giant hogweed: DO NOT TOUCH!

I just heard a story on the news that giant hogweed has been found growing in Alexandria, the next town south. It can grow to 5.5m (18 ft), and the sap can cause blisters and scars. There are also unsubstantiated reports of the sap causing blindness.Hogweed is regulated as a federal noxious weed by the US government ( Read more... ) -

Everything is out of the car. Very little is put away. Some things that need drying or airing are out on the deck. The grass does need mowing, so that will delay drying out the tent, groundcloth, and tarp.

exuberance
We have a huge, sprawling pumpkin vine in our back yard. It sprouted in the compost pile (only about a month ago?) and dropped over the retaining wall. This morning I counted 16 open blossoms on it. I saw a (carpenter?) bee wallowing around in one flower, or maybe she slept there. (It got down to 55°F/13°C here last night.) Many flowers are under ( Read more... ) -
premature spring
I was doing some yardwork today and spotted an outbreak of crocuses. That prompted us to look around the yard, and we found a crocus blooming in the front yard, where there's more sun. There's also onions sprouting, and tulips (we're guessing). We've had some mild weather this winter, and some of the plants are getting fooled. It's turning very ( Read more... ) -
every 5 years
Our driver's licenses are valid for 5 years, expiring at the end of your birthday month when your age turns a(n integer) multiple of 5. So I went to the DMV to renew my license today.
