Realised I was being a bit parochial about our wild winter weather when I picked up on the news of the latest huge snowstorm to hit the Eastern US.

Hope you are all OK over there - we are well aware on this side of the pond that whatever weather we're getting, you've had it to contend with already, and about 20 degrees colder at that!

Crikey, that was a blowy night! Hope all my UK-based friends are OK - and particularly (though yes, I do know she's technically not in the UK) curiouswombat out in the middle of the Irish Sea...

... there were people in these!  Everyone got out, but those poor folk have lost everything.

mrowe, I hope you and yours are all safe - I gather the Dutch coast was also at severe risk from the storm surge, though you probably have much better protection than we do...

As predicted, the Big Storm passed to the south of us, and we had no more than an unusually-blustery autumn night. All the big trees on the green in front of us seem fine - just shed a few more leaves ( Read more... )

Nothing on the scale of Hurricane Sandy, of course, but we have gale force winds, it's lashing down with rain and we're on flood alert (not our part of town, we're well away from and up from the river, but alerts all up and down the Thames from here...)

This is strangely, hypnotically beautiful. But also gives you some idea of the size of this storm.

Keeping fingers tightly crossed for all those of you in the path of Hurricane Irene today and tomorrow. Am relieved to note that she's now been downgraded to a Grade 1, but that's still a hurricane.

Earthquake and hurricane in the course of a week - am reminded that "May you live in interesting times" is a Chinese curse...
