elite" as some of the other carriers, I think, so there's going to be the babywearing equivalent of hipsters who are going to look down on it just because it's accessible and popular.

I loved my mei tai for infant to about 7 months, when my son became a huge chunker. We went to the Ergo because we could 1)get it last minute from REI on the way to our hiking trip and 2) had the extender thing for my husband and we both wore our kid all through hiking and it was fine. Not my first choice for like, a grocery trip, but after DS started walking at around 9 months, we stopped wearing altogether.
