Lost Boy All the instructors knew that the attention of the trainees was waning as the Officer's Ball drew closer. It was decided that classes would be dismissed early on Friday, giving the young men a chance to get the excitement out of their systems before the actual event, as well as get haircuts and make sure their shoes were shined.
Twenty minutes before the expected dismissal, the arrival of a wagon drew the attention of the students nearest the window. "Is that-" Before the Chief realized that one student was up, three more had risen from the seats and crowded around the window.
"That's Ethan Weber," he heard, and his head shot up. Of course Ethan would be early.
"All right, settle down," the Chief ordered, having to raise his voice over the excited young men. 'Better they get it out now, than at the party,' the Chief realized and glanced toward Adora, who was also looking over her shoulder.
It took a moment, but the door to the main building finally opened and Ethan stopped just outside the door. Eyes taking in the sight of the class, the former Tin Man nodded to the Chief and gave him an apologetic smile. It was obvious to the Chief that Ethan hadn't expected to arrive during class, either.
"Come on in here, Ethan," he waved and nodded toward the class. "Settle down," he directed again to the trainees. Ethan nodded and stepped into the lecture hall, setting down the package he was carrying on the table just inside the door.
"Young men, it's a pleasure," he said to the group, adding a second nod in Adora's direction. She looked down to the desktop and smiled slightly.
"All right, all right," the Chief said as the men began to get distracted again. "Ethan," the Chief laughed, knowing there was no hope, "will you just answer their questions?" Ethan laughed and pulled a chair out and set it in front of the group.
"Ask away," Ethan said with a wave and caught Adora's eye again, giving her a wink as he sat down.
Once the questions had been exhausted and Ethan had resorted to verifying or denying fact and fiction, the Captain appeared and ordered the trainees to clear out for the weekend. He also ordered them to not harass Ethan before the party.
Or after the party.
As everyone was being herded out, Ethan stepped toward Adora. "No questions, Lieutenant?" Adora's eyes fell on the door for a second before she shook her head.
"Any questions I had were covered... Sir," she said with a nod. He gave her a smile and nodded before moving back to the door and the Captain. Adora took her time collecting her books as the rest of the students finally departed and she eyed the door.
"Miss Springer," Ethan said, causing her to look up again, and he stepped toward her with the package he'd set on the table.
"All clear," the Chief nodded from the doorway and the Captain moved into the hallway to join him. Ethan nodded to both men and turned back to Adora.
"Your father asked me to deliver this," he continued, holding up the package. Adora looked at the awkwardly-shaped box, wrapped with twine, and reached out to take it from him. Shaking her head, Adora gave him a slightly-confused look, as she wasn't expecting a package from home. "You just gonna stand there and stare at it or are you gonna give an old man a hug?"
Adora looked up from the box and smiled. "Of course not." She threw her arms around him and pressed a kiss to his cheek. She hadn't seen him in ages. "What are you doing here?" she asked as she pulled back to look at him.
"I'm here for a party," he grinned and, as Adora pulled back some more, Ethan caught her hands and held them out to her side. "Look at you, Kiddo," he said with a smile. "You all right?"
Adora nodded. "How are you?" Ethan made a face and waved toward the box again. "What is this?" Ethan shook his head.
"No idea," he lied. "Why don't you open it and find out?" he said with a grin. Adora narrowed her eyes and reached for the twine knot. It took a moment to get the knot undone, which was helped by Ethan pulling out his knife, and she pulled the top off the box.
"Oh, boy," Adora breathed. She looked up to him, wide-eyed and carefully reached into the box to run her fingers over the fabric. Ethan watched as she stared at the contents of the box and he smiled.
"This belonged to your mother," he said, leaning forward and pressing a kiss to the side of her head.
"I can't," Adora said, shaking her head. Ethan grabbed her by the shoulders and turned her toward him.
"Dorie," he started, giving her a smile.
"You don't even know if it'll fit," she protested. She was planning to go out the next day and buy the first - and least expensive - dress she found, and the ladies in the office had already informed her that they would be helping her get ready the afternoon of the party.
"Dorie," Ethan said again, "it's been in this box for far too long. Lizzie would want you to wear it." Adora knew there was no point in arguing with him; she didn't want to wear a dress at all but, perhaps, she would at least be able to pull a little courage, with the help of her mother. Ethan knew she would wear the dress, and he couldn't wait to see her in it, but that was for another day.
"You'll have dinner with me, tonight?" he asked, giving her a nudge.
Adora tilted her head and frowned. "I can't. If someone sees-"
Ethan gave her a look and shook his head. "All they'll see is a lovely, young lady having dinner with a musty old Tin Man."
"You're not musty," Adora said, smacking his arm.
"But I'm old?" Ethan laughed as Adora made a face. "Please, Adora." Adora opened her mouth to protest, but realized she'd never be able to argue with Ethan Weber.
"All right, Grandpa," she nodded.
