Finally...

...something good happens.

I've been so worried about money lately. I still can't seem to find a job, and we keep having to borrow money from Brian's parents so that we can do crazy things like buy groceries or replace the battery in Brian's car. Also, my own car is still fucked up, so it's hard to look for a job, anyway ( Read more... )

Good! I hate worrying about money. I've always been very frugal about it before I had to pay rent & bills, but now it's just a constant, never-ending thought/worry/annoyance. So, I FEEL YA. But, so glad things are looking up! People always seem like they have to go through tons of bad crap to finally get some good in.

As for applying, I'd suggest doing some sort of internship. But, of course, what do you want to do with a BA in History? My mom worked at an art museum with her BA in history while working on her Master's. I'm sure you don't want to hear it, but checking into getting an MA isn't a bad idea. And maybe you can even live off loans if you're going to school, too. If you want to go, that is. I know I'm taking a break from school for at least a year, but if I don't find a good job soon, I'll be looking into getting my master's for sure.

I'm planning on getting an MA, actually. One issue was that I didn't have the money to take the GRE in time. I only found out about nice things live fee wavers when it was too late. I'm sure I'll at least be partially living off loans when the time comes, but that's still not until December, at the earliest.

I'm actually going to look into some sort of internship/volunteering soon. My husband just found out that he got a raise (YAY!!), so me finding a paying job isn't quite as heavy on me now. I'm willing to say, volunteer at the local library, because it will look good on any resume I fill out and it's a little closer to using my degree than say...waitressing. I actually have experience working on exhibits because I worked on one for the school two years ago.

As for what I want to do, I either want to work in a museum or teach at the college level. All require me getting more schooling, though. That much I know. Right now it's a matter of getting experience in either, which might be where the volunteering comes in.

Okay, good deal! I know my mom is always politely HINTING I should take the GRE and get an M.A., so I get annoyed when people push me to it. XD But, it's definitely an option in my mind ( ... )

Thank you! I'm still hoping to get a job, but now I can hold out a little to at least get something that I like instead of the first thing thrown at me.

Crap, for a married couple, you guys NEED to file your FAFSA as soon as the 2010 year goes live. That can be a 10k Pell grant for living and stuff (being at or below the poverty line), not including that some of the stimulus was supposed to be for students on state scholarships.

I know I got 5k in grants from the state of Texas, and I filled out my FAFSA near when it was due. If I went earlier I would have gotten the Pell grant as well, filing independently.

15k ain't chicken feed.

Hell, that would come close to doubling my yearly pay.

Actually, Brian and I both filed out FAFSAs this year. He's going to school in the fall, but I can't go until this winter. We both filed as married, so that should at least get something from his when it comes through. (His shit was delayed for random reasons.)
