... there were people in these!  Everyone got out, but those poor folk have lost everything.

mrowe, I hope you and yours are all safe - I gather the Dutch coast was also at severe risk from the storm surge, though you probably have much better protection than we do...

Yikes - at least they got the cats out.

The water's apparently the highest in years, but on the whole the defences are holding. Here inland it wasn't that bad. The main problem for many people, especially in the north where the storm was at its strongest, was that train lines had been closed down as a precaution, so people couldn't get home (on St. Nicholas Eve, which is a big holiday/family feast) unless they left very early.

We had huge disruption to train lines as well, unsurprisingly, especially up and down the East coast. Very glad to hear your flood defences are holding up!
