Olive stepped out of the elevator and into the lobby of the Five Seasons Hotel. She was ready to go apartment hunting with Kimberly, and looking forward to an actual place of her own. Not some weird transient life in a hotel room. Ned still hadn't given her a definite answer about an apartment in his building. And that didn't bother her one little bit. Nope, not at all.

She saw Kimberly sitting in one of the chairs and hurried over to her. She wore her long pea coat and a yellow scarf with a matching yellow knit cap on her head. Instead of her usual heels, she wore a pair of boots so she wouldn't risk getting melted snow on her feet. "Hi!" She waved and then clutched her hands in front of her. "Ready to go?"

"Still haven't heard from Ned about an apartment in his building." She made a face and shook her head. He drove her completely bonkers sometimes, it was a wonder she had such a thing for him. "Where should we look first? I don't know the first thing about this town."

Kimberly looked up at the sound of Olive's voice. The yellow ensemble was a bit jarring on the eyes, but Olive seemed to be rocking it out all the same. She smiled and stood. "Totally ready," she replied with a grin. As soon as she was up, Kimberly was tying the belt of her trench coat tightly around her waist in an effort to ensure that the winter wind wouldn't be able to slip in and chill her. "I love that coat," she added ( ... )

Olive mirrored Kimberly's grin, especially when she told her that she liked her coat. "Thanks!" She practically preened, smoothing her hands down the front of it. "I like yours too." She gestured to the trench coat.

"Thatcher apartments, here we come!" She giggled and headed for the front door after Kimberly. She pushed it open and stepped aside to let Kimberly through. "We can walk there, can't we?" Olive was used to walking everywhere but she did have a car, too.

"You sure seem to know a lot more people for not having been here for very long." There was admiration in Olive's tone as she made the observation. She liked having friends, but she hadn't done much other than stalk Ned since she'd arrived. She really needed to be more social.

"Oh thanks!" Kimberly beamed in response to Olive's compliment. She, too, really liked the trench coat. It was trendy without being useless; she still managed to stay very warm in it, which was a huge plus having been from New York, but especially now, in Canada.

As they made their way outside, Kimberly shook her head. "I mean, if you want to, we can, but it's almost all the way across town, so I was thinking we could hail a cab. I'll pay if you want," she offered. If it was warmer out, Kimberly wouldn't have thought twice about saying that they could walk there, but with the cold in full swing, it wasn't something she really wanted to do if she didn't have to. "You know where Ned's opening the Pie Hole, right? It's like, right across the street," she replied ( ... )

"Oh, no... see, I have no idea where anything is. The one time I went out for a walk I was... never mind. Let's just say I didn't get very far. If it's all the way across town, we can drive." She was about to offer the use of her car, but Kimberly offered to hail a cab, and really that seemed a bit easier ( ... )

Kimberly's eyebrows arched with interest as she found herself wondering just what Olive had been doing the one time she went out for a walk, considering she immediately thereafter dropped the subject. As curious and nosy a person as Kimberly was, she wasn't about to fish for information right then and there; she did, after all, have an ounce or two of tact. "Yeah, honestly, most of my knowledge of town comes from the map on the forum. I haven't been a whole lot of places and I'm not big on walks in winter, so I don't get out much, either, but I did see the Thatcher Apartments listed and they're right over that way," she replied in reference to Olive's mention of the Pie Hole. Maybe it would be the Pie Hole No. 2 to Olive, but it would probably always just be the Pie Hole to Kimberly.

The mention of the uniforms gave Kimberly pause as she climbed into the cab and slid in after Olive, giving the driver the destination. "We have uniforms?" she asked a little uneasily, the first thing coming to mind was the ridiculous uniform she' ( ... )

"I should really check that map out. If we're going to live here, I might as well know my way around." The taxi ride was fairly smooth and uneventful, and the girls chatted the whole way about this and that. Olive found it soothing to have a friend to talk to. And she was rapidly considering Kimberly a friend. She was probably much younger than herself, but she chose not to let that bother her. Just the way that Ned being younger than her didn't stop her from being madly in love with him. She wasn't sure how long she'd be able to keep up the pretense that they were just friends, because almost everyone she knew back home had guessed that she had a terrible crush on the Pie Maker ( ... )

A small smile of relief tugged at the corners of Kimberly's mouth upon hearing what the Pie Hole's uniforms looked like. "No retarded hats or goofy ass name tags?" she prompted hopefully. "Because I'm good in a skirt - although blue's more my color but beggars can't be choosers - I just cannot deal with looking completely friggen ridiculous; you should've seen the last uniform I had to wear. As if it wasn't bad enough just being seen in it, I was a freshman in high school so looking good was at the top of my priority list and there was just no way to look good in it," she laughed ( ... )

Olive giggled at the mental image of retarded hats and goofy ass name tags. She shook her head with a grin. "Nope, none of that. Just retro cuteness." She sighed happily, pleased to be out and in a normal conversation with someone she liked. "Unfortunately blue isn't really a pie color. I mean, it is, but usually it's super super dark and almost black which is just... not appealing in an eating environment. Bright colors make people want to eat." It didn't hurt that Olive sort of had a thing for bright colors. She felt bad that Kimberly had had to wear a crazy uniform at her job when she was a freshman. It had been a long time since Olive was in school, but it had been a private school and she hadn't had to work. Her first job was as a jockey when she was 18. "Man, that l-to-the-a-to-the-m-to-the-e ( ... )

"Thank God," Kimberly replied sincerely, smirking just slightly. The idea of repeating the awful uniform experience wasn't one that Kimberly much cared for. "I can do retro," she added confidently. Well, she was willing to; whether or not she'd look ridiculous remained to be seen, she supposed. It took Kimberly a split second longer than she'd have liked to realize what Olive had been saying and once she did, she laughed. "Uh, yeah, to say the least," she replied. "Seriously, so long as I don't ever have to wear a hat shaped like a pie, Ned wins for better boss," she finished with a laugh and a playful roll of her eyes in reference to her memory of the cone-shaped hat ( ... )

Olive wasn't about to tell Kimberly that the cook-off uniform consisted of a pie shaped hat, at least Olive's uniform had. Ned's hat had been retro... retro 1800s. But, maybe there wouldn't be cook-offs to attend in Canada and she wouldn't have to worry about that ( ... )

Shaking her head, Kimberly smiled and shrugged. "You don't owe me anything," she insisted. "Just pay it forward like I did," she added with a significant smile. She was thanking Lulu by doing the same for Olive that Lulu had done for her, and some. That in and of itself was good enough for her; making a new friend out of the deal was a bonus, so it wasn't like she was doing Olive any favors. It just sort of worked out that way, the way that Kimberly saw it ( ... )

Olive waved away Kimberly's pay it forward attitude. Olive didn't believe in all that, but she was happy to do what she could for her new friend and potential roommate. As far as George was concerned, Olive had seen and replied to Kim's posting first, so even if it weren't possible for them to find a three bedroom, and even if they didn't want it, she didn't feel too bad for turning her down ( ... )

After looking at a few of the apartments open, Kimberly wasn't sure she was completely in love with any of them. They were nice, but they were also nothing super special. By the end of the tours, she found herself hoping fervently that something else caught her eye and soon. She couldn't stay at the hotel forever, after all. As they headed back out of the leasing office and out toward the street to hail another cab, Kimberly looked over at Olive, wondering what the other woman thought ( ... )
